What are the origins of Sabo's name?

My parents had a pooch named Sabaka which was Russian slang for dog I believe. I'm having a very dog remembering afternoon lol, better than football tho

I was out & about today, and ended up right down the street from the Lucky Lady. So, I go on in for lunch. It turned out the kitchen & bar were closed this afternoon, but Stan bought the house pizza. So that worked out OK... well, except for the losing.

I hadn't been in during the day for a couple years now, but it was just like old times. The same regs were still there. I used to be a reg, so everyone asked where I'd been. I said I got a dog. Stan, who was sitting in the #9 seat, took some interest and asked me: "what kind?". I told him about Sabo. He said he had a Labradoodle. Right about then, the #1 seat opened up for me, so I walked around the table to my seat... and sure enough, Stan did have a Labradoodle. It was sitting right there next to the table. Real nice doggie too.

So... two dates in a row there's been a (non-service) dog in the cardroom. I have no idea why the dude up in Marina was carrying around a dog. However, I do know the Stan in question @Lucky Lady is the owner. FYI: One thing that has changed in the last few years is the blinds in the $3,6 Limit Hold'em game are now $2,3 and Stan is now dropping $5.

Sabo's name has two sources. First, his name is a corruption of 'Sebastian'. He's named in honor of the man who brought the last dog, Cinnamon Stick, into our lives: my friend and the late actor Sebastian Massa. Second, Sabo is named in honor of Sabo-tabby. Sabo-tabby is Ralph Champlin's famous 100+ year old cartoon cat, and the official mascot of my union, the IWW. Sabo is the live-action canine equivalent, and also the very unofficial mascot of the union. FYI: 'Sabo' is short for 'sabotage'.

Maybe you should consider asking one of your dog owning friends if you could be their dog's God-Uncle... like I was for The Missile, and my brotherman B is for Sabo. Sure, you'd be taking on a potential responsibility: taking your dog in if your friend couldn't physically care for them, and helping out with your dog's bills if your friend got into in a really bad financial bind. But you'd actually be able say you have a dog then... because you really would. And... there are perks: you'd get first dibs dog sitting, play dates, etc.

+/- ^{Delta from previous week.} In an upset, the forces of absurdity lost last weekend. Sabo's Aztecs (9-3, 8-0 in conference) will host Air Force (8-4, 6-2) at the Q in their conference championship game.

A tough Nevada team played SDSU even almost to halftime. However, after that the SDSU defense dominated the game, and Sabo's Aztecs went on to another impressive win. At the same time, over in Albuquerque, New Mexico piled up a big early lead against Air Force. The Lobo's held on the win 47-35. Then we had the *exciting* part (read sarcastically). The waiting for those damn computers to whirl, gig, and spit out their spam... which, because computers are so damn fast, takes until the next day. And... in the end all those stinking piles of flip-flops did a flip-flop and ranked SDSU ahead of Air Force. The only non-absurd result possible from an absurd process.

This looks to be a really good game. Not all the news coming out of the Nevada game for Sabo's Aztecs was positive, however. M.Smith, the grad student starting QB, injured his knee and is out for the year. SDSU is -200 (-4 pts).

Well, I did spend some time on the name. Also, I picked the name out a while before I got around to picking a dog that matched. Although I do think that certain aspects of Sabo's personality, which I couldn't know of when I rescued him, fit the name quite well.

For a long time the 'working name' for the next dog was "Tres" (Español for three). This would have led to a 'call name' of "Tracy". Similarly, if The Missile had been my third dog, the 'working name' for the next dog would have been "Quatro". That name would have led to a 'call name' of "Q"... short for BBQ

This was a good question because it kinda threw me for a loop. It may sound a little strange, especially considering the sports content ITT... but I don't really have a favorite player. Likewise, now that I've thought about it (which I never had before, hence the loop throwing)... I guess I don't really have favorite fictional dog or cat characters either.


The only animated cartoon I've ever been into is The Simpsons, so I guess Santa's Little Helper, and Snowball (I,II,III, etc) would be the default answer. I was never really into to Snoopy, or any other non-animated cartoon pets. I also can't think of any live-action, or written, stories where a pet was both a significant character and a favorite of mine. When I thought of myths in a more literally sense, I only came up with poor old Argo (above).


Two major caveats here: As for a favorite player, I wouldn't consider an answer of T.Gwynn Sr to be responsive. As Mr.Padre, Mr.Aztec, and Mr. San Diego sports, he's in a totally different category than "a player". There is always an implicit "Besides T.G.Sr," preceding that question. Second, obviously Sabo-tabby is my favorite cartoon pet... I named my dog after her, for goodness sake. However Sabo-tabby, just like Argo, aren't really characters... they're symbols. Symbols of faith, and industrial sabotage, respectively.

I think its cool you don't have favorites, shows a more mature understanding imo. Tony Gwyn is was an awesome ball player and pretty cool human being too. Going simpson I'd have to go with itchy and scratchy cat>>>>domesticated ones.

