Varanasi is a bold start in some ways, but it's comparatively safe. Unless you go swimming in the Ganges. You'd be better off with monkey rabies than doing that.

You only need an hour or so for the Taj. Agra Fort is worth an entire afternoon. A side trip to Fatehpur Sikri is worth it. Jaipur has some of the world's worst touts.

Wow such good infos, thanks !
Tell me, you know quite good India ! How long have you been there ? Do you prefer the Northern or Southern part ? (if you know them both)

Yes, starting with Varanassi is a bit harsh but well, after that I think that I'll be ready for everything ! On a sidenote I'm happy I've decided to get vaccined against rabbies, monkeys are no joked over there !

UPDATE ! I have booked my 1st flight ticket and have decided to record it live to enhance the interaction with the readers :

I was there for a couple months. Started in Mumbai and went counterclockwise around the country, ending in Delhi. I liked all the different parts in different ways for different reasons. Least favorite city was Bhubaneswar, but that's the closest rail station to the Konark Sun Temple which has sexually explicit pervy sculptures that I needed to see.

Biggest regret was not having time to go to Punjab. Biggest brag was eating veal cordon bleu in Pondicherry and pissing off 99% of the country with a single dish. Your country's colonialism made that meal possible. Thanks!

haha you're welcome !

btw, is Delhi worth a visit ? For the moment I've skipped it from my schedule, telling myself that it was just a big city without any specific interest. Am I right ?

Depends on what you're looking for. Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, and Qutb Minar are all UNESCO World Heritage sites. There's plenty to see and do there, but I think you're right to not put too much priority on it. It's not like there's a shortage of crumbling forts and tombs and temples all over the country to look at if that's your thing.

However, if you're going to wax poetic about "the real India", I would say that absolutely needs to include places like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai. India has a contemporary face along with its historic culture and shocking poverty, and the interplay between those things is most striking in the big cities where they all happen in very close proximity.

Thanks for the insights, I understand what you're telling me. Going to Delhi won't hurt anyway once I'm in Agra, so I'll see when I am there.

I'm really starting to **** in my pants. I've read many horror stories about Varanassi, besides its beauty. Good point is that after this start over there everything should seem quite easy.

I've just booked my 1st 2 nights at Varanassi. I'm quite surprised by the high prices of accomodations. Thought that India would be around 8 to 10usd a room. This is far from the truth, unless you want to sleep in cow ****.

Dunno how long I'm gonna stay in Varanassi. Could be just 2 days, could be a whole month. Who knows. If I feel good there I will remain, otherwise I'll leave. Finally not sure about Sarnath and Allahabad. Tbh, I'm not sure about anything lol

you gotta have a plan.

Unlike you I'm not a macaque expert. I'm so envious right now. Please do give me your cell so that I can call you in case of emergency.

lmao i would love it if you called me from india when you're in jams. like fighting off venomous pythons escaped from a poorly regulated snake charmer convention and you risk your life grasping your phone to call me, and all you get from me is something useless like, "man.. i just wouldn't have gone there in the first place tbh"

Even assuming you can travel the world for only 20k/year, what are you planning to do in 25 years when you're 65 and have run out of money?

It's not an emotional breakdown; it's a fairly typical midlife crisis. The only difference is that while most men have these types of thoughts when they turn 40, they're not stupid enough to actually quit their jobs, sell their apartment, and follow-through on their dream life because they realize that it would turn into a nightmare down the road.
Dude what is your problem. Stop trying to put the op down.

I can do this because I didn't give in to a midlife crises in my early 40s, continued to work for 10 more years, and now have a $100,000 annual pension that helps to finance my travel and other recreational activities. And that doesn't even address my seven-figure 401(k) and other investments.

It would be one thing if the OP was in his early 20's and wanted to travel the world for a year or two. It's quite another for a 40 year old man going through a typical midlife crisis to quit his job and decide to do it without any thought whatsoever for what will happen when he's 65 and completely out of money.
No one cares about how perfect your life is. This is not your thread.

lol, yeah you're right, thanks for the comment. Right now might be both the best and worst moment. Best because nothing has started yet so it's still exciting, and worst because time being long I start to boil and therefore to think too much (which is no good).

Btw, I've already been a victim of the tourist scam. I've just booked my 1st 2 nights in Varanasi. The 1st hotel emailed me to pick me up at the airport for 1000Rs, and the second one sent me a similar mail proposing 850Rs. While it doesn't sound like much, it is overpriced. I've read here and there about standard price to get from the airport to Varanasi and it's around 500/550Rs..

Welcome to India ! I guess that it will be likewise everytime money is involved. Maybe I should tell them that I'm a poor bum hitting the road with no money.
