Which means that I aim to spend up to 20k. If I can spend less, then good for me.

I will handle it as I see fit depending on my day to day plans after I've left.

Some countries don't require any visas so I'm good with them. I also already have my Indian visa.

For some others, it's just a quick internet request process (ie Burma or Oz). For some others it will be more complicated (ie Vietnam, Thailand).

I've studied the topic a bit so that it won't be something new to get informations about when I leave.

Some countries are gonna want a more detailed plan. Will you coordinate with your embassy, or are there services for "wanderers"?

Yup and that's something I've still not looked into that much. I have to do my homeworks about it. Not a really big deal, I can take a flight for the nearest country and it will be ok. For instance if I go to Sri Lanka I have to show an exit ticket. If I buy a plane ticket for Madras it will only be $90 so that even if I don't go there and stay more and leave afterward in another place $90 wouldn't have been that much of a loss.

There is no vaccine against dengue.

I got all my vaccines except :

- yellow fever which is almost only in black africa and I dont especially intend to go there. It's also in south america but I dont care, in january last year I've spent 1 month in the amazon jungle without this vaccine and I'm still alive

- rabies : I can't get this vaccine because you have to have 3 injections in a month time frame and it would require me to stay longer here before leaving and I dont want to. Plus, now I'm living in the country side and I would have to go 3 times in Paris by train to get each injection which is a pain in the ass.
I'm gambling with this one because you should be vaccined if you go to SE Asia and I will go there. I'm just hoping that some silly sick dogs or monkeys won't lick or bite me.

I did Vietnam online. Thai didn't need anything special (though I'm Australian, so that may be why)

Yellow fever is actually pretty important and you can consider yourself lucky so far. And that's got nothing to do with actually getting Yellow Fever. A lot of countries won't let you in if you have been to a country that has it and you don't have the vaccination on your record.

I remember going to Brazil and they basically said you can come in without it, but you probably won't be able to leave because no one would take you!

Agree with the rabies one. Even if you get bitten they make you take a needle anyway even if you have the rabies vaccination.

So you advise me to get the yellow fever vaccine before I leave ?

What don't you understand in both those simple sentences ?
What you don't seem to understand is that 500k is not a lot of money when you have no more coming in and that's all you have to live on for the rest of your life.

Even assuming you can travel the world for only 20k/year, what are you planning to do in 25 years when you're 65 and have run out of money?

if i wanted to go on a world vacation i'd budget some money and go for some time, maybe 6 months or a year. i wouldn't start out by selling my home and all my possessions without even a first destination picked. it sounds to me like you're having some kind of emotional breakdown, talking about how europe is dying and you're in such a rush to get out of the country-- i'm not understanding the urgency there either. all this worries me. you're worrying me, kid.

what does your family have to say about all this?
It's not an emotional breakdown; it's a fairly typical midlife crisis. The only difference is that while most men have these types of thoughts when they turn 40, they're not stupid enough to actually quit their jobs, sell their apartment, and follow-through on their dream life because they realize that it would turn into a nightmare down the road.

East coast is definitely the more interesting place even if I come from Perth.

Cairns and Brisbane get quite hot in the summer, so I'd avoid that time of year.

Cairns and Brisbane are great during the winter, but Melbourne and Sydney get quite cold.

September/October isn't a bad time if you are trying to do them all.

There are at least two people ITT who have done more or less precisely that and don't seem to regret the decision even a teeny bit. In fact, every single person I've ever met or heard about who's walked away from their life for extended travel has said it's one of the best things they ever did. Head over to the nearest nursing home and ask how many people there wish they had spent more of their life working instead of pursuing their dreams.

Stop it Zikzak.

You should never follow your dreams. If you have a dream you should say no I'd rather live a life of boredom instead and become one of those old guys that says "Where did my life go?"

yeah, and some people live with that in the US working out their ass and are still unhappy so I'd rather live in a "third world slum" on a 15k budget traveling and fulfilling my dream

Btw, in some places in the US (new orleans or others towns), it is already a third world slum when you see how many beggars and homeless people are living on the street. So maybe you should look at your own country and sweep in front of your own door before insulting others countries.

_________

at last, about the "what will you do in 25 years when you have no more money ?" I can answer that maybe I'll die tomorrow, in 1 month or in 1 year. Who can tell where he will be in 25 years ? Life is so unpredictable, maybe I will not even live 25 years. Reason why I want to enjoy it fully NOW so that the day I pass away I will have no regret.

Well, I'm still several decades away from being in a nursing home. I'm in my 50s, have been retired for 6 years, and I travel the world, play poker, and do pretty much whatever I want whenever I want. I can do this because I didn't give in to a midlife crises in my early 40s, continued to work for 10 more years, and now have a $100,000 annual pension that helps to finance my travel and other recreational activities. And that doesn't even address my seven-figure 401(k) and other investments.

It would be one thing if the OP was in his early 20's and wanted to travel the world for a year or two. It's quite another for a 40 year old man going through a typical midlife crisis to quit his job and decide to do it without any thought whatsoever for what will happen when he's 65 and completely out of money.