Good catch. Yeah I'd guess, over the decades, that Itchy & Scratchy have been more significant characters. I didn't even take these 'meta'-dog & cat into my considerations.


Yeah, cats suck IRL... otherwise I would have just got a black cat and named her "Sabo-tabby II".

Another real life dog of note was Owney the RPO dog. This stray puppy was initially adopted by mail workers in Albany, NY. Over the next ten years he constantly travelled the mail trains all over the US, and eventually on mail ships around the world... collecting special tags everywhere he went. Today he's the subject of several books & songs, is the mascot of the USPS, and his carcass was stuffed and is on display at The Smithsonian.

So... Im sure my (perhaps five) readers are wondering... what's Sabo been up to lately? Well, nothing that quite reached Sabo Big Weekend™ critical mass. However, it's still 2015: The Year of Sabo, so rest assured he's been keeping busy.

A week ago Tuesday, Sabo's God-Uncle B was in town, and stopped by to visit his doggie. He had just returned from an extended business trio overseas, and this was the longest they've ever been apart. It sure is good seeing that Sabo give his 'big greeting', and his love... gotta that Sabo !!!1!

We went for a hike down on the Embarcadero. Sabo checked out the Broadway Pier, and the G Street Mole with the talking Bob Hope statue, which were closed off for construction last time we were down here. This as also a test of my slowly better feeling left ankle... which although still stiff, held up just fine. We also went to Sabo's favorite restaurant: Bull's BBQ, where every dog gets a bone. Sabo got three in fact, two with some meat still on from his God-Uncle's plate. That's what I call a happy dog !!!1!

So, Sabo and me are back working on the Tri-Canyon project. Thursday, Monday, and today we took hikes furthering that project. All three of these days we ended up at the Coronado Brewing Co factory. This is still dog friendly, although they have taken over the building next door, and rumer is they are going to open a kitchen at the factory, closing out the dogs. We'll see. Saturday, Sabo & me had a little sports 'house divided' yapping kerfuffle, which I'll explain in due course. I settled it with the magic numbers: 35-2-7. We also ended up down at the Beach Shack, and got some late-night scofflaws in, on a few of the days in between.

So... no SBW™... but Sabo's been keeping busy having fun, none-the-less. Gotta that Sabo-doggy !!!1!

In fact, as hard as it may be to believe here in 2015: the Year of Sabo, we haven't had a Sabo Big Weekend™ since the spring equinox. That's not to say Sabo hasn't been out-and-about. In fact, quite the contrary.

Despite rain on Friday, just before we set out to Tecolote Canyon, and rain on Sunday overnight, we've been making big progress on Sabo's Complete Train Guide. In fact, so much so that I got a burr up my butt. Literally. We were out hiking the canyon on Tuesday, and Sabo stepped on a loose piece of prickley cactus. My little boy was walking around hurting. So I called him over, stooped down, and pulled that chunk of loose cactus out of his pads. In the process, I butt-planted myself about 10x worse. Ouch. Needless to say, I did a 'surfer change' when we got back to the car. I still gotta buncha prickleyers working out. Gotta that Sabo-doggy !!!1!

So here's our plan...

• Friday, after 12 Noon: Since we aren't going to finish the Sabo's Complete Trail Guide before rolling it over until a second winter, we might as well jump on the 'Mission-Creep' bandwagon, and expand the scope once again. FYI: we would have completed the project if it had stayed at just being the Tri-Canyon parks. Now the project is: visit all parks, hike all trails in all canyons, and connect them all together, between I-805, SR-163, I-8 & I-5. So... we'll take a hike along the San Diego River, which is now in the new extended project region.
  
  
• Saturday: Sabo's got his IWW meeting to attend. We're meeting on Saturday this month, because...
  
  
• Sunday: I'm going to see my Chargers. Sabo gets to spend the day helping Grandpa in the Sabotat.
  
  
• Monday, The Winter Solstice: In what's becoming a tradition on the solstices, Sabo and me are going to revisit Capehart Dog Park, and hike Mt. Soledad. Afterwards, we are going to spend the night at the Beach Shack.
  
  
• Tuesday, before 12 Noon: Sabo & me are going to visit, on leash before 9am, Santa Clara, El Carmel, Bahia, Mariners, & San Diego (aka Mission) points along the bayside down along Missile Beach. Then we're going to have a late breakfast at the Single Fin, which is a bar & grill that a few incarnations ago, knew The Missile well.

Yeah, it's the most wonderful time of the year if you're ESPN. They own 13 bowls outright, and including the playoffs will broadcast 38 of the 41 games on ESPN/ESPN2/ABC. Two of the games are on CBS/CBSSN, while the sad-sack Arizona bowl won't be on tv at all (it will stream at campusinsiders.com however).

