Where & When Trivia: Series

I did a series of posts analyzing the 2015 baseball schedule last year. Well, it's another year, so there's another schedule to peruse. For example: Sabo's Padres Unnatural Rival is the Orioles this year. And... for the first time ever his Padres will play @Toronto. I promised I'd post Sabo & my baseball picks too (at end).

The Pirates home/road split is 81/79, the Marlin's is 79/81. This reflects two neutral site games between the teams May 30 & 31 @Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Marlins will bat second. The rest of the team's splits are 81/81.

Once again, for no particular reason, a few teams have 39/37 or 37/39 divisional home/away splits. In fact, four years in now, it's pretty obvious MLB couldn't care less about evening out these odd games. But Sabo's happy... so far this has worked to his Padres advantage:

Home/Road2016201520142013
10/9dm, gn, rcdd, gndm, rcdd, dm, gn
9/10dddm, rcdd, gnrc
4/3ex, mtpr, mz, excb, mz, phex, mt
3/4bz, cr, ph, rdbr, bz, crbr, cr, exbz, cb, mz, pr
3/3br, cb, mz, prcb, mt, ph, rd, rnbz, mt, pr, rdbr, cr, ph, rd
2/2mr, orat, mrmr, twmr, or
3/0rs, yn astg, rybj, yn
0/3bj, dranin, wsdr, rs

The All-Star break is four days... July 11 to 14. Besides the All-Star break, only the Royals had more than one scheduled day off in a row (4-4 and 4-5). The July 12th All-Star game itself will feature a first... the host NL will be batting first. This is because the 2015 game was in Cincinnati, the 2017 game will be in Miami, and the 2018 game will be in DC... four NL hosts in a row. So... sure, let's screw the San Diego fans... typical.

Each team plays 25 series. Of these 13 are over the weekends. Back in the Missile era, MLB used to balance road visits between weekend and weekday series. This is no longer the case. Of those 780 series, 563 (72%) are three games, 184 (24%) are four games, and 33 (4%) are two games.

Common series are 297 Fri-Sun, 186 Mon-Wed, 86 Thu-Sun, 75 Tue-Thu, 61 non-split Mon-Thu, 31 Tue-Wed (29 interleague), and 29 'split/4' series (all interleague), where the teams play Mon & Tue at one team's stadium, then Wed & Thu at the other team's stadium.

Oddball series are six Fri-Mon 'wrap-around' series, three scheduled Mon/Wed/Thu season opening series (although two ended up being Tue-Thu because of Monday postponement), a Thu/Sat/Sun Nationals series, and season opening Mon-Tue, Sun/Tue, Sun/Tue/Wed, and Sun/Tue/Wed/Thu series. Oh yeah... one other Mon-Thu 'split/4': the first two games in San Juan, the second two @Miami.

Decided on a whim to go to the cardroom to watch some of the baseball games instead of the bar. Figured I'd save some money. Which was working fine until my second to last hand... when my $~300 profit turned into an $85 loss. Ouch.

Sunday 10:10: Phillies @Mets
Sunday 1:10: Cubs @D’backs

Now that the MLB season has started, let's take a Sabo-Metric look at the SDDC race (below). And yes... there really is a serious Sabo-Metric prediction model. This model handicaps the underlying MLB teams, handicaps the ever charging dog game schedule, and even attempts to handicap the rule changing whims of the Competition Committee. This year I've added a c++ monte-carlo simulation into the model.

Of note: The defending champion Cardinals (above) are only projected to repeat 3% of the time. They begin dog game play next month. OTOH the first place White Sox are projected as the #3 favorite to end up in first... 9% of the time. Tomorrow morning, the #1 favorite Mets, in front of NYFD (New York's Finest Dogs), will host the long-shot Phillies.

Tomorrow afternoon, the #5 favorite D'backs will have the grand opening of their brand new new PetSmart Patio indoor/outdoor dog park... making them the new alpha-dog (game) MLB team. They will be hosting the mighty Cubs. I know... the mighty who? Well... the Cubs won the 2005 SDDC Championship, and have a perfect 5-0 record in official SDDC games. The only team with a better record, and the only other undefeated team, is their cross-town rival... the mighty White Sox. Combined the two Chicago teams are 13-0 with six SDDC championships.

First Quarter Report
~ More Second Grade

We've been regularly attending Second Grade of Petco's Obedience School and our next class (April 8) will be graduation. Second Grade is group training... and so far, Sabo's been the star pupil !!!1!
My plan for Q1 was two fold: (1) do an in depth review of The State of Sabo, and an in depth review of Operation Sabo Training, like I did two years ago with the infamous Bottom 10 List... except not in such a way this time to make Sabo look like a little monster (which he isn't... he's a good dog !!!1!), and (2) finally finish Second Grade.

Well... I was a failure at both. So far, as I mentioned, I'm chugging with this whole 2016: The Year of New Tricks® project, most of which doesn't concern Sabo. So, although I did a superficial 'triage' review of my Sabo doctrine, the in depth formal review hasn't been a high enough priority IRL to get done. So far this hasn't set OST back, as I had scheduled the next phase to coincide with promotion from Second Grade. Second Grade, as in the lesson content, has been coming along nicely. This time my plan was to take the classes every other week, instead of weekly, to give us more time with the 'homework', and to better fit my schedule. That part worked great.

However... Sabo's personal trainer C had to miss a class, which set the promotion date back from 3-27 to 4-8. Then that Friday the other dogs didn't show up for class, so it got postponed. I initially said Sabo would be available to make up the last class this Friday 4-15. But I'm going to have to cancel now, as Sabo will be at the airport then picking up Sister J. Sabo might not be available the next Friday after that 4-22... because the three of us might be on a road trip.

So, in lieu of any Q1 status to report, I'll blog about Second Grade itself.

What I'm referring to is Adult Dog Level II of Petco's Positive Dog Training. This is pretty much the same stuff as Level I: come here, sit, stay, leave it, etc. The difference is instead of 1-on-1 personal training in the privacy of the training room... it's with a class of dogs, and a lot of it is out in the busy store. The 'positive' refers to the training program using only positive reinforcement, and never any scolding, etc. It's only 'obedience' school in name.. there's no obedience, as in discipline, involved.

