Yeah, seems likely something pretty bad happened to him. Especially considering he updated frequently that time he was really sick when he first arrived in India. Means it probably isn't just a case of being sick again.

Dude really could be dead.

GOOD MORNING KUALA LUMPUR !

My 1st stop in Malaysia was in Kuala Lumpur.

After a few hours flying to get there I arrived to the big airport. I had to find my way to get a bus to go to the center of the city and take a shuttle (like a skytrain) to get to where my contact was waiting for me.

For this stay I had decided to rent a room in an appartement, close to Chinatown.

I arrived there and my contact arrived. A young 30ish years old malaysian dude. Very cool. Like a rasta Malaysian with long and curly hair.

We went to the appartement and to my surprise I was the only one renting for those 2 days. He gave me the key so that I had the entire appartement just for me.

After 2 months traveling in India in cheap bungalows and guesthouses, having one appartement just for me was heaven.

Plus, it has a balcony overlooking the top of the Petronas Towers and the Kuala Lumpur Tower. At night it was awsome, each night the KL Tower had a different colour :

I was delighted so I decided to stay 1 day more, 3 in total.
After he left I decided to walk around a bit just to get a feel of Kuala Lumpur.

The first contact was quite disappointing.

I'm not gonna make the suspense last any longer and will go straight to the point : Kuala Lumpur is totally skippable.

There is nothing charming in this city.

Firstly you never see the sun. The sky is always grey. Why ? Because KL is highly polluted. How cute is that ? Therefore everything looks always sad.

Place of independance

As you see the light is not pretty because of the sky always grey.

I kept walking and looked like Russia to me :

As you can see the city has no charm.

Just a business city with big highways and buildings and many are under construction (I didn't bother taking pics of those).

This city is not suited if you have no car and I found myself stuck many times with my gps which told me to go to some directions that I just could access by car. Wandering in the city was a huge pain in the ass.

I still stayed 3 days because as I said after traveling in modest conditions having a nice modern well furnished appartement was paradise.

Chinatown is nice. This is a set of lanes full of shops. You can buy there all Vuiton, D&G and others worldwide (fake) items. Since a douchebag stole my sunglasses in India I had to buy some new. So I got those beautiful D&G sunglasses that I paid 5€. Didn't dare to ask to the shopkeeper whether they were genuine or not

Some pics of Chinatown :

Unfortunately I lost the pics shot at night and this is when Chinatown is the most interesting.

One street around Chinatown. Can't say that this is especially beautiful :

Food was great in Kuala Lumpur and in Malaysia in general. At least at the start. All new and succulent flavours I wasn't accustomed to. At some point it became painful though, because this is a fatty food, all is fried and/or with sauces/gravies. If you're into greasy food you will love it, but if like me you have a healthy diet chances are that at some point your body will not stand that much all this fat. Even veggies are fried..

Food is a blend of chinese, indian and malaysian. Funny enough that what they call indian food is not indian at all. At least it has some aspects of it but is blended with local custom variations. It's still indian food for them but to me this is malaysian.

Chinese food was good too but I got quickly fed up of noodle soups and others weird stuffs. One night I ate a great soup with noodles, tofu, chicken in a place smelling like ****. Litterally. It was as if someone had pooped there. Quite an akward and intense experience to say the least that eating some good food in a place smelling that bad.

As I said, Kuala Lumpur has no charm. Besides Chinatown which is nice (at least for a couple of days max, after that you get bored) the city has nothing appealing. Only part maybe not that ugly was Kuala Lumpur downtown, also called Bukit Bintang and which is where all the big malls, but to be honest I'm not traveling the world for malls, so I didn't really care about them.

Besides Kuala Lumpur being an ugly city, the BIG disappointment for me was to notice how there is no malaysian strong identity. Coming from India where the culture and identity are so strong, it was a shock.

Malaysia as you might know is a blend of chinese, indians, and malaysian. Issue is that the chinese are predominant. You see chinese people, shops and temples everywhere. I really thought that I was in China and I didn't like that. If I want to go to China, I'll go to Shangai not Malaysia.

Besides, chinese are not the friendliest people in the world. They are noisy and rude. I think that they don't like westerners.

As a result and contrary to India where the people were so sweet, people in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia generally speaking (I use the term "people" on purpose, gathering all malaysian, indian, and chinese) are not nice. Well, they are not evil, but they don't care about you. They are both cold and distant and when you ask for some help, even if they do help you, you have the feeling that you're bothering them.

Maybe it also has to do because this is a muslim country. I found indeed the country to be very strict and serious. Not a lot of fun there. Don't know if it has anything to do with the religion. Just a guess.
Malaysia is more expensive than India.

At least the food is equal. I paid 2,5 to 4€ a meal. But accomodation is more expensive. And if you go shopping in malls you'll find same price than at home. I can't say that Kuala Lumpur was expensive, but it wasn't cheap neither.

By the way, on a very side note I'd like to advertise for the new business of a traveler I met in Kuala Lumpur. We spent the evening and went diner together. They guy is genuine and totally truthworthy, reason why I'm happy to promote his new website DIVEBITE :

"Divebite offers a platform for exchanging helpful information directly related to working in the diving industry. Review dive centers that you’ve worked for and rate the atmosphere, working conditions, salary, teaching conditions/standards, professionalism, health & safety standards, boat and equipment. Plus, leave some practical tips about the local area of the dive center by outlining accommodation possibilities, transport options, food&drinks, free time/leisure, length of the season, visa requirement/work legalities. It’s then, up to you to choose the best location and employer in the dive business before you sign up for your next job.".

I wish him the best for his new venture. If you're interesting in the diving business you can go to his website.

Back to your story. One day and while I was still in Kuala Lumpur I went to visit the Battu Caves. 1 hour away from the city, the Battu Caves is an Hindu place with temples, the Big Buddha and 300 steps to climb to access to some caverns full of temples and relics :

It was great but this is hindu, I wanted to meet MALAYSIAN culture, where the damn was it ????

Exiting from the Battu caves I found myself surrounded by monkeys. It was awsome and so funny except this bastard which tried to steal my camera while I was taking a shot :

The others ones were nice and funny :

dat face (lol) :

As a conclusion, Kuala Lumpur was a so so start in Malaysia. Unfriendly people, more expensive country, Kuala Lumpur not being beautiful, predominance of chinese and lack of true malaysian identity, really left a bitter taste in my mouth. Public transportation was really good though, I have to give a point to Malaysia about it. It is very easy to move through the city and the country with the Buses and trains services.

I felt lonelt in this city. Besides my encounter with that guy who owns the diving website it was no fun at all to stay there. After 2 months in India with awsome and friendly people, strong culture, and positive vibes, being in KL was a pain.

So after 3 days spent in Kuala Lumpur I decided to go away and visit some other place. Hopefully things would be better and I would more people ?

Malaysia is mostly Muslim, Hindu and Chinese. You want to see the real Maly culture youll have to go see tribe living in the jungle. Careful this might be much more dangeous than monkey since they shoot poisonus dart at outsiders.

Agree KL didn't wow me much either. A few nice things, but it seems to be a cross between a big city and a town, which doesn't work well for it.

PNG tribes are scary. Know a lot of people that have gone there to work. They don't give you a personal guard carrying a machine gun just for the **** and giggles.

I recommend using meetup.com when traveling if you want to meet locals and expats. I use it when traveling in lieu of staying in youth hostels as I find most other tourists insufferable.