Once again we have a Miami Beach Bowl which isn't in Miami Beach, a Las Vegas bowl which isn't in Las Vegas, a Sun Bowl which isn't on the sun, a Cotton Bowl which isn't played in the Cotton Bowl... but there's another bowl played in the Cotton Bowl which isn't the Cotton Bowl. Two teams this year are bowling on their home lanes: New Mexico & Navy.

Other items of interest this year: well we've finally reached the situation where there are too many bowl games. Historically, less than a handful of teams have made it to a bowl with a losing record. In each case, the teams became bowl eligible by winning their conference or division. This year there simply weren't enough bowl eligible teams to fill up all the bowls. So, Nebraska, Minnesota, and San Jose State get to go bowling anyways... with 5-7 records. One of those "too many" bowls is the brand new Arizona Bowl in Tucson. Not only did they fail to get a tv contract, they also selected a matchup of Nevada -vs- (underrated) Colorado State (from Ft. Collins). Yep... two Mountain West teams. Pathic. And... this is the year the FBS starts their quest to redefine New Year's Eve as the biggest of college football days, despite misgivings from their broadcast partner ESPN.


I listed the remaining Charger games as Bowl games below. I'm not trying to 'dis' my Chargers by implying they're a college level team. Not that the team doesn't stink. It's because at this late stage of this bizarre & annoying season of eviscerated urgency, these games really have the feel of being some kinda twisted bowls.

First up is the "Fish Bowl" -vs- the Dolphins. This could be the last home Charger game ever. As I blogged earlier, I got tickets for this game. I've invited the biggest "Bolt Head" I know, my brotherman L. I've heard the possible penultimate home game, two weeks ago -vs- the Broncos, got ugly at the Q. Kinda like a Rocky Mountain Low version of the Hooligan Bowl. But, as AFAIK nobody in San Diego gives a crap about the Dolphins. Anyway, we're going to start early, trolley-bar-hop our way to the Q, stay in the proper upbeat frame of mind... and have an epic time.

As for the game itself: well, my Chargers have finally finished their long 17-game Virtual Exhibition schedule. They recorded wins against the Cowboys, @Cardinals, Lions, Browns, and on November 29th @Jaguars 31-25. They lost to the Seahawks, @49ers, @Bengals, @Vikings, Steelers, @Packers, Raiders, @Ravans, Bears, and two weeks ago at the Q to the Broncos 3-17. They also lost twice to the Chiefs: 3-33 at the Q on November 22nd, and 3-10 at Arrowhead last Sunday (in perhaps the last morning start time ever). Overall, during the last four weeks, besides getting mathematically eliminated... the wheels have basically fallen off. But, that's what's so great about the (virtual) exhibition season... that 5-12 record is washed away, and they start the (virtual) regular season fresh at 0-0.

As for the Dolphins, well they got mathematically eliminated the day after the Chargers, losing to the Giants on MNF. They're a stinky team in disarray also. IMO the Chargers have more talent, we're playing these fish at the Q, and I gotta believe the players wanna go out with a win. My Chargers are going to be dogs @Raiders, and big dogs @Broncos the final two games. This could be the last game they should, and might, win. The game's a pick'em. Yay Chargers !!!!1!

I ended up scuttling this whole expanded scope thingees. We'll get to hiking the San Diego River, and down Roselle Canyon to Sorrento Valley, which I inadvertently also included in this expanded scope too. But we've been working on this expanding Tri-Canyon project for a year now, it's miles and miles across town from the Sabotat, and there are other regions of the county I'd like to explore with Sabo.

So we had a good afternoon of hiking in Tecolote Canyon instead.

This all happened as planned. It's always nice to see Sabo at our union meetings. He can be kinda shy in a group of strangers. But, he's known all our union brothers for a while now... and just goes around getting the love. Including shamelessly nose-nudging his favorite, our union brother P.

It rained this morning, all day in fact. I wasn't fit out for man or beast on the bayside, or on a bar & grill's patio either. So this was all rained out. OK, so maybe it wasn't the biggest of Sabo Big Weekend™. But we did get a coupla good hike days in, and Savo got to his IWW meeting. Sabo had a blast... he's a 'go dog', afterall.

Bottom line: chalk up another successful Sabo Big Weekend™ !!!1!

For Sabo & my teams, this is the big week for bowl games. Amazingly, I attended the prior game of a team in all three games. First up is the Hawaii Bowl: Sabo's Aztecs -vs- University of Cincinnati Bearcats. No, I didn't go to Greenville NC last month to see the Bearcats beat East Carolina 19-16.

I went to the Mountain West Championship game at the Q... on $10 scalped free student tickets. Sabo was quite disappointed he couldn't go too. Unfortunately, it was pointed out that I could have taken Sabo to see his Aztecs this year. We could have 'knotholed' the SDSU @Cal game from Tightwad Hill above Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. I replied that SDSU isn't scheduled to play there again, and certainly won't in the Sabo era. That really got Sabo yapping... he wasn't a happy dog. As I blogged, I had to remind him of the score to hush him up. I left the game on the radio for Sabo.