As for our class... well, first of all Sabo s his personal trainer C. He loves going to school so, so much. I'm almost jealous... not like there's any question about Sabo loves most in the world... but because he's way more playful with C than he is with me. He'll keep on keeping on with his very light roughhousing with C. With me he'll quickly tire with the play, and go straight for getting the love (usually in the form of a belly rubbing). We started class with a Sabo sized white fluffy mop-like dog, owned by a ~65 lady, a brown mini-poodle, about maybe 1.5x Sabo size, owned by a ~65 lesbian couple, and two young & large & strong Rhodesian Ridgebacks (who are stll growing), owned by a ~25 hetro couple, the wife of which is quite pregnant.

It turned out the fluffy white dog peed itself every time it got near the Ridgebacks, or got near Sabo, or near C, etc. So they dropped out quickly. Now, IDK what the issues were, i any... but the two people couples did not get along. About halfway through the term, on a day the husband didn't make it, there had been some words exchanged. Then one of the lesbians said "control your dog!" to the pregnant lady. The pregnant lady stormed out of the store. Then C more-or-less read the two ladies the riot act. Not literally, of course, because they are customers... but he was clearly upset with them.

Spoiler:

Sabo's smart too !!!1!

Even though Sabo didn't get promoted last Friday, he did get a bonus half an hour review session with his personal trainer C. Even C, who deals with dogs for a living, had to stop and say: "that's one very happy dog, just look at his smile!". Gotta that Sabo... he's a Good Guy !!!1!

He might not be as smart as The Missile was, but she was objectively an especially smart dog... but his personal trainer C calls Sabo his smartest pupil. We've been doing some of our 'homework' on unsupervised stays in the kitchen at the Sabotat. So... I'd put some food down, have Sabo sit & stay, then walk away out of sight around the corner. No matter how stealthy I tried to be... he'd always know exactly when I was about to come back. At first I was stumped... how can he do that ??

Sabo Big Day™ Announce: Rancho Cucamonga Road Trip

Sunday in Phoenix, the mighty Cubs kept the Chi-town SDDC record perfect, beating the D'backs 5-2. Earlier in the day, the Phillies surprised the Mets in front of NYFDs. Although the D'backs, and former favorite Mets, chances of winning the SDDC championship took major blows, both teams play enough dog games to overcome an early lose. OTOH the Phillies' chances quadrupled, and the Cubs have moved up to third favorite.

I've blogged the definitive list of Cactus League dog games. I didn't advertise it as such, but believe me... Sabo went to the only Cactus League dog game. I called all the other box offices to double-check. I've blogged the definitive list of All-Star Games. That's not historically a joke, as two games were played 1959-1962. I've blogged what I really feel is the definitive list of MLB dog games. Oh my... the efforts I put in just to make Sabo happy. Above... behold... the definitive list Southern California & Southern Nevada Minor League Dog Games !!!1!

Sabo & me had so much fun when we went to the 66ers game last year, I decided to research MiLB dog games for this year too. There are seven MiLB teams within a reasonable distance from the Sabotat. Two of those, the Blaze and Mavericks, don't do dog games. The other five do... and Sabo's scheduled to attend four of them !!!1! The alpha-dog (game) leader continues to be the 66ers. This year it's "Snack Attack Sundays" instead of "Man's Best Friend Mondays". When I called them, they said they moved the dog games to Sunday because they didn't have very many Monday home games this year.

We'll be making a return road trip to San Manuel Stadium @San Bernardino to again see the Storm @66ers. We'll also be making road trips to The Hanger @Lancaster CA, and Cashman Field @Las Vegas, NV. These will be new stadiums for both of us. However, I won't be making a return visit, and Sabo won't be making his first visit, to the one stadium he most wanted to attend: The Diamond @Lake Elsinore... home of his Padres' High-A Lake Elsinore Storm. The Storm scheduled their dog day on May Day this year... and we all know Sabo already has plans for that day.

However, first up is tomorrow's Sabo Big Day™: The Rancho Cucamonga Road Trip. We're going to be driving to LoanMark Field (fka The Epicenter) in Rancho Cucamonga, CA to see the 66ers @Quakes. This is a surrogate Freeway Series game, as the Quakes are the Dodgers' High-A team, while the 66ers are the Angels'. It's also a big SDDC game for both organizations. A 66er win wouldn't mathematically eliminate the Dogders, but they'd be hung with the dreaded "~0"... having a projected 0.03% chance of winning the SDDC. OTOH, a Quake win would mathematically eliminate the 66ers, and make the Dodgers the new favorite (at 12%).

Sabo Big Day™: Pickup Sister J & 2nd Grade Promotion 4-15

Upon further review, Sabo should have plenty of time to pick Julietinozi (his Aunt J, my Sister J) up at the airport, and still make it to obedience school at Petco. So first Sabo can help me with the ongoing Spring Cleaning 2017 (and no, 2017 is not a typo), then say hi to maybe his favorite female in the world, then... if the young Rhodesian Ridgeback brothers show up this time, he'll finally complete 2nd Grade.

With Sabo's big IWW meeting on Sunday, I'm sure that my (perhaps six) readers are wondering, why not make this into a full-scale Sabo Big Weekend™? The reason being is that Julietinozi & MissileDog are going to see his Padres @Petco on Saturday night... and he can't go too. He's already bitter about that. Gotta that Sabo... he's a good guy !!!1!

Sabo Big Day™ Wrap: Pickup Sister J & 2nd Grade Promotion 4-15

Since we had told Sabo what was going on today, he was restless all morning long. Sabo is a 'go' dog... he doesn't care to be waiting around. Sabo did have plenty of time to pick Julietinozi (his Aunt J, my Sister J) up at the airport, and still make it to obedience school at Petco. Right there we had a very happy dog.

