Some holiday snaps? Go on, then. Kessingland beach.

The Royal Arcade in Norwich. I have a weakness for art nouveau.

And for the purists, Norwich cathedral. I think I may have been a Benedictine monk in a previous life.

Could be! Could be taken on a holiday! Snap, snap, grin, grin, nudge, nudge.

This is Uncle Ted in front of the house. This is Uncle Ted at the back of the house. And this is Uncle Ted at the side of the house. This is Uncle Ted, back again at the front of the house, but you can see the side of the house. And this is Uncle Ted even nearer the side of the house, but you can still see the front. This is the back of the house, with Uncle Ted coming round the side to the front.

And this is some holiday chalets in Kessingland.

This is Ness Point, in Lowestoft; the most Easterly place in Britain.

And this is a 200-year old, Grade 1 listed monument to Admiral Lord Nelson, right in the middle of an industrial estate in Great Yarmouth. Eerie place.

Apparently there are numerous statues to Lord Nelson all over England and elsewhere; all worth the effort to blow up! I’ve been to Trafalgar Square and seen that silly column with Lord Nelson at the top staring towards France.

Is that Nelson on top or is that Britannia, ruling the waves?

If you liked the old Top Gear show, there was a funny episode where Clarkson drove a Jag from Land's End to Ness Point on the night of the summer solstice. Took off at sunset in an effort to beat the sunrise. Good fun.

Britannia, supported by six caryatids; bearers of Truth, Wisdom and Justice.

Has to be said those virtues were in short supply when Britannia ruled the waves.

I'm not here to be a tattletale, but the caryatids seem to be goofing off and playing quoits when they should be concentrating on their Truth-, Wisdom- & Justice-bearing. (btw, caryatids != katydids. No relationship.)

Our record on caryatids isn't much to write home about, either.

The best-known and most-copied examples are those of the six figures of the Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis at Athens. One of those original six figures, removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century in an act which severely damaged the temple and is widely considered to be vandalism and looting, is currently in the British Museum in London.

Jackoffs on tall columns are a staple in many countries. The demented British are the worse offenders however and deserve top billing in Ripely’s believe it or not.

The Irish never offend in this manner because they are always too drunk to build anything over 3 feet tall.

Hmmm

The Irish were impressive in helping to build the transcontinental railroad. They also helped save hand equipment as they could pound in the railroad spikes just by using their foreheads.

Would someone reassure me that Zeno is meeting modern community standards for political correctness?

Done. He exceeds all standards in every category. Like an EastEnder Pub hopping on a Friday afternoon!

It's the Coronation. Few have witnessed one, and I doubt anyone knows exactly what to expect. Lots of flags, road closures, and provincial motorcycle cops cruising about, preparing to escort the extra VIPs. A cortege passes by at Victoria, led by two cars full of diplomatic heavies with open-necked shirts and anxious looks. Relatively quiet and almost upside-down; not much like a normal, crowded Friday.

Well it’s finished and mostly went according to plan.

Long live the King!!

What is Charlie going to do now? His role is mostly ceremonial. I think he should start a war with the French to kick things into high gear and show his strength.

Well, let's be specific: only one of the Charlie's roles is ceremonial, and we've got the one who is meaningful.

Heard a report that there was a disturbance by republicans during the parade. (The ones who want to get rid of the monarchy, not the big R US version). Was it much of a disturbance?

Not much of one, I think. Happily, most of the arrests were merely for "conspiracy to cause a public nuisance". A few months in the Tower of London ought to be sufficient to sort them out. A much greater disturbance was the weather, as it didn't stop raining all day. Not heavy rain, but a relentless drizzle. Not ideal for the tourist trade.

Charlie should declare war on China and demand they open their borders to the British opium trade. The French are so yesterday.

Excellent idea. The silly French are passé.

Once Charlie slaps China back to the 1800’s, he can invade the East Coast of America and take back the original colonies. He would be doing the rest of America a big favor. It’s basically a disaster area anyway.