When I got back from the game, all was forgiven, and I got the 'big greeting'. It was just that good of an Aztec victory. This was the Aztec's second championship during Sabo's lifetime, as they shared the 2012 MW championship with Boise State and Fresno State. However, the last time they won their conference outright was the WAC way back in 1986.

Redshirt freshman C.Chapman, starting at QB in place of injured grad student M.Smith, was the game MVP. He also has a cute, but surely jail-bait, younger sister who paraded around the stadium holding up a sign to that effect. You won't see that at an NFL game. A very good Air Force team scored first, and let through most of the game. However, it was always close. SDSU finally went ahead midway through the fourth quarter. Then the R.Long coached defense won the game, stopping Air Force's last two drives. Great game !!!1!

This is Sabo's Aztecs second trip to the islands this year. They beat Hawaii 28-14 back in week #5 here in Aloha Stadium. The Aztecs (10-3) are, of course, Mountain West Conference champions. Cincinnati (7-5) finished third in the American Athletic Conference east division. The Bearcats lead the series, having won the only prior meeting 52-23 back on 2007-9-29 at the Q. The Aztecs are -125 (-2 pts). Go Aztecs !!!1!


Also on Xmas eve, at the same time as the Hawaii Bowl in fact, my Chargers will be playing the hated @Raiders in the "Rivalry" Bowl. Sure, Denver has always been in our division, and Kansas City has been in our division for 11 more years than Oakland, heck even Seattle was in our division more consecutive years... but there's something about the Raiders, in particular the Oakland Raiders, which makes those of us who bleed Powder Blue see red when confronted with Raider's black. It's not just those big ugly dudes who like to wear makeup and play dress-up at the stadiums... welcome to the Hater Nation.

If this game hadn't been on Xmas eve, and especially if it had been the last game of the season, instead of the second to last... I was really thinking of going. The Raiders can't give away their tickets, I'm sure I coulda found a cheap Sunday turnaround, and O.Co was built right at the airport. Funny... I would go to this game, but I won't go to the Hooligan Bowl.

My brotherman L & me decided that if it really was the end of 49 years at the Q, we should do things old-school. So none of this new-fangled taking the trolley. Instead we rolled early in the morning, posted up in 'The Section' -- J3, and enjoyed a classic San Diego style tailgate. Which we gotta do better than any other pro team, flat out. Of course, we have the perfect venue... the giant parking lot at the Q.

To me, there were a surprising amount of peeps walking around with Dolphins gear. But, as far as I saw, they treated our situation here with respect, and were in turn treated with respect. I didn't notice anything close to any hooliganism. They were also a decided minority... little sprinklings of our teal colored guests, in a rocking and rolling sea of Chargers blue. Of course, after the game started, they had nothing to yell about. My Chargers thoroughly trounced the Dolphins, behind D.Woodhead's four TDs. The final was 30-14, but it wasn't that close.

It was an emotional day all around at the Q. From long before the game, until long after the game was over, it felt just like a playoff game. Us 'bolt heads' were emotional. The players seemed even more emotional than us, and it sure seemed to show in their play. Coach McCoy, who was probably coaching his last home game regardless, showed a lotta class giving P.Rivers, A.Gates, and M.Floyd curtain calls during the 'victory' plays. Lots of the old time staff at the Q were definitely the most emotional.

Bottom line, us San Diegans stayed classy, right to what might have been the very end. We packed our house, the historic Q, and rocked our Chargers to victory. We did it right... like we always do. Now, let's see if this inherited billionaire family from Stockton can show a little class... just once in their worthless existence.

The Raiders (6-8) got eliminated just a week after my Chargers, losing to the Packers last week. Both teams got nothing to play for. If we could magically swap the score of the Hooligan Bowl, both teams would have identical 5-9 records. There's not that much difference between these teams... they both stink. My Chargers need to worry about this being a 'trap' game, as it might well be the last Raiders game in Oakland. Hopefully the memories of the embarrassing pounding, with the misleading 29-37 final, they received in the Hooligan Bowl will guard against that. But... if they play like they did against the Dolphins, they should whip the hated Raiders. The Chargers are +210 (+5½ pts). Go Stay Chargers !!!1!


Ironically, Sabo was hoping his Aztecs went to this bowl. He should have realized they'd pick Air Force (8-5), especially a Falcon team that won the MW Mountain division, before losing to Sabo's Aztec's in the conference championship three weeks ago.

As for my Golden Bears (7-5)... they clinched a winning record a month ago, beating Arizona State 48-46 in a thrilling game. This game was on the same time as the still important Nevada @SDSU game, so I had that on the main tv with the sound for Sabo... but I ended up paying more attention to the Cal game. Cal fell behind early 3-24, and were losing 10-27 at the half. To start the second half, Cal & the Sun Devils exchanged punts. Then all hell broke loose.