Not only did the Rhodesian bros show up, a third Rhodesian Ridgeback, and their ~ 25 owner dude joined us too. The new dog, a female, was a little older and a little bigger than the bros... but otherwise they all looke identical. This last class of 2nd grade was surprisingly tough... to get us ready for 3rd Grade we were told. We were out in the store off-leash having the dogs walk circles around each other, etc... without treats. Sabo was again the star pupil... and like always had an absolute blast. Gotta that Sabo... he's a good guy!!!1!

To celebrate Sabo's promotion, we went out drinking at the new dive bar #66: The Clutch Bar. The Clutch Bar is located where the defunct dive bar #6: Morena Club used to be. Well, I had a coupla beers... but Sabo had a nice bowl of ice water courtesy of our handlebar mustached barkeep Sam. Sam also offered Sabo some popcorn... which Sabo rejected. Finding another quality dog friendly bar... the perfect ending to another classic Sabo Big Day™

The defunct Morena Club (dive bar #6) has reopened as the Clutch Bar (dive bar #66)

Sabo Big Day™ Wrap: Rancho Cucamonga Road Trip

First, LOL@me for blogging I had the definitive list of local MiLB dog games. It turns out every Wednesday night game @LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga is "Bark at the Park"... seven in all. Behold... version two of the MiLB list above. If I had known, we would have waited to see Sabo's Padres' Storm there later in the season.

We left the Sabotat at rush hour, 4:30 PM. But... we had surprisingly fluid traffic, arriving at 6:30 for the 7:05 first pitch. Sabo intently watched the road, standing right by my right side, the whole way up. The ballpark is just off I-15, so no new milage for Sabo. Well, not counting the night construction work detours coming back onto CA-91, CA-60, and CA-79. Sabo let me down as a navigator... as he crawled into his nest, set up in the back of the minvan, and slept through all of this. We didn't get back until 1:30 AM.

LoanMart Field is situated in Rancho Cucamonga's Adult Sports Park. You can watch some serious softball games on the fields surrounding the stadium strolling up to the gate. This Grillias-Pirc-Rosier-Alves design was named the Epicenter when it opened in 1993. It's another nice modern MiLB/spring/college sized baseball stadium. They don't have a lawn section. Instead, the dogs were welcome in the main seating bowl on the first base (visitor) side, and the picnic area down the first base line. Parking is $5, dog admission is $3. Human admission depends where you want to sit. The picnic area was $10. We got a front row table, about 50 feet past the 66ers dugout.

The box score shows a paid attentence of 820. I'd WAG ~600 people and ~30 dogs. The Quakes did a great job hosting the game, with their perky on-field host out every half inning having some contest, giveaway, or here on "Bark at the Park" night, showcasing some dogs up for adoption. It being a Dodgers farm team, they even have official Dodger Dogs.

Sabo, with his classic dog looks, and his Padres shirt, and his wonderful behavior, was the consensus MVD... Most Venerated Dog. He got a little good natured teasing at this Dodgers venue about being a Padres dog with a Giants leash... but I just whipped out his Dodgers bandana and tied that around his neck. The 66er pitchers and catchers, walking right by to/from their bullpen, also were paying Sabo attention. In fact, when they had closed up shop, the food crew came over and gave Sabo his very own Dodger Dog. Gotta that Sabo... he's a good guy !!!1!

Code:
1. 1-0 1.000 -- Dodgers 12%, White Sox 11%, Cubs 7%, Phillies 4%
5. 1-1 .500 ½ Sabo's Padres 4%
6. 0-0 -- ½ Rays 3%, (20-team field) 51%
27. 0-1 .000 1 Mets 4%, D'backs 4%, Royals ~0

X-66ers(an) 0-1. % All-Star Sabo-Metrics
4-17 Sunday 10:10: White Sox @Rays

Oh yeah... they played a baseball game too.

It's been a tough start for the 66ers. They lost 2-7, dropping their season record to 0-7. We'll 'scrapbook' the 66er players when Sabo sees them again in July. Suffice to say that the Angels #24 prospect, starter and loser Justin Anderson (0-2), gave up four runs in only 3⅓ innings (#s as per MLB's Pipeline). The 66ers got only five hits. And... their loss eliminates the Angels organization from the SDDC. Ouch.

OTOH, the defending California League champion Quakes improved their record to 4-3. Starter Brock Stewart (2-0) pitched six strong innings, surrendering only one run on three hits and a walk, for the win. Luis de Palma pitched a scoreless 1⅓ for the save. The Dodgers #3 prospect, SP Grant Holmes didn't relieve. Notable hitters were #10 Yusniel Diaz CF 0-3 BB, #27 Johan Mieses LF 0-5, #29 Julian Leon C 2-4, Tim Locastro SS 2-4 SB, and Mike Ahmed 3B 2-3 BB.

Next up in the dog game season: The mighty White Sox have travelled all the way to Russia, to take on the dogs of St.Petersburg tomorrow morning. A White Sox win would move them back into undisputed first place, make them the new favorite (at 22%), and eliminate the Rays. Since Chi-town teams never lose SDDC games (they're a combined 14-0), let's hope the Rays... enjoy their Dirt Sandwich.

Re: Flower, Cinnamon Stick, & Sabo

Well, Sabo was pretty miffed last night. He's the big Padres fan in the house and all... but here Julietinozi and I were going to the game, and he couldn't go. To make matters worse, I suggested we sneak out when he was out yapping his disappointment... and I forgot to put the game on the radio for him.

It was Julietinozi's first game @Petco. I'll let her blog her impressions... including paying our respects at Sabo's shrine: the Tony Gwynn Sr statue in the park-at-the-park. Sabo's Padres won 4-3 in the 14th.

I knew I had to do something special today to make up for last night. Luckily... it was the third Sunday, so it was Sabo's big IWW meeting. This was the last planning meeting for the most wonderful day of the year... May Day... and big parade (above)... and our big IWW after party show featuring the Haymarket Squares, with Grandpadrew, Mike Pope & Miah Spring. Which Sabo is going to help host on May Day, Sunday May 1st, 7pm @SDEA Union Hall, 10393 San Diego Mission Road (below).

Between having Julietinozi around the Sabotat, then visiting his brothers at the union hall, Sabo's just been surrounded by people he already know and likes... and his always growing confidence and maturity... has just made for one happy and outgoing doggy. Gotta that Sabo... he's a good guy !!!1!

