De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Hi there!

The title tells about a longstanding issue, started to de-clutter and cleaning the house yet again yesterday, one hour a day.

Lately have been on H&F (https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/8...nover-1711406/), and getting those things in tolerable shape, this is my new-old project.

The thread in OOT is sleeping: https://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/3...house-1628300/, but this blog will not

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

So yesterday threw out magazines and papers. Today the same, and then old food, plus cleaned a bit in the kitchen.

I have a timer ringing after one hour.

Well I had cleared some stuff out but I ended up moving more stuff from the house to the garage and it's a nightmare again.

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

We decluttered 3 residents of the house off to assisted living or college; now we're working on the crap they left behind. Then we can work on our own stuff, including several filing cabinets full of papers. Then, we can declutter ourselves from the house, which is too big and therefore a huge physical and financial burden.

My wife has donated 4-5 boxes of books, and cleaned out the kids' rooms. Hmm, she's done a lot, what have I done lately? I cleaned out a medicine cabinet and a kitchen cabinet today. Most of my own stuff is in order I have some areas for improvement, such as the papers, the tool bench/area, my office, and the shed.

We are still paying $150/week for our cleaners, but hopefully we will reduce the frequency by half.

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

It is easier to just move. Only pack what you really want. Any boxes that were never unpacked during the last move get tossed.

Alternatively, the rule of "one thing enters only after one or two things have exited" works well. You want to buy a new magazine today? Well if you didn't get rid of at least one yesterday, then you aren't the sort of person who deserves a new magazine.

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Loden, looks you have things under some control!

Brian, have lived in this place since 2002, will probably not move out before needing greater assistance hopefully in at least three decades forward. We have the attic full, but at least got rid of the separate hired storages, they cost unbelievably much. Will try to apply the rule you gave Brian, but it will be more like getting rid of twenty for every one entering

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Moving every year or two definitely cuts down on crap. One thing that keeps me constantly trying to clear stuff out and donate is the thought of leaving too much stuff that my bf would have to deal with if I carked it. Statistically he will probably die before me as he is older but this still does motivate me.

Yet another magazine-newspaper day, that part looks better already. The vacuuming robot is finishing up.

I only buy magazines if I am flying. Using the library is a great way of cutting down on magazines and books etc. Keep going

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Thought I should provide some basic information. Me and my spouse are living in an apartment of about 70 square meters = 750 square feet. Our part of the attic is maybe eight square meters, depends on how you count, you can put quite a lot of stuff under the sloping roof. In the cellar there's maybe one square meter of space. This is what we have to work with.

Rexx, thanks. Will use the same philosophy here as in the gym: don't care what I do, but putting in one hour a day will mean results.

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Nice, the timer broke. You need more than that to deter plaaynde though, 3x20 minutes was what it became. Will buy two new timers tomorrow, and the one above finds its way to the metal trash. RIP, thanks, you served well.

Mostly chores today btw.

Re: De-cluttering and cleaning the house

Caught myself, please see previous post. De-cluttering is a mindset. My first impulse was to buy two timers for having one in reserve. But will buy just one, having one item less in the house, and if it fails I will just use another clock until buying a new timer. Our home doesn't have to be a storage.

You could also use a timer on your phone or pc. A lot of ovens have timers as well.

For flying, I pick a bunch of interesting threads, and click through the pages from last to first (or first unread), and then read them on the plane, clicking the back button to move forward. One thread per tab, close tab when done.

+1 on library books. You can download books from many libraries, so the book doesn't ever cross your threshold. Same with many magazines these days.

Thanks, but too late! Got a new mechanical one today. Must post a pic.

It seems the one hour a day will not be a problem. Now the magazine project is soon over, and every room is vacuumed. I can use the hour to gradually fix the small and a little larger things, and would say it will partly be a project for us both.

Good points. Just like in poker you need two things: in poker to win and win by not losing, and when cleaning to throw out and avoid getting things to throw!

I have found my stamina to do this de-cluttering and cleaning is much better than before when trying. Must be the workout.

Time for some pause music, this is a party!