Every single possession the rest of the game resulted in a score. J.Goff, Cal's stud QB, who is surely declaring for the NFL after this bowl game, had 525 passing yards, and five TDs. But you could say the Cal defense won this game, in a sense... they held Arizona State to four straight field goals before giving up the go ahead TD with 2:35 to go. OTOH, Arizona State's defense gave up five straight TDs before giving up the game winning field goal with four seconds left.

I gotta figure with a name of 'Armed Forces' this bowl will have a Falcon's crowd. Cal leads the series 6-2, including winning the most recent meeting 42-36, right here also at the Armed Forces Bowl, back on New Years Eve 2007. Cal is -270 (-7 pts). Go Bears !!!1!

It's the end of 2015: The Year of Sabo, we're going to break tradition and start in the morning. The Wiener-Nationals is the finals of a national series of dachshund races sponsored by Der Wienerschnitzel. They won't let Sabo enter... because he'd win. The parade attracts 100k they say. I've never been to either. This is all buildup to the Holiday Bowl at the Q (USC vs Univ Wisconsin Badgers). I'm going to disguise Sabo as a badger, and sneak him in as the mascot.

Just like last New Years Eve, I'm taking Sabo to the vet. He really likes going to the vet. He'll get that Kennel Cough shot he doesn't really need (for the cruise), and I got an email from his vet regarding another shot. We'll ring the year in doing the Garnet Shuffle down the famous/infamous Pacific Beach bar district.

A Polar Bear Challenge is taking an ocean dip to start the new year, preferably skinny-dipping. Sabo's going to sponsor his own event this year... after they pour us out of the bars, at 2 am, right on the beach in Pacific Beach. After we've slept it all off at the Beach Shack, we'll take the Walk of Shame (2~3 miles) up the Pacific Beach boardwalk back to PB bar district and the car.

Stevenson, Einstein, and Kearney canyons are tributary to Rose, San Clemente, and Tecolote creeks, situated behind the campuses of Horizon Christian Academy (originally Stevenson ES), Creative Arts MS (originally Einstein JHS), and Kearney HS, respectively. The academic connection is symbolic of 2016, as will soon be announced. The three canyon connection is a consequence of our renewed push to get Sabo's Complete Trail Guide to the Tri-Canyon Parks completed before the end January. We started 2015-2-1.

Santa was very good to Sabo... via my brotherman D in Lake Havasu. We'll be spending part of the gift card he send Sabo next Monday. Also, the Petco store will be site of this mysterious major announcement regarding Sabo & the future.

Since none of Sabo & my teams made their respective playoffs, our college teams have won their bowl games, and my Chargers lost the "Rivalry Bowl"... we're down to our last game of the season. That's the "Charger Bowl": Chargers (1-1*) @Broncos (11-4) this Sunday. The stakes couldn't be higher: my Chargers win, and the team lives (hopefully)... they lose and the team dies (aka moves to LA, which *seems* likely, regardless).

With the 20-23 OT loss in the "Rivalry Bowl", add this disappointing and cruel season to the annuls of infamy: 1963, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2010... the years we got swept by Oakland. The Chargers thoroughly dominated the game, and the Raiders players (and by all reports the fans) didn't have the "magic" we all had the prior Sunday at the Q. But as usual in this rivalry, the Raiders got called for a ton of penalties, but somehow got the lucky breaks just when they needed them... and pulled another win out of their "black hole".

I can't believe the NFL will scuttle what is easily one of their top-five rivalries... because if both teams share a stadium in LA, and with one team moved to the NFC, that's exactly what they would be doing. Well, we'll see about that. There's one thing I can always hold certain: I'll always be a Raiders Hater !!!1!

So far, I've predicted that the NFL would shamelessly string us along through the regular season (correct), my Chargers would not make the playoffs (correct), the 17-game virtual exhibition season (correct decision), my Chargers would whip the Dolphins in the "Fish Bowl" (correct), and my Chargers would whip the Raiders in the "Rivalry Bowl" (wrong in OT). I'm going to go out making some even bolder predictions: since it *seems*, win-or-lose, my team will leave me... the "Charger Bowl" will go to OT also, and then end in a tie. This won't be the last San Diego Chargers game. And... the NFL will shamelessly string us along for another season.

Unfortunately, unlike the Dolphins & Raiders, the Broncos still have something to play for. They're in the playoffs, but will be playing for home field, or possibly a bye. My Chargers are 6-9 @Sports Authority stadium, including a playoff loss two seasons ago. The Chargers are +375 (+9½ pts). Go Stay Chargers !!!1!

With Sabo on the DL, I was forced to entertain myself yesterday. For deep symbolic reasons, I decided to watch the first half of the afternoon games at the Lafayette Hotel, and have a late lunch during the second half at the last Pernicano's pizza in Pacific Beach. Good Nurse Sabo will be along shortly to blog about Sabo. I might never deign to blog about the above mentioned symbolism... but those who know, know. It turns out that Pernicano's doesn't open until 5pm, so I watched the second half at the West End.