I've blogged, more or less, definitive lists of MLB (62), Cactus League (1), and MiLB (4 for Sabo) dog games. The Competition Committee has yet to explain 'envisioning'... but they have stated the All-Star Game will be an official SDDC game (1). Now... behold above... the absolutely definitive list of 2016 'knothole' games (5). That's a 73 game SDDC season... up 17 from 2015.

I'm not planning to have Sabo attempt to 'knothole' anywhere new this year. So by absolutely definitive I just mean "when I feel like taking Sabo to the Hotel Indigo". And since the dog game season is, as always, subject to change... it also just means "... as of right now".

We've already done a spring 'knothole' game on April Fools. Tomorrow is Canine Cocktails for April. Sabo had a blast when I took him last year... so we'll give it another try -vs- the Pirates. May Canine Cocktails is also on the 19th -vs- the Giants. Pencil that game in too. I figure I'll take Sabo to 'knothole' an Orioles and an Yankees game. That way all 30 MLB teams will have an official SDDC game this season... a first. The June Canine Cocktails is on the 23rd... a day Sabo's Padres are out of town. Canine Cocktails for Jul, Aug, Sep are TBA... and I'm not promising Sabo any 'knothole' games after the All-Star Game.

Code:
1. 1-0 1.000 -- Dodgers 14%, Cubs 7%, Rays 6%, Phillies 4%
5. 1-1 .500 ½ Sabo's Padres 4%, White Sox ~0
7. 0-0 -- ½ Pirates 9%, Tigers 2%, (18-team field) 46%
27. 0-1 .000 1 Mets 4%, D'backs 4%, Royals ~0

X-66ers(an) 0-1. % All-Star Sabo-Metrics.
4-17: White Sox 2 @Rays 3
4-19 Tuesday 4:10: Tigers @Royals
4-19 Tuesday 7:10: Pirates @Padres ~ Knothole

Yesterday, in an upset of epic proportions in the dog game world, the mighty White Sox (+102) lost to the St.Petersburg dogs of Russia 2-3. The loss ruined the Chi-town SDDC perfect 14-0 record, and hung the White Sox with the dreaded "~0"... at 0.1%.

Besides tomorrow's Pirates @Padres 'knothole' game, they're also letting the dogs into Kauffman Stadium to see the Royals take on the Tigers. This is the game Sabo had his heart set on attending way back at the beginning of spring training. We'll be 'knotholing' Petco instead that evening. This is an elimination game (again) for the Royals. This is also the Tigers very first ever official SDDC game.

Re: Flower, Cinnamon Stick, & Sabo

Is it a S3D™er if Sabo's going to Vegas
??

Yes, of course. Welcome to Sabo's big spring vacation. This will be Sabo's fifth overnight road trip, his fourth trip to Arizona, his second trip to Nevada, and his first ever trip to Las Vegas. This is our plan...
  • Friday: Sabo & Julietinozi & myself will head out from the Sabotat at 0-dark-30, and drive directly to Kingman Park, Kingman AZ. After Sabo romps in one of his favorite dog parks, we're going to spend the day visiting our Uncle J in Kingman. In a surprise, Sabo's Uncle H (our Cousin H) will be driving up from Surprise to join us. Uncle J is one of Sabo's favorite peeps. That evening, we'll be continuing on to Vegas, baby, Vegas. We're staying downtown on the Fremont Street Experience. Which didn't exist last time I was in downtown Vegas... like the whole city, even though I used to be a reg back in the day, it'll all be new to me now.

  • Saturday: Julietinozi is flying out of McCarran to whatever foreign country she lives in. Sabo & me will be meeting up with The Missile's roommate and Uncle G (my brotherman and former roommate). G is a Vegas native who'll be our tour guide to the new city.

  • Sunday: Sabo & me will be attending the PCL AAA game at Las Vegas's Cashman Field. We've invited a mystery guest from right here at 2+2. This will the 10th professional baseball game Sabo has attended, in his 8th different stadium. That evening, we'll be driving to Parker AZ, where we'll be the guest of my brotherman D's at his vacation house on the river. D is one of Sabo's favorite people too.

  • Monday: We'll be a day late for The Desert Bar this season, but the Parker Strip on the river should be rocking. That evening, Sabo & me will make the long drive back to the Sabotat. Alas, Sabo's God-Uncle B is out of the country on another one of his business trips... or we'd stop by Yuma too.

Sabo Big Day™ Wrap: Canine Cocktails 4-19

Sabo went to his second Canine Cocktails Tuesday night... and again had a blast. Like last season, the happy hour event was well attended, with the well behaved off-leash dogs having the run of the rooftop bar... and Sabo took care of business on the doggy comfort turf. Alas, no vendors giving out dog food samples... Sabo really, really, really liked what he got last season. After a coupla innings, we got the prime baseball watching seats next to the western fireplace. This was Julietinozi, and my long time friend JQs, first visit to Level Nine @Hotel Indigo. We'll be back in exactly one month !!!1!

It was a good game, with Sabo's Padres overcoming a 0-3 deficit. However it was a long game, setting the Padres time record for a 9-inning game... 4:01 in only 8½. This was mainly because of a screwy reversal of a reversal of a balk... and the arguments which ended up getting new Padres manager A.Green thrown out of his first MLB game. This is relevant because Level Nine closes at 10pm. Sabo listened to the end of the game back at the Sabotat.

In other dog game action yesterday, and the game Sabo originally had his heart set on attending, the Royals hung the Tigers with the dreaded "~0". The dog game season finishes it's second month with a flurry... five games in four days, three of which feature the Mets organization. The theme here is beginnings: new & original.

