So I give this blog about 2 weeks before I forget about it and stop posting in it, but might as well try.

Goals for 2016:

Play more poker, run better at poker, focus more on poker. This thread will probably have a lot of poker content and I could probably post it in PG&C, but well that's lame.

Japan. Ugh, I'm 30 and still haven't been. I have a ton of excuses but they are all pretty poor to be honest. Was planning to go two years ago, and then my travel partner decided to get his wife knocked up and then married her (idiot) and we had to cancel. I've been telling myself that when I go to Japan I'd do a month and see as much as possible. That's stupid and holding me back. I'm in Southeast Asia already and might not be in the future, if all I can do is a weekend or a week then that's fine, but it needs to happen this year.

Get swole. I'll probably get laid more in Japan if I'm swole.

Read a lot. I have so many books that I haven't finished yet. Currently I'm reading four books, which is two books too many but there's just so much out there now. I have about 15 books which I'm bringing back to Philippines with me to read, might be time to invest in a kindle or something along those lines.

Write more. I've been writing a movie script for some time. I want to finish it even though I don't expect I'll attempt to sell it. I love tv and film and it's a fun thing to practice.

Focus. I don't focus on things nearly enough. I'm constantly doing four things at once and it makes all four things suffer in quality (just look at some of my posts). So I'm trying to focus on just one thing at a time for a given amount of time and then move on.

Meditation and yoga. Why not?

Cooking. I love to cook, but it's so hard when I'm living in a studio apartment. I've set some goals on trying recipes and also prepping food for the week.

Sleep. Inevitably I get into a great poker game and stay up until 10am then my sleep schedule is ruined for a week or two. Not sure how to combat this, but going to try.

If anyone has some defined goals and wants an accountabilibuddy let me know.

Ugh first update and it gets eaten by the interwebs.

Bovada was amazing last night. Never seen so many people call 3bets/4bets with absolute garbage, and never seen so many people cold calling. Had two hands in particular where I thought I was off to a huge start in 2016. UTG (200 bbs) raises, CO (350bbs) calls, I 3bet from SB with AA. UTG snap ships, CO snap ships and I'm thinking about how great it'll be if they both have kings, but unfortunately CO has aces and we chop up 100 bbs each. Then another hand, CO raises, Button 3bets, I 4bet aces from the BB and they both call. Flop is Ace/10/8 I bet small, Co folds, and button ships. He has J9 and gets there. Thats how atrocious the level of play was and I somehow managed to make only 90 dollars. Lost KK to KQ with a flush draw, Q10 vs AA on Q1052. AA vs J9 (wtf at everyone calling 3 bets with these hands) on J/2/5 and the list goes on. It was like every flop and turn was the perfect set up for me then **** you river.

Ugh I hate to start off with a bad beat post, hopefully that changes soon.

Having said how great the games are... does anyone still want legalized poker in the States? As horrible as it is that people got their money taken on Black Friday, wow it's preserved the player pool so well. Bringing online poker back would be absolutely awful, especially stars. Pretty much all the major fish areas in the world have been fished up, and this would just bring a huge influx of sharks. Even a site like Bovada which might seem safe due to only allowing US players would suffer a lot as fish have more options to spend their money.

Lost about 400rmb on my Chinese site, so made maybe $30 on the softest day I've seen the tables since I came back 2 weeks ago.

Had no plans to leave New Mexico, but got a call from my friend from college last night asking if I'd like to go to Vegas. Really enjoying relaxing here but I'm considering it. I'd be so unprepared for it though. I arrived in LA mid December in sandals, shorts and short sleeves. I have one dress shirt with me, one pair of pants, and the nicest shoes I have are running shoes. Oh well, yolo.

Sounds good. I'm currently reading Syd Field's Screen: The Foundations of Screenwriting.

Have you read it? I was actually 2/3 the through it 6 months ago but forget it on a plane.

-111 on Bovada today. Started the day off with losing a 360bb pot aces vs kings all in pre. Then QQ to 108s in a 4 bet pot, he flopped a straight, and also set over set in 3 bet pot. I do not know how to win in 3 and 4 bet pots. Ugh. On stars today would have been a 10 buy in downswing easily. Pretty happy to be almost break even after how ****ty I've ran these past two days.

Booked my flight back to Manila in 2 weeks. Half looking forward to it, half just want to stay here and relax and grind online.

Cool, have you read anything on screenwriting?

I asked Gioco from the Book thread in The Lounge about screenwriting and he really went out of his way with the response. This is what he told me:
Quote:
Hi,

There are a zillion books on writing, most of them by people who are writers and not teachers and they don't convey how to write, but a few do.

The basic book for screenwriters for years has been: Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field. He has also written a couple of follow up books to it.

Another, how to do it book on the subject is The Screenwriter's Bible by David Trottier. He provides a lot of nuts and bolts information.

I'd also look at Save the Cat by the late Blake Snyder.