So... the question was: where to watch the morning games. Palomar card club is just down the street from the Lafayette hotel. I hadn't been there in about two and a half years, but I used to be a reg. So I figured I'd do the old Palomar 9am opening routine. I even went to Gilly's, which is the local dive bar that opens at 7am, for a pregame beer.

Imagine my surprise when I rolled up the hill, and the card room was closed up tight. I missed the news last month, but both Palomar, and the brand new Seven Mile card room in Chula Vista, were raided and shut down for alleged money laundering. According to this post over in B&M, Seven Mile, which I've yet to play at, has reopened. OTOH Palomar hasn't, and rumor is they may never reopen. Palomar's gaming license is grandfathered, so if they are indeed closed, there won't be a replacement.

So... I cruised up The Boulevard a few miles to Lucky Lady. Since I last played no-limit there, they've raised the max buy-in for their 2,3 game to $500.

After our visit to Capehart dog park, near sunset, when dogs are OK on the beach, I drove Sabo to Law St Park. Officially Palisades Park, this is a nice small park on the bluff above the beach. After checking out the park, we walked the beach, on leash, south to Garnet Av. From there, we headed inland, and did the infamous Garnet Shuffle... barhopping the Pacific Beach bar district.

It's way too crazy in the bars later on NYE to be having dogs in. So we retired to a house party in Pacific Beach... ironically enough, mainly attended by peeps who live miles and miles across town in the Sabo'hood. At the 'ball drop', somewhere off in the distance, people were setting off noise makers.

Sabo got up, took a look around (for his Uncle Grandpa, I'm sure), and then proceeded to cower in fear under the furniture. After the noises stopped, and after another while, he cautiously crawled into my lap, which he very rarely does. Sabo really don't like those kinda noises. Gotta and comfort that Sabo doggy !!!1!

After the bars had closed we returned to the beach for Sabo's Polar Bear Challenge... which Sabo successfully completed, skinning-dipping and scofflawing all the way to Missile Beach and the Beach Shack. Later that first morning of 2016, after the sun had risen, we did the Walk of Shame up the Pacific Beach boardwalk back to Law St & the car, revisited Carehart, and then returned to the Sabotat.

I was just pulling Sabo's tail about attending the Holiday Bowl earlier in the week. However, the Indiana fans I talked to really liked the idea of disguising him as a badger. It turns out the Wiener-National finals are just that, one very quick race... blink and you missed it. Sabo saw the race from where we posted up on the grass in the CAC Waterfront Park. Sabo's been to this park before, as we attended it's grand opening back on 2014-5-10.

The Holiday Bowl parade started directly after the wiener-dog race. They say it attracts 100k, and is the 'largest' balloon parade. The 100k claim was bogus, and I was skeptical of the 'largest' claim, as they didn't have the largest of balloons. However, they clarified that it was the largest balloon parade measured by cubic feet of inflation gas used... which seemed reasonable, as they had a ton of different balloons.

Sabo really enjoyed the parade... even more than he enjoys most events. He was rolling around on the grass, etc, with the biggest smile on his face. He was especially popular with the other parade viewers, particularly it seemed from the 20-something foreign tourists. That Sabo doggy is one sharp looking canine !!!1!

Against tradition, we moved the conclusion of this SBW™ to the PM. The reason being is that's when Sabo's personal trainer C works at Petco. After consulting with C, who is BTW one of Sabo's favorites, and who he was especially happy to see... a major press conference was held at the store to finally announce what 2016, the year after 2015: The Year of Sabo, is going to be. Behold:


So... all-in-all it was a good SBW™. Sabo was especially happy a few times... and that's saying a lot, as he's a pretty happy dog in general. However, not everything went Sabo's way this week. We had some unexpected at the vet on New Years Eve. The hikes and dog park visits on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th were cancelled, as Sabo was on the disabled list. Also, Sabo got a 'trick' at Petco on Monday, instead of any treats. Good Nurse Sabo will be along shortly to blog this news.

Well, it turns out I was mistaken about the shots. On NYE 2014 Sabo got shots for Rabies, Parvo & DHP, which are all good for three years, and Pyrantel which is good for a year. So, I took Sabo in on NYE 2015 to get a Pyrantel shot, as well as the optional Kennel Cough (aka Bordatella) treatment.

Now, so far at least, Sabo has really liked going to the vet. And somewhat surprisingly, he has had no problems being picked up and handled, etc. by the staff. What wasn't surprising is that Sabo doesn't like getting the nasal Kennel Cough treatment. The previous time he had gotten it, the vet had me hold him... and he still squirmed so much she said next time he'll get the shot. This time the vet techs took him in the back. Sure enough, they tried the nasal treatment again, and there was a kerfuffle in the back. It turned out to be Sabo. He ended up getting the shot this time.

