Enjoy the Bellagio 20 with the $5 time charge. Remember, you don't chop in a time game. What was the 40, $6/half? You won't believe the difference.

Yeah, while action isn't as good as LA, it is always so nice to pay that low time charge vs the absurd drop

Thanks! If I recall correctly, the 20 is now $6 and the 40 is $7. I notice that the LHE games don't do time pots but when I played mixed they always did. Last summer at the 40/80 O8 at the Rio it was always a time pot as well.

In my limited experience, I usually end up playing at the 40 and chopping at the 20. This is largely a function of what the majority of other players do. At the mixed game (7-handed) the default was chop 5 or more and play 4 or fewer, I thought this was a little odd as that game seemed a lot more serious, but I wasn't going to be the one guy who didn't chop there.

My tentative plan this time is to play mostly 20/40 or 2/5NL, unless the 40 game gets more than one table going. The 40 game was tough last January whereas the 20 game was a lot softer. I'm also thinking of playing some 30/60 stud, that game seemed fairly soft (again, very limited experience).

Did you enjoy your outing to the Ameristar?

This weekend on the felt, part 1

Time to get this blog back on track. April is likely to be lean on poker as I’m traveling all weekends except for the first one, perhaps I’ll have a chance to fill in some of the interesting sessions I’ve been playing. And I anticipate checking out Foxwoods in a couple of weeks.

I played the Tuesday mixed game this past week and got smoked, ~$4K. After one session a few weeks ago where we had 8 players show up they’ve decided to limit the numbers to 7 so we can play all the draw games without too much pain (can’t play any superstud games and you need 2 players sitting out when we play 2-7, badeucey, etc). We only had 6 this week. One kinda interesting stud hand: the six up cards include all 4 Aces, a Q, and a J. I brought the J in for 50, Q raised me, I had a Q in the hole. Pretty weird bringing it in with a jack! Another weird one was a badeucey hand with 4-way action to the 3rd draw, everybody draws 1, I’m drawing to a 3-card 4578 and draw a K. It gets checked around, 2 guys drew As and the other made a worse K, 4578K takes the 2-7 half! No other notable hands, I just couldn’t complete a draw all night.

I went to the Ameristar both Friday and Saturday nights this week. Friday night I played one orbit of 2/5-100 before they started a fourth 30/60 game. DocSwag sits down directly to my right in the 2 seat, the 1 seat is a semireg fish who thinks he’s a pro. We start playing 6-handed, new dealer pitches the second card of a new deck off the table, and I immediately know it’s gonna be a slow orbit. First hand finally gets dealt, 2 limps to me (lol in a 6 handed game!) and I raise JJ, and take it down on the turn. Second hand I get dealt AK on the button and flop Broadway, get paid every street. Nice start to the night.

No interesting hands until this one at the main game: 7 handed as there are 2 walkers. Hero opens 77 UTG (button-4), button-2 3-bets, SB calls 3, DocSwag calls in the BB, and I cap? I’m not so enamored by this play in hindsight, SB should have a reasonably strong hand here. Reads on this hand are:

Button-2: Young and aggressive, drinking heavily, saw him cap a kill pot from UTG after a solid player (and 2+2 lurker) 3-bets. Flop was AKx, he went 5 bets against this solid player, turn 5, river Tx, he shows down QJ, I think he coulda held back on the 5th bet out of position against a guy that had AK at a minimum.

SB: 30ish Asian guy, plays fairly well but not a crusher. Opens a bit light sometimes OOP but generally solid.

BB: DocSwag, 2+2er, likes to play hands against me?

The 4 of us see a flop of 34Jr, blinds check to me and I bet, all call. Turn is a 5, blinds check to me and I bet again, button-2 folds, blinds calls. I intend to check the river unimproved, pretty sure I’m behind SB at this point, river is a 6, now DocSwag bets out, and I raise, SB folds, Doc calls and announces 2 pair (65 Doc, that’s the only one that makes sense?), MHIG.