Code:
4-19: Tigers 6 @Royals 8
4-19: Pirates 4 @Padres 5 ~ Knothole

1. 1-0 1.000 -- Dodgers 14%, Cubs 8%, Rays 6%, Phillies 5%
5. 2-1 .667 -- Sabo's Padres 6%
6. 1-1 .500 ½ Royals, White Sox ~0
8. 0-0 -- ½ ex 11%, rd 4%, rc 3%, br 2%, tw ~0, (13 teams) 29%
26. 0-1 .000 1 dm, mt, pr 4%, tg ~0. X-an

4-23 Saturday 10:05: Twins @Nationals
4-24 Sunday 10:35: Mets @Braves
4-24 Sunday 12:05: Isotopes(rc) @51s(mt) ~ MiLB, Sabo!!!1!
4-24 Sunday 1:10: Pirates @D’backs
4-26 Tuesday 4:10: Reds @Mets

The Mets were the morning line SDDC favorite. However, they stumbled out of the gate losing to the Phillies. This is the Mets new beginning. If they sweep these three games they could well be favorites again. OTOH, if they get swept, they could well be eliminated. The Pirates and D'backs, third & fourth morning line favorites, also lost coming out of the gate. Sunday their opportunity to rise from those ashes is fittingly in Phoenix... as they play the first of their home/away dog game series.

Five teams will have their original beginnings. The second favorite Nationals start dog game play Saturday. A win would make them the favorites. They'll be hosting the Twins, who are in an elimination game... as it's their only scheduled SDDC game. A Twins win would eliminate the Tigers. The Braves start dog game play Sunday with the penultimate "Bark in the Park" @Turner Field. A Mets win would hang the Braves with the dreaded "~0". The Reds start dog game play Tuesday @Citi Field.

The Rockies organization will also start dog game play on Sunday in the featured game... @Cashman Field in Las Vegas NV. That's where the Mets AAA Las Vegas 51s (named after the top-secret Area 51) host the Rockies AAA Albuquerque Isotopes (named after a Simpsons episode). Sabo will be in attendance !!!1!

Schedule subject to change. % All-Star Sabo-Metrics. Org abbr. Previous.

Top 10: Nationals 15%, Dodgers 14%, Cubs 8%, rc 7%, Rays 6% 1-0;
Padres 6% 2-1; Pirates 6% 1-1; Mariners 6%; Phillies 5% 1-0; Astros 5%.

Also: mt 3% 2-2; D'backs 2% 0-2; Reds 1%, Braves ~0 0-1;
(14-team field) 16% 2-3. X-an, Twins 0-1.

4-24: Isotopes(rc) 6 @51s(mt) 5 ~ MiLB, Sabo!!!1!

The feature SDDC game last week was the PCL AAA matchup in Las Vegas: Albuquerque Isotopes, the new flagship of the Rockies organization @Las Vegas 51s, the new flagship of the Mets organization. From the "oh yeah, they played a game too" category... the Isotopes won in a good see-saw game. I'll 'scrap-book' the game, and blog Cashman Field vs the Hanger, when Sabo attends the Rockies high-A Lancaster Jethawks game June 7th.

I knew where Cashman Field was in general, and could locate it by the distinctive light towers... that I had seen on TV many times over the years during spring training. However, it wasn't clear to me exactly where the entrance was. Luckily for us, I noticed the Stateside Lounge (below) had an advertisement for a 51s fan beer special. I figured that would be just the place to ask for directions. The day bartender, the lovely and talented Joyce, poured me a 51s beer, while I told her about taking Sabo to the 51s game. She said since I'm a customer, I could park in their lot... if I promised to bring Sabo back for a visit when she was off work after the game. Which I did, of course (out front, as they have a kitchen). I was consider OK I guess... because my name IRL isn't "Mike". All in all, Joyce treated us like we were long time locals... we'll be back to my new favorite Vegas bar & grill !!!1!
4-23: Twins 0 @Nationals 2
4-24: Mets 3 @Braves 2
4-24: Pirates 12 @D’backs 10
4-26: Reds 3 @Mets 4
This week's theme was Beginnings. Five organizations make their dog season debut. The Nationals won, and became the new favorite. The Isotopes win moved the Rockies organization into the tie for first. OTOH the Reds lost @Citi Field, the Braves were hung with the dreaded "~0" by losing the penultimate "Bark in the Park" @Turner Field, and the Twins were eliminated by their loss @Nationals Park. The Pirates experienced a new beginning by winning in Phoenix, becoming a #5 favorite. OTOH even with Mets wins over the Braves and Reds, the 51s loss dropped the organization's All-Star Sabo-Metric projected chances from 4% to 3%, while the D'backs loss dropped them into dead last at 0-2.

May Day Sunday 1:10 mst: Rockies @D’backs

The dog game season continues in Phoenix on May Day. A Rockies win would move the organization into undisputed first place, and make them the new favorite. OTOH, an Arizona win would move the D'backs out of dead last, and hang the Rockies organization with the dreaded "~0".

Sabo Big Weekend™ Anno: May Day !!!1!

My, how time flies. We're already around to another The Most Wonderful Day of the Year ... May Day. Sabo's now four, this is his third May Day as Sabo, and he's yet to march in the parade. Two years ago, it was his fault... as he hurt my knee at City College. Two years ago he missed the big IWW after party, and last year the march, through no fault of his own. He's made the big rally every time however. This year Sabo gets to do it all... finally !!!1!
  • But... it's a traditional Sabo Big Weekend™ (which we haven't had for a while), so there's just gotta be more goin' on... right? Well, of course. This evening Sabo will be going to a new dog friendly bar... Dive Bar #67: The Sidecar. This is remodeled version of the old O'Connells, etc, and is directly across the street from Dive Bar #66 that Sabo visited recently.

  • Saturday Sabo & me are going on the "Pets on the Bay" harbor cruise. This will be Sabo's first boat ride... and upon the seas a new Sabo Quest will be proclaimed !!!1!

  • May Day we'll start out with a visit to Sabo's shrine... the Tony Gwynn Sr statue. Sabo hasn't sniffed it this whole darn year yet. Then it'll be onto Chicano Park. There... like two years ago... we'll make our own private march to City College. We'll go up Logan, then 16th, this time. Then... assuming Sabo doesn't hurt me again... we'll march in the main parade back to Chicago Park. Afterwards... it's on to the SDEA union hall in Mission Valley... where Sabo & me will help host the big IWW Haymarket Squares after party and concert (below). We'll finish the day off with a little late night 'direct action' off-leash on Missile Beach, and then a night at the Beach Shack.

