Incorrect. That's the nature of stupid people. If you're dating a normal girl there is no stupidity and games like this. On to the next one kid.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

The owner called me when I was walking in between classes this morning and we talked for about 15 mins.

He was very receptive and wanted my honest opinion on what the problems were, I tried to explain the best I could without disparaging my boss too hard.

He told me he had talked to my boss already and they were going to work on solutions to the problems and told me he valued my input and wanted to hear more in the future if things needed addressing, so I guess that went as well as it could have. He also said he really wanted to keep me there if he could.

I'm fully aware my boss might know and I may be a target from now on, but right now the crew is in pretty complete solidarity and we have the big boss's ear now so I should be fine.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

Huge red flag that he said he talked with your boss and that they are going to "work on solutions". Your boss cannot stay. If he stays, he will resent you and everyone else who spoke out, and he will eventually turn that resentment into action. He has to go.

You already figured out how to deal with your girl when she bailed on you with the steaks. Just keep doing that and she'll fall into line. Don't put up with her **** and she won't keep giving you ****. She'll also respect you more for not putting up with her ****.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

yea, it's for sure a bad outcome but one I can't really do anything about. I got to the owner a day too late but I doubt it would've changed much.

There's already signs he's taking it out on people who spoke out. Oh well. i don't think that route will pan out very well for him, and he is actually a moron so I am 100% confident he'll **** this up somehow.

regardless, my software job search has begun in earnest now so I only need to last 6-9 months there anyway which shouldn't be hard.

S sent me a kind of strange message today apologizing if she said or did anything to make me feel bad about myself lately, and that she really appreciates me buying the small stuff when we go out. She also said she doesnt care if I keep smoking or not or if I lose weight.

she told me a month ago she gets really mood swingy during 2 weeks before her period so maybe that's what was going on this week. idk. it was a sweet gesture though.

We went to my school gym last night and it was fun. I can bring her there as a guest for $5/day and we can play racquetball and stuff which I really love so she wants to keep going with me. I'm going to start hitting weights. I did 30 mins of pretty intensive cardio last night without dropping dead so I might be in better shape than I thought I was.

So, I accidentally enrolled in a graduate level class. My quarter is going to be really really hard I think. So far I think I’m staying on top of it but ****.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

I’ve implemented “extreme tryhard protocol” for this quarter:

- no missing lectures
- no alcohol on school nights
- notes every lecture
- read material before every lecture
- sit in the very front so i dont get distracted by my phone

It seems to be working so far

Oh man, smart phones didn't exist when I was in school. Can't imagine I'd be able to sit through a lecture without reading 2p2 the whole time.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

yea I have a problem with my phone, even outside of class I am constantly on it.

2p2/hearthstone was a big distraction in class, which led to me not paying attention, which led to me asking myself the question "Why go to class?" which led to me not going at all.

My main chunk of classes is from 8am - 11am which is my most alert, focused time generally, so that's good. Later in the day classes are the worst for me. I absolutely cannot pay attention.

If I sit in front and am on my phone, I feel like it is rude to the professor, so I am on it less.

just got slapped with a $600 hospital collections bill from last summer i forgot to pay.

damn. I gotta build my embedded systems project today but cant summon the willpower.

on days like this I never know how to motivate myself and end up drinking inevitably.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

finished 2 assignments early, have a third due next wednesday where i need to connect my power supply to my breadboard and power an LED and push button and program them to interact with each other.

i'm using a 9v battery and a 32k processor. I need to go to the lab today and make sure I don't need to solder anything (dont think I do) and understand how i need to plug in all my parts, but this project is still very intimidating to me because I could barely figure out how to install my new graphics card on my own. I am not good at this stuff and barely know how electricity works because I've never taken physics.

on top of that all my parts have *DO NOT OPEN THIS UNLESS IN A STATIC FREE ENVIRONMENT* which has me all sorts of sketched out to attempt this at home.

This. I actually liked my academic life, but very much did not like professors who did not take the time and effort required to make their classes interesting. For those classes, I often tuned out and a smartphone would have been impossible for me to ignore.

I did take a class in law school that I never once attended. It was a prerequisite for something I really wanted to take.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

I only did that for the first time last quarter. I got a B- and if I had attended I may have gotten a B+.

I feel really bad for boring class guy this quarter though. He’s younger than me and seems unorganized like he’s never taught. He has his TA giving out answers to the hw in his discussion class.

He’s so boring that I heard everyone complaining about it in discussion. That’s not super common. It’s a class of 200 and maybe ~40 people have been coming.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

The worst ever for me was a graduate student TA that taught a small section in conjunction with a large lecture. He had a heavy middle eastern accent which caused him to emphasize the wrong syllables in longer words, which made life really difficult when he was dealing with anything complex. Worse, though, is that he was really sloppy and would drop terms or blow simple algebra when resolving some complex thing. I approached him after class one day to work out where one of those had gone wrong, and he said to me “do not look at what I say and do not listen to what I write, but rather pay attention to what I mean.” He had NO idea what he had just said.

I just looked him up. He’s teaching discrete mathematics at the university of Tel Aviv. There are videos of his lectures, but alas, they’re password-protected.

I sort of felt bad for that guy, but he literally made the material harder to understand because of his language skills and error rate. I always thought he was well-intentioned, though.

Why do you want to really be there? I can count on my fingers number of times I really attended lectures. I was always more efficient at working through material on my own in the library. And I did exactly that. I did all problems to all lectures, but lectures itself it was such waste of time for me.

Do invest your time in activities that give you the most fun/something useful.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

It forces me to keep up with the material.

I just do better when I’m attending school. Last quarter kind of proved that I can’t skip completely.

Here’s the Project I’m working on, I got the 9 V battery hooked up to the board and have it out putting 5 V:

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

the first part of the project is hooking up the power supply to the chip, making a circuit with a push button and LED light, and programming the chip to make the LED flash at 500ms intervals when the button is held down.

seems simple enough and plugging everything in hasn't been that hard. i don't know what I'm doing at all and am just following the schematic. Some guys across from me though managed to fry their regulator, it literally melted the metal and the guy burned his hand pretty badly. So, measuring myself against them, I think I'm doing pretty well.

i got the battery outputting 5v so now I know I wont fry my chip if I plug it in, next step is the programming which is really only like 10 lines of code so I should finish this pretty quickly.

last step is configuring a 8mhz crystal so we can overclock the chip from 1mhz. If the rest of the project continues to be this easy this will be a very enjoyable class for me.

Also, computational geometry is ****ing HARD

here was a problem I just had to do:

Let p=(px,py),q=(qx,qy), and r=(rx,ry).Show that the sign of the determinant

D =
1 px py
1 qx qy
1 rx ry

determines whether a point r lies to the left or right of the directed line pq.

of course I had no idea how to do this but my solution was 4 pages.

Re: Jmakinmeangry's debauchery and general idiocy blog

i can't really take credit for the above solution. it was the combination of about 8 hours of furious scribbling on my whiteboard combined with numerous smoke-walks, some vague ideas i had about how a determinant works, and some furious googling which led me to a solution that I heavily modified and worked out on my own.

don't think that counts as plagiarism.

Can you plagiarize the solution to a math problem?

I think the main issue is did you understand it?

You need only to calculate cross product of vectors pq and pr and see if the result is in positive or negative z-direction. The determinant you got is basically the z-component of this cross-product in three-dimensional space.

Math is always elegant.