What was surprising, was they brought him out with the cutest little bright pink muzzle on... which I'm going to guess was a new experience for Sabo. Anyways, they brought him out, and he just melted into my side. The not always cuddly dog needed immediate cuddling. That and he had gained almost two pounds last year, coming in at 14.8 lbs.

Saturday the 2nd, I awoke to a Sabo with a broken, bent backwards, and dangling left front dewclaw. This whole dewclaw thing got confusing, so I'll review. Sabo now, like most all dogs, has 18 claws. Each paw has four front claws in a 1-2-1 pattern, and he has two front dewclaws. These are on the inside of the paws, similarly placed as a human thumb.

When I got Sabo, he had 20 claws. He also had single dewclaws on both back legs. Front dewclaws are fully attached and usable claws. On most all dogs that get them, rear dewclaws aren't attached to any bones, they are just loosely attached to the skin... and they serve absolutely no purpose. Back in the day, at least, these rear dewclaws were removed at birth. If Flower or The Missile ever had any, they were removed then.

Saturday, Sabo was getting around fine, and at full speed... but I could tell it was irritating him, as he'd hold up that paw when standing, and slightly limp at bit when first standing up after a nap. So... I put him on the DL for a coupla days, to see if Good Nurse Sabo could take care of the problem. I figured if it still was dangling on Monday morning, I'd take him to the groomers, and if necessary back to the vet.

Well, it was still dangling on Monday morning. But as I blogged above, we postponed our Petco trip until Monday afternoon. So I take Sabo in Monday afternoon to the groomers... and it seemed he had zero dewclaws !!!1!

It turns out that later Monday morning, Good Nurse Sabo had cleared out the broken left front dewclaw. In addition, it turns out that his right front dewclaw had broken off too. That, however, was a clean break which didn't bother him. The groomers showed me the little pink nubs of the new front dewclaws, and said the two breaks were out of the skin, and the new claws were coming in just fine. The worthless rear dewclaws had both indeed disappeared.

When I explained how Sabo flies up and down the terraces in back, the groomers explained that the broken dewclaws were very consistent with a bad landing on cinder blocks, and Sabo had probably broken and removed the worthless rear dewclaws, which don't grow back, in similar fashion over the last ~two years.

So Sabo was OK. But since I was there, and had that gift card my brotherman D sent us from Havasu, I 'treated' Sabo to a spa day anyways. I had his 16 remaining claws grinded, the hair between his pads trimmed, and he got a bath. Gotta that Sabo doggy, he's a good guy !!!1!

Tomorrow is Flower Remembrance Day. So I'd thought we should use a Flower related theme for this Sabo Big Weekend™, the first of 2016: The Year of New Tricks. The plan is each day I'm going to take Sabo to visit one of Flower's four favorite places. Of course, as it's a SBW™, there is lots of other fun in store too. This is our agenda:

• Friday, 2pm: Sabo starts Second Grade @Petco !!!1!
• Later: We visit the Great-Grandparents house (Flowers #2 favorite place).
• Saturday, night: Sleepover in the Sabotat (#1).
• Sunday, 12:30pm: Sabo's regular IWW meeting.
• Later: Sabo swims at OTL island (#3).
• Monday, morning: We hike Einstein Canyon, part of San Clemente Canyon (#4).

Our recent birthday boy... oh yeah, I should blog Sabo's birthday yesterday too. Well, it was a pretty good day for Sabo. We started off visiting the Sabo'hood park with the dog run, which we hardly ever do anymore, so Sabo liked that. After lunch, we went to Petsmart for some birthday bling (we tried Petco last year, with no luck). Sabo also got a bag of treats, and bag of dog rocks. And... we finished with an extended visit to Dog Beach.

Sabo got boned three times yesterday. I had dined a few days early at a restaurant that was selling a bag of bones for $1, proceeds going to the Humane Society. Sabo got one out of that bag just after midnight. Of course, we had lunch at Sabo's favorite: Bull's BBQ... where since he was the birthday boy, he got a special bone with some meat on it. And I gave him another bone out of that bag before the midnight.

Since this birthday is actually the 2nd-anny of 'Artie' being sent to doggy prison... I think he's done pretty good for himself the last two years. Gotta that Sabo doggy, he's a good guy !!!1!

I went by that house several years ago now, it, and most of the neighborhood had changed pretty much beyond recognition. The views from the houses at the bottom of the street would have been pretty prime, but from the actual house itself there wouldn't have been much of a view, especially if it is single story.

In honor of Flower Remembrance Day, the nominal anniversary of when we sent her onward, the theme of this Sabo Big Weekend™ was visiting Flower's favorite places. Which were...

1. The Sabotat: Long before it was Sabo's Sabotat, it was Flower's Yard. Flower was a yard dog. She was allowed in the living room (and the TV room, after it was added), only as long as someone was using them. Overnight, and when nobody was home, Flower was outside. Consequently, some of my fondest Flower memories were when us kids would sleep overnight in her domain... on backyard sleepouts.
   