  • Monday, before noon by tradition of course, Sabo & me will finally have breakfast at the Single Fin. This is a bar&grill whose history includes both Tom Waits & Cinnamon Stick. Then we'll top this SBW™ off with a visit to Dog Beach.

April Monthly Report
~ Actual New Tricks

OK. Sabo got promoted from 2nd Grade, as I blogged, it's time to fully resume Operation Sabo Training. After a full and careful and official 2016: Year of New Tricks® style review...
Sabo's training targets are now (a) formal graduation from 3rd Grade w/AKC exam, this includes not running into the street and tactical anti-yapping, and (b) continued maintenance of "drop it". Resumption of previous attempts at (c) hand shakes, and (d) kennel training. Sabo's new lifetime hobby will be as an (e) Agility Dog. Including immediate targets of (i) play dead, (ii) jump up into my arms, (iii) jump through hoops. A (f) strategic anti-yapping plan of action TBA 2nd Quarter Report.

Sabo's 2nd Quest: The Intermodal Sabo !!!1!

OK, maybe this isn't going to be Sabo's favorite Quest. The initial Tri-Canyon Quest was going to be pretty hard to top... so just figure it's the sophomore jinx. But the Quest is for Sabo to...
Quest by Questing upon the paw (done: Tri-Canyon Quest), the water, as carried (1 mile), in a pedicab, car (done), cab (done), Lyft (etc), bus, trolley, train (tourist version done), boat (tourist version done today), plane, and in a wild-card manner yet to be imagined. Tourist version alone does not satisfy the Quest.
The May report, now rescheduled as the next upcoming report, will delve into these life-changing decisions regarding Sabo and his future. Previous: Anno., January Part I, Part II (late May), February, March, First Quarter. Forward: && 2016YONT &&.

May Day: Rockies (2-0 16%) 6 @D’backs (0-3 1%) 3
5-3 Tuesday 4:05: Cubs (1-0 10%) @Pirates (1-1 5%)
5-3 Tuesday 5:10: Giants (4%) @Reds (0-1 1%)
5-14 Saturday 4:05: Marlins (2%) @Nationals (1-0 14%)
5-14 Saturday 5:05: Blue Jays (~0) @Rangers (3%)
5-15 Sunday 1:10: Giants @D’backs

May Day, the Rockies beat the D'backs @Chase Field's "Bark at the Park". The win moved the Rockies organization into undisputed first place, and they became the new All-Star Sabo-Metric favorite to win the SDDC. To be clear, yesterday's "Bark at the Park" is the yearly large scale dog game... $20 before fees per dog & person in the bleachers, or $28 in Baseline Reserved. Every Sunday @Chase Field is a "Dog Days of Summer". That means there are 30 available "... ticket packages... for $160 and include a semi-private space with all the necessities for four people and one dog. Each table comes with access to All-You-Can-Eat hot dogs, soda, water, popcorn, peanuts, and chips. A minimum of 4 [people] tickets must be purchased." Dogs are free.

The theme for the next five dog games is "All-Star Break". Not because the actual All-Star game is next week, or we're more than halfway through the dog game season... but because it is an All-Star season, and after tomorrow's dog games starts the longest hiatus in this year's dog game season.

A win by the mighty Cubs @PNC would tie them for first and make them co-favorites. Since they've never lost a dog game (6-0), a Pirates loss is inevitable. The Giants play twice on the road. A Giants sweep would tie them for first, and hang both the Reds and D'backs with the dreaded "~0". OTOH if the Giants are swept, they're hung with the dreaded "~0". A Marlins loss in DC would hang them with the dreaded "~0" while the Nationals would tie for first and become the new favorite. A Blue Jays win in Arlington would hang the Rangers with the dreaded "~0" while eliminating the idle Tigers. A Rangers win would eliminate the Blue Jays.

SBW™ Wrap: May Day !!!1!

To be clear, this is the wrap for the May Day SBW™... I'm still working on the wrap for the earlier Vegas S3D™. Two years ago Sabo had only been Sabo, and we'd only been together, for just 65 days. Before that he was Artie. Before that... well, he ain't sayin. But I'm thinking it might have been... Sabo. He answered with his 'leashing behavior' the very first time I called him with the name. And... now that we've been together over two years it's become obvious... the name really is apt. Sabo, among strangers, really is like his namesake Sabo-Tabby... always ready to 'Strike if Provoked', despite his diminutive size and otherwise happy manner. And... here on his third May Day as Sabo (again?)... it's become clear that May Day is Sabo's biggest day. He was born to lead this parade !!!1!

Sunday was a long, but great, day for Sabo. We started early with a visit to his shrine: the T.Gwynn Sr statue @Petco Park. Then we continued to Chicano Park, under the approaches of the Coronado Bridge. From there we did our 'One Dog Parade' up to City College. This time we went up Logan & 16th instead of National & Park. When we got to City College, Sabo was so very happy to find our union brothers at the pre-march rally. It was warm & sunny, but nothing like the triple digit hellish Santa Ana we had two years ago. Once again, Sabo was on-edge in the crowd. But he didn't go pulling-crazy like last time (or hurt me). I realize now it's just because it's May Day... Sabo's biggest day of the year. I also finally figured out why he was pulling-crazy in that one particular direction that fateful day. That's the direction the march departed at... it wasn't clear to me back then just what a 'go-dog' Sabo was. He just don't like waitin'.

After we completed the march (without injury or incident)... it was on to the SDEA Union Hall in Mission Valley where Sabo was the official host of the unofficial May Day afterparty and concert. The lovely and talented Miah Spring, who arrived early to work on her set and took an immediate liking to Sabo, the Haymarket Squares, Mike Post, the Alaska RR hat wearing Grandpadrew, and then a second set from the Haymarket Squares rocked the house 'till midnight. Sabo sat up in the chair next to me for a good part of the show. But, by the Haymarket Square's second set, he was starting to drift off. Despite the well amplified music, he took to curling up in the chair next to me... only to get startled awake by the applause between songs. Near the end, and during the load-out, I put him in the minvan so he could get some well earned rest.

