I may or may not be learning about wifi.
So, when I first set a camera up, it shows very good signal strength. Then it seems to degrade. I think I've finally figured it out. It seems that wifi routers work on two different speeds - 2.4gz and 5.0 gz.
Quote:
2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz: Which frequency should you choose? A 2.4 GHz connection travels farther at lower speeds, while 5 GHz frequencies provide faster speeds at shorter range. Your choice of 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz will depend on where and how you use your WiFi connection most.
My spectrum router, it seems, claims to be "smart" and changes frequencies on the fly. My camera does not like this AT ALL. In fact, it just goes offline. Apparently there are routers where you can pick the frequency (2.4, 5, or router makes the decision). No such luck with this one.
The spectrum guy came out and the first thing he said after I explained everything is "get a better router". Sure enough, I googled spectrum router performance and it came back "mediocre". Ha.
So, I bought a mesh system that is supposed to work for a 3,000 sq. ft. house (mine is just north of half of that). I did a lot of research and this particular one by far got the best marks from folks that bought different systems.
I'll be setting it up this weekend, which will require a ton of work for every device that is connected. Fingers crossed.