The best all around book on how to complete a novel (or something) I've encountered is The Weekend Novelist Writes a Mystery by Robert Ray et al. It's not about writing, as in how to write well, but about how to develop and complete a work (story) and it's based on a very insightful deconstruction of how a completed novel comes to be.

A good piece of software is Scrivener. Most writers I know seem to use it (though there are a couple of others). I understand it will format a screenplay for you or at least provide the correct format with little trouble. I don't write screenplays so I don't know how that works. It costs less than most others and you may be able to find it on sale.

Best of luck,
Gioco
Guy really knows his stuff and was I really thankful to get this well thought out reply, I was only expecting a book or two.

I've read bits and pieces of different "how to" writings but I've never read the ones you mentioned.

Honestly, I sort of shy away from that sort of thing. I wrote some children's stories and changed up some things to make them "better" (read marketable) and it felt like I wasn't true to myself. Same goes for scripts. I'd rather write one that is all me than try to fit it into a formula.

I will look into those suggestions, though. I'm sure they make you think about things you haven't thought about.

That is the one I want to read the most. Like BBoat said I'm not so much interested on what I should put into my script. I'm much more interested in the process of how to get it done.

Having said that, Syd Field goes into a lot of what makes a good plot and good characters and it's really interesting. He looks at Chinatown a lot, which I've never seen, but his analyses of characters is always really interesting to read. If nothing else I think it's a good study and taking what he says into account will help with writing unique characters.

Save the Cat fell into all the traps that BBoat mentioned. It's very much about how to churn out a movie quickly. He does have a chart which shows how he recommends the plot should be and actually my first script follows it almost exactly and I think it's the strongest of my 3 plots by a mile.

edit: forgot to mention that Field's chapters on the scriptwriting format and why it needs to be done that way and how to do it that way were really good too imo.

Yay let me know what you think. I'm about finished with it. I'll watch Chinatown soon too.

Ugh another bad day, I'm just on the receiving end of set ups so much. Lost AK to aces, QQ to aces and then JJ to KK against a 50bb short stack. To top that off lost with a runner runner nut flush to a straight flush.

I did bink a set in a 4 bet pot to stack kings though, no way I get away from my queens.

-$36 today.

Still running awful in 3 and 4 bet pots. Lost aces to q/10s in a 3 bet pot after the guy limp calls 1/5 his stack.

Lost queens to 8s after a guy flats a 4bet and then open ships 1010j flop.

Lost AK to aces.

Lost Aq to 10s on QQ10.

and I lost 2/2 flips

And here's the best one of all. I raise 67s from hijack and get 3bet otb. I'm ready to fold when the sb flats so I call. Flop comes 345 two clubs, I check button bets, and sb raises. I flat AND THEN DISCONNECT. **** YOU BOVADA. I get back on really quick, but I've already folded. Only consolation is that the turn was a 4 and put a flush up so there's the slim chance I was drawing dead, or if he has AA with a flush draw he has quite a few outs and could have hit. Just such nonsense.

The two all ins I won were AK vs 78 and my QQ vs KK.

Finally had a somewhat interesting spot:

I have Q10cc and raise co, button 3bets I call. Flop is J37 two clubs, I check call. Turn is a 10, we both check. River is a king, and I check ship.

The amount of stupid donk bets is amazing. So many button clickers just love putting money in bad out of position.

+$376 today somehow.

And now to crush some zerg and terrans.

I play pretty much only 6max zone and if none of Chinese tables are running I'll do 2 tables of whatever limit I can get a seat at.

Honestly I feel like my highstakes shenanigans are over, highest I'm willing to play now is 10/20 USD.

Yay run much better today. 1 for 3 in flips for 100 bbs and 1 for 2 at 50 bbs. Could fade 3 outs two times all in vs 50 bbs short stackers though.

Had some guy gift me 200 dollars as well. He raises co, button called, I 3bet from bb with AhAd, Co calls. Flop is 26j two hearts I cbet large he calls. Turn 9h I bet he calls. River is a blank I ship and he calls me with 46o. Guess he put me on AK.

Had 3 hands in a row where I got stacked or stacked someone. First one I get it in with QQ vs AK and lose. Next hand guy open ships utg and I have qq. He has jqo and I win. Next hand Have a4s in the sb and raise guy calls. I check calls a/7/7 flop. Turn 7 I check call. River ace I check raise (not doing this in every player pool I play in) and he ships. Oops oh well I call and he has k7.

+$452

Chinese site I did not run so hot. I try to get an hour or two in when I wake up, but games aren't too good. Some guy decided to stick around and play me heads up though, thanks for the money.

After that games were dead until the evening where I lost my biggest pot of the year. 3 limpers to me and I make it 70 with aces, 2 callers, then someone limp raises, I start to do my normal 2.5x then slide it up, then slide it up some more and then finally slide it up some more since we're 200bbs deep. One guy call colds, and the limp raises calls.

Flop is Q/6/2 checks to me, I bet, get a call, limp raises ships I ship, other guy calls. QQ and 56. **** you. Pot was 7k rmb. Got a few gifts later on though, although I got coolered twice as well.