Otherwise this weekend... Sabo & me didn't make it to Sidecar or Single Fin. Push those "back on the stack", as Megg would say back in college. We ended up at the Beach House Friday & Saturday, not Sunday... but Sabo still got his Midnight Missile Recognizance @Missile Beach, and his visit to Dog Beach, in on those days. And Sabo did in fact go to sea...

OK, not all the way to sea, but we did go on the "Pets on the Bay" harbor cruise Saturday morning. This cruise went out to mouth of the harbor at Ballast Point submarine base, then back along North Island aircraft carrier base, before crossing back over to Grape St Pier. The highlight of the trip was passing the Carl Vinson (CVN-70) coming into port... along with all the activity opening the 'gate' and among the 'pushers'.

Our captain, Captain Chad, asked Sabo's personal permission to sail. As in we were right up front, and the deck chair Sabo was sitting in had to be moved to access the auxiliary controls on the deck our captain used to back us out from the pier. I was the only person who noticed he was the captain, and was actively piloting the vessel. A clueless lady w/dog asked him where the restrooms were at... Captain Chad politely answered, without taking his eyes off the pier/controls... she thanked him and wandered off unawares. After he had backed us out, and turned, he closed up the aux controls and went up into the bridge.

We took the early (9:30) cruise, and it was a cool morning. Earlier that morning it was misting. I brought a jacket, and I was glad I did. When we had turned, and started motoring out into the harbor... with the wind off the harbor it was downright cold. Sabo was the lone dog to brave the elements leading the way on top up front !!!1! But after a while the cold got to Sabo too. So we went down inside to the main cabin for the middle of the cruise. The final part we spent on the main outside deck in back, which was warmer not being in the wind.

Sabo, for his part, had no reaction to being afloat. He had a blast, especially with all the other dogs... and he got a bag o'samples too. We had zero turbulence, thanks to Captain Chad, so maybe that explains it... but Sabo acted like an experienced 'sea-dog', and took the whole exercise in stride. Maybe he was 'Seafarin' Sabo' before ending up as a stray Artie in that Vista trailer park ??

Oh yeah, I did play some Poker on our Vegas trip. I also stopped by Lucky Lady after our return.

Of note: I thought the Gold Nugget room was very will run. Interestingly, a ~25 dude was 4-tabling Bovada while playing in the $1,2 game both mornings there. He said he was a professional sports bettor. I played Omaha high for the first time in my life... so I have a lifetime losing record in another poker game. I lost the $103 @Morongo by buying the button, pushing $97 on a $50 'splash-pot' promo hand (queens no good), folding around through the next blinds, then folding my button. Ouch. OTOH @Lucky Lady I more than doubled up on my second to last $2,3 hand (queens good) to 'save' the day.

Details: the $1,2 no-limit hold'em (12) @Golden Nugget was uncapped, @Morongo it was capped at $100. The $1,3 no-limit hold'em (13) was capped at $300. The $4,8 limit Omaha (4m) & Omaha/8 (4o) had a half-kill to $6,12 on back-2-back wins & $60 scoop respectively. Orleans and Golden Nugget were dropping $5 max, including the $2,4 limit hold'em (2), Morongo was dropping $7 max (all include promo).

Re: Flower, Cinnamon Stick, & Sabo

Friday April 22nd Sabo & Julietinozi & myself headed out early, and drove directly to Kingman Park, Kingman AZ. Sabo showed what a good road trip dog he really is !!11! Upon arrival, Sabo made his sixth visit over the last three years to the Kingman Park dog run. After his romp, we spend the day having a mini-family reunion at our Uncle J's house. Our cousin (Sabo's uncle) H drove up from Surprise AZ to join us. Uncle J is still one of Sabo's favorite peeps in the whole world !!!1!

We got into Vegas late Friday night... just enough time to tourist the Fremont Street Experience, which I had never experienced before. Saturday I took Julietinozi to the McCarron round-n-round maze so she could fly back home. That was the only visit I made to 'The Strip' this trip... cruising it in daylight. The rest of the day I spent with my brotherman G as we visited some local dive bars out in the neighborhoods. Late Saturday night was Sabo's turn to tourist Fremont street, and environs.

Sunday Sabo & me met 2+2 legend ILOVEPOKER929 for the first time IRL... at the highlight of the trip for Sabo: the 51s game. Afterwards we played some poker at the Orleans, while Sabo guarded my car. That night Sabo & me drove to Parker AZ. Between Temecula and Boulder City we made a figure-8, driving the stretch of I-40 through Needles eastbound twice. This second time the Red Dog bar was open (they open at 10am it seems). Strangely, a bar called the Red Dog isn't dog friendly... however the lovely & talented bartender Kalani came outfront and said hi to Sabo anyways.

Monday Sabo & me spent the whole day visiting my brotherman D at his Parker vacation house on the Colorado River. D is also still one of Sabo's favorite peeps in the world too !!!1! Tuesday morning Sabo & me drove to the Sabotat, via the unfortunate stop @Morongo, to give Sabo some more new milage on the way back. Once again, another great road trip with a Good Dog... and another classic Sabo Three Dayer™. Gotta that Sabo doggy, he's a good guy !!!1!

I'm going to put off the 'delving' until next time, and just give a quick report on Sabo lately. Since May Day Sabo's been keeping busy helping Grandpa out with his gardening, or napping next to me... and listening to his Padres, of course. But no big adventures, so he's been plenty ready to have some. This weekend was almost a 'Big Weekend', as we went to see his personal trainer C @Petco today, and he has his regular IWW meeting on Sunday.

Dog school was out today, as Sabo's classmates, the Rhodesian Ridgeback bros, were awaiting the imminent arrival of their new human puppy packmate. But we're going to start next week, and go six straight weeks on Friday, including Memorial weekend. We went over the lesson plan... to review, this is the final grade level with a real final test and diploma upon graduation. We also went over techniques I can use to teach Sabo the additional shiz I blogged in the April report.