   However... those were also summer memories. It's cold out now, and Sabo would probably just go inside where it's warmer and sleep. So, I decided to save this nostalgia for Flower's birthday instead.
   
   
2. The Great-Grandparent's House: This is the second time I've taken Sabo by here. As I blogged above, Flower lived with the Great-Grandparents here for two years, when she was 2-4, while Grandpa (& the rest of us) got transferred to the Quincy, MA boat yards. This time, nobody was home. So, I let Sabo off leash in the fenced front yard, while I sat awhile on the front porch steps.

   We went by there last week, and from the street the house looks the same as the Google Maps street view below... except it had been painted (the same color), and the house number had been added in large black letters. Let's test your memory here... besides the two tall hedges on each side of the front steps, what do you find changed in front? We also viewed the back of the lot, from a place you can view the back of the lot... however we couldn't get there anymore. Considering what can be seen from the satellite images, what do you find changed in back? How has the end of the street, and the 'hood in general, besides the racial mix, changed?
   
   
3. OTL Island. Flower didn't normally get to go places like Sabo or The Missile. However, she did get to go, if not regular, at least fairly often to the beach or the canyons. She loved going, and unlike the aforementioned little dogs, loved hanging her head out the car window and drooling. She loved Dog Beach, but she didn't like the waves. That's why OTL Island was her favorite... no leash, all beach, and no waves.
   
   She'd jump right in that water, just like The Missile would later. However, Sabo didn't go in the water at all when we went last week. Oh well... can't blame him, neither did I. The reason we didn't go in the water ties into...
   
   
4. Einstein Canyon: This is a side canyon off of San Clemente Canyon. Flower went to all the canyons, at least a time or two. But a family favorite was always San Clemente Canyon. Perhaps, as we live miles and miles across town, it was because it has parking and restrooms right on the canyon floor. Naw... actually, it's a real nice canyon, perhaps the best in the urban core. FWIW, this side canyon trail is officially called Kroc Trail, and is named for the deceased owner of McDonald's. What next ??

What the above two items have in common is they relate to Sabo's Complete Trail Guide to the Tri-Canyon Parks, which we are frantically trying to complete this month. Which, alas, might not be possible... as I'll explain shortly. But first, I gotta few blogs about how Sabo's first day of second grade went in particular, and how 2016: The Year of New Tricks is going in general.

So, add up all the above, throw in Sabo's big monthly IWW meeting (it's so much fun to see him with a group of people he ain't shy around), and all this frantic hiking in the tri-canyons... I'd say it was a pretty damn good SBW™ indeed !!!1!

Well, with the Patriots loss yesterday, Sabo went a pathetic 0-6 in his preseason football picks (below). OTOH I went 6-3, including double checks for successfully picking Alabama to win the FBS championship game preseason.

Since I retain in-house yapping rights ever since the SDSU-Cal game, you gotta believe Sabo's been hearing a lot of taunting regarding his football 0-fer. In fact, just as I was typing this up... he must have heard enough, as he got up and went to go flake outside and bake in the morning sun. But, that Sabo's a good guy. So, to give him a chance to get off that zero, we're both going to pick the Super Bowl... again. Sabo's pick is +175 (+4½ pts, odds from 5dimes.eu).

We had our second 'Broken Arrow' today... although thankfully both were brief enough that I'm not sure they fully warrant the name. However, if heart-dropping alone counts... these two count.

Anyways, I came down with the flu Tuesday morning, and have been basically isolating myself in the Sabo room since, to avoid infecting the rest of the household. Luckily, I have Good Nurse Sabo to look after me. Today, I awoke from a nap around 4pm. Both gates to the Sabotat were hanging wide open... and Sabo had gone missing. Repeated calls of "Sabo Come Here!" got no response.

By 4:35, I was starting to really worry, and decided it was time to take a drive around the nearby streets, yelling "Sabo Come Here!" out the car window. I figured I'd try calling "Sabo Come Here!" out front one more time before starting out. Sure enough, about two blocks away I heard a very faint and distant "jingle-jangle'. Which quickly got louder, as Sabo was going as fast as I've ever seen him go.

I seem to remember the house being blue. Yes there were two trees at the front on either side of the stairs, and on the left hand side there was a pepper tree with draping branches. But I hadn't been there since 1983 and went back in 2001 I think. I just thought that many houses in the neighborhood had gone multiple story, but I could be wrong. It has been a long time. I went with Mom and I remembered the house number, but she didn't. In the back, and I'm not sure when this memory was from there was a bouganvilla bush which grandma loved and a hydrangea as well I think. There was cacti around the fences and grandpa's shed. How much would those houses go for these days?

Sorry to hear about your broken arrow incident. Our cat went missing on Friday night, but it turned out she was in the house, hiding in a closet, but it was scarey all the same.