+1352 rmb

Yesterday I meant to take a break but there was there 2 Chinese fish playing heads up and I couldn't resists. Made 785 rmb in about 10 minutes then they sat out.

Today on Bovada I didn't play much but ran pretty hot, AK > KK, and then had several double barrel spots which all worked and also a 3 barrel bluff which worked. I had KJ otb and raised. Flop with AQJ I 3/4 pot 3/4 pot and overbet river that paired. +188

On the Chinese site I got 3 bet to less than 3x my open three times and hit a set 2 out of 3 times. + 1445. It was nice to run good, just wish my sessions had been longer.

Off to a pretty good start this year. Two days ago I had a horrible session and was not looking forward to seeing how much money I spewed off (had one 3 bet pot I played really poorly imo) and I made $50 dollars somehow. Yay. Also won 320 rmb despite not playing very well. I was sick and exhausted, shouldn't have been playing at all.

Yesterday I woke up and there was a great Chinese game still running so I jumped in and dumped 2k in record time. Then I got into another club and immediately dropped 2.5k but made it all back +1192 aces over kings helped. No bovada.

Saw my first movie of the year: Hateful 8. Found it pretty disappointing and easily Tarantino's worst (haven't seen grindhouse). Here's what I wrote in the lounge:

His entire escape is awful. No one can think of anything bad enough to do to Django (after all the sick stuff we've already seen...) so he is given to slavers. He then talks the slavers into giving him a gun... right.

On top of that, the main villain is already dead. The three people remaining for Django to kill are an old black slave who can't walk without a cane, a seemingly stupid woman who seems pretty nice except for the fact she was the villain's sister, and some guy who had about a minute of screen time. It's just not a very good ending imo, and doesn't do anything close to living up to the rest of the movie.

Spoiler:
I'm not going to mention the gaping plot hole that the sheriff of Red Rock, and two bounty hunters living in the local area don't know what the most wanted criminals in the area look like. It's pretty ridiculous but I'm willing to overlook it, so I'm just not going to talk about it even though it's absolutely ******ed. Not going to even mention it. It's especially irksome because Kurt recognizes the sheriff as the son of some general in a state that is across the country, but still I'm not going to bring up how stupid that was. Also not going to mention leaving the general alive because he makes the cabin look better. Too stupid to waste time on.

So the movie is quite slow, but still interesting until the main characters arrive at the cabin and Sam Jackson talks about pulling out his dingus. Then the movie just goes to ****. This hour + buildup of the main characters is pretty much completely forgotten almost instantly. The sheriff forgets all his racism and buddies up with Sam despite the fact that Sam just murdered his hero. What was playing out like an intricate battle of wits just turns into a masturbatory film for QT. (I guess it is called Hateful 8 afterall, even though there's always at least 9 characters [10 with the guy in the floorboards] so that's to be expected though) The action is just gruesome for the sake of being gruesome and once the action starts it completely erases all the good build up done in the first half of the movie. The flashbacks also just didn't work for me. The narrator was awful, and this further erases the first part's build up because it just turns out that these are the bad guys and the rest doesn't matter. Would have been way more interesting if the movie had continued to explore the characters and kill them off in intelligent ways like Sam and the general's feud. Instead it just moves into mindless QT violence. While fine for some movies (I just talked about how much I like Kill bill 1 and 2 [had to include the 1 and 2 out of spite ] it's not fine when I've sat through an hour + build up for half the characters.)

Have you been able to withdraw from Bovada?
BGP's 2 Week New Year's Resolution Blog Quote

Dealing with Bovada has been a nightmare. I was able to withdraw this summer before going back to China/ Philippines but they charge something like $50 if you withdraw over 1k at a time so I figured I'd just withdraw 1k each month. Didn't work out like that. Despite having never played a hand in in Asia, as soon as I tried to withdraw an extra 1k the next month from Asia they froze my account and canceled the withdrawal. (My account was also frozen last summer because I used a VPN and I had to provide a phone bill to prove I was playing from where I said I was.)

When I got back to the states I called them and some snooty lady said that she'd need to see another bill in order to reactivate my account. I informed her I'd already given the only bill I have (phone bill) this summer to prove that I'm playing from where I am. She said I'm 30 years old so I must have more bills (in a very bitchy way) and I explained that I live in Asia and all my bills go there. I only play Bovada when I'm visiting my family. She then said well it's my fault for using a vpn which is against TOS. I explained that they should have told me that the first time I used a vpn. She said they emailed me explaining the rule. I read my emails and told her that this was not the case. She then said well it was explained when I talked on the phone the first time with bovada. I explained I've never been on the phone with anyone from bovada. She then reactivated my account.

So yes, last summer I did get a 1k withdrawal, but haven't since then.

Brutal session last night. AK<TT on KKTT. KK<AK AIPF, set over set, and a ton of bet flop/ bet turn check/fold river. -200

On my chinese website I lost a4 to 22 to 442 in a limped pot. Never go broke in a limped pot blah blah blah, even against this huge fish? Naturally he immediately sits out.

=538 rmb.