The highlight was, of course, Sabo giving his personal trainer C the big greeting, and his outgoing confident style around him. He diden;t even notice the snake he had around his neck when we first walked in. Sabo's smile was so big I thought he might crack his snout. Gotta that Sabo... he's a good guy !!!1!

Sabo Big Day™ Anno: Canine Cocktails 5-19
  • Hello, and welcome back from the long dog game season all-star hiatus. There's been some news. First, almost two weeks ago, going into the hiatus, the mighty Cubs (7-0, 2-0 this season) won @PNC Park. This make them the new All-Star Sabo-Metric (%) favorite, and moved them into a tie first place tie with the Rockies organization.

  • The Giants also won going into the hiatus, @Great America. Yesterday, they also tied for first with their win @Chase. Thursday, in this week's feature game, they'll look to move into undisputed first place at 3-0. That's the evening Sabo will be 'knotholing' them from his third Canine Cocktails @Hotel Indigo. Just as I had promised him. That'll be our Sabo Big Day™ !!!1!

  • LOL@me for thinking I had the definitive dog game list & LOL@me for thinking I even had the definitive 'knothole' list. In a terrible typo on my part, the Astros will be making their dog debut at the White Sox's "Dog Day" tomorrow, not the Rangers. The White Sox still need a win to avoid elimination. I've decided to take Sabo to 'knothole' the Saturday Yankees 7:10 game, instead of the Friday 7:40 game, in consideration of Level-9's 10:00 closing time.

  • Coming out of the hiatus Saturday the Rangers, and the Marlins @Nationals Park, won their dog debuts. The Phillies hope to tie for first on Friday. The Pirates try to even their record tomorrow. Wednesday, the Mets and Nationals try to earn winning records @Citi. OTOH an Astro or Phillies loss would hang them with the dreaded "~0". Losses by the Reds going into the hiatus, and the D'backs yesterday, already have hung them with that "~0". The Braves need to win @PNC tomorrow, and win @Citizens on Friday, to avoid elimination. And... it's all over for the Blue Jays, who Saturday dined on the dirt @Globe Life.

  • My Red Sox announced their yearly "Bark in the Park": June 27th. It's a bargain at $10 per person, dogs free. Unfortunately, my Red Sox will be in St.Petersburg, Russia that day. FYI: they have played minor league dog games at Fenway in previous seasons. The closest Red Sox games @Fenway are four days before -vs- White Sox, or four days later -vs- Angels. Very temping, Fenway is #1 on my 'bucket list'... but, alas... no can do this season.

  • And in the real big news... we've been accepted for the Mariners @Padres June 2nd "Dog Days of Summer"!!!1! This is the game that's free for (2) people and (1) dog. We've previously learned that the subsequent four dog games, which the Padres are calling "Bark at the Park events" aren't going to be free. With our acceptance today we're now "eligible" for them. However... more info, it seems, will be forthcoming. I've already got tickets for the rest of Sabo's MLB games this year... mine too, including the All-Star game.

Sabo Big Day™ Wrap: Canine Cocktails 5-19

In dog game action, Tuesday the Pirates eliminated the Braves, and the Astros eliminated the White Sox. Wednesday, the Nationals hung the Mets with the dreaded "~0". The Braves hung the Phillies with the dreaded "~0" Friday.

As for the feature game, Tuesday Sabo attended his third Canine Cocktails @Hotel Indigo. Sabo has been here enough times now that he feels comfortable on his own... and I'm now comfortable with set up. So, Sabo spent the game exploring all over the bar, having a blast doing so, of course. And... we got some free food samples this time too. My long time friend JQ joined us again. As well as one of their customers... a white fluffy therapy dog named Lily.

Far below, Sabo's Padres lost a close game to the Giants 1-3. That win moved the Giants into undisputed SDDC first place... however All-Star Sabo-Metrics still has the idle Cubs as favorite (16%). Tomorrow we got a doggy doubleheader. The D'backs and Pirates conclude their home/away series @PNC, while the A's and Mariners make their dog debut @Safeco. An Oakland loss would hang them with the dreaded "~0".

Since I stopped playing poker regular, in 2012, we've lost four poker rooms in San Diego County: Santa Ysabel, Village Club, Palomar, and the room at Viejas. We did gain a new one however: Seven Mile in Chula Vista. I was out & about on Missile Day, was driving by, and decided stop in and play a few hands for the very first time. I even got a players card !!!1!

Seven Mile is the replacement for the Village Club, with the same ownership, and several of the same employees. They also had the same $300 cap $2,3 no-limit game ($5 drop on flop). That's four new to me cardrooms I've played at during the Sabo era (Marina Club, Golden Nugget, Orleans, Seven Mile... I'd previously played at Lucky Lady, Blue Water, Morongo).

Re: Flower, Cinnamon Stick, & Sabo

It's Memorial Weekend... of course it's a Sabo Three Dayer™

Can you believe it? This is Sabo & my third Memorial Weekend, and official summer season, together !!!1!

We'll start on Friday at 2pm, as Sabo gets a belated start to Third Grade with his personal trainer C at the Petco store. Then we're off the OTL island, where if I don't forget again, we'll try out that life preserver again. After 6pm, we're going to visit two beach front parks in La Jolla: Calumet & Windansea. We'll also 'swim' north Pacific Beach to the point.

As is our tradition, we're going to kick off the beach season by spending four nights at the Beach Shack... and by not leaving Missile Beach during the holiday weekend proper: Saturday-Monday. This will give as plenty of time to (a) walk the Missile Beach Boardwalk, (b) explore all five bayside points, (c) walk the north jetty, (d) finally take Sabo to the Single Fin bar&grill, (e) multiple sessions of Midnight Missile Recognizance... if you know what I mean.

Finally, early Tuesday morning, Sabo & me are going to Marina Village, then Ocean Beach. There, right on the OB Pier, an official announcement will be made, proclaiming the next great Sabo Quest !!!1! Then we'll 'swim' to Dog Beach before 9am. Where, if the tides, and the sandbar, and the life preserver, and Sabo's enthusiasm level, are all just right... we might do some real actual swimming.