Later on we play an interesting sequence of hands: straddle is on (!), straddler seems like he’s been drinking, 2 calls including DocSwag, I 3-bet AQo from the button, BB calls, straddler 4-bets, and I cap (5 bets permitted when there’s a straddle). 5 of us see a flop of J95r, straddle bets out, all call. Turn is 5, straddle bets, Doc raises, straddle 3-bets and Doc calls. Heads-up to the river which is another J, he bets and Doc calls. Guy says he forgot what he had and rolls over 87s or similar, but he’s playing the board LOL, and Doc has K5s. That set up a bizarre sequence where the straddler got smashed in 3 consecutive hands where he actually had the goods and lost about $1500. Very next hand his AT lost to KT on a (T54)TK board

Hand after that went like this: Doc limps button-3, Hero raises A7o, button (young agro guy from earlier) 3-bets, SB (straddler a couple of hands ago) caps, all call. 4 of us see a flop of J87r, SB checks, Doc bets, I call, button raises, all call (pot $670). Turn A, checked to button who bets, SB raises, Doc folds and I 3-bet, button tank-folds, SB calls (pot $1070). River is T, yuck, SB bets out and I call, he shows AK, whew.

Final hand of the sequence has this guy flopping a flush and losing to a bigger flush, pretty standard, but he picked up after that.

Final interesting hand(s) of the night: This first one is a bit of a set up for the second. The 30ish Asian guy from hand #1 earlier opens UTG+1 and is heads up vs BB, flop AJx with 2 clubs, turn is A, river is a blank, and BB shows 23 to beat AK. On the next hand 30ish Asian guy opens UTG, DocSwag calls UTG+1, and I tell opener I’m gonna help his chances, and I 3-bet AK. Two calls including BB, 5 to a flop of 36Tr, Doc bets, all call. Turn is J that puts a flush draw out there, it’s gets checked through. River is Q, now BB bets out, Doc raises, 2 pair seems as likely as a flush here, and I have Broadway so I call, BB tank-calls, Doc has 43 and is finally unstuck and possibly done tilting, but I’m racking up to go home anyway.

I had a very good night, +$1400. Gotta get to bed, I’ll try to post about Saturday night soon.

This weekend on the felt, part 2

Continuing yesterday’s weekend update:

Saturday was an epic spring day, and I did a nice little trail run and some yard work before heading up to the Ameristar. They were just getting the third game of 30/60 started when I got there, but I ended up playing 45 minutes of 2/5 and winning a couple hundred dollars, mostly due to a turned nut flush in a multiway pot, before they opened a fourth table. This table was pretty tough, as was the third table when I got there. I played for about 3 hours and lost $400 before I did something I often think about but never do: I racked up and went to dinner, and put my name back on the list (45 minute wait) so I could start again at the much softer looking must-move games. This proved to be a very +EV decision.

I get back from dinner and there are 2 open seats at the 4th table. As soon as I sit down the only good player (actually one of the best but he only plays occasionally, 2+2 lurker, including this blog I think) in the game racks up (not because I sat down). So it’s me and 6 terrible players. I’m getting beat up early when I 3-bet my QQ, limper calls 2 and his T5 flop 2 pairs, I can’t improve. Next ugly one is a kill pot, 3 limps to me in the SB and I raise AQo, 5 of us see a flop of AJ4r, I bet and get 3 calls ($700 pot). Turn 9, 2 calls this time ($1000). River is T, I check, BB checks, and early position limper bets, which I call. He has JTo. So I’m stuck close of $800 early.

No matter, my table just keeps getting better, T5s (another MAWG) gets replaced by terrible Asian gal, so now its Quantph and the 8 Asian degenerates. This might be the best line up I have ever played in. I win a bunch of small pots and soon I play this hand: kill pot, killer in early position, 2 limps, and Hero raises KJ from the button. BB tells me he has a strong hand and calls, lol, 5 of us see a flop of J74r, 1. BB bets, 3 calls, and Hero raises. BB 3-bets, 3 calls, and Hero caps. 2 players including BB are all in, ~$1400 pot now. Turn is Q, 2 check/calls to my bet. I’m hoping for any diamond or J, but river is offsuit 9. Two checks, and I check behind, sure that someone has 2 pair or hit a gutshot, but nope, 1 pair is good for a $1700 pot…

I racked up 45 minutes later (+~1300 for the evening) so I could get a decent nights sleep before my 9 AM soccer game on Sunday, friend of mine there couldn’t believe I was leaving this juicy game. But I was in charge of bringing beer:

A 1554 and a Ranger IPA stayed behind in my frig, I drank a Ranger and there was another one remaining once everyone had a beer, so it was a win all around (including the game, which we won 6-0, their goalie was terrible).

One other note before I sign off: a couple of weeks I sit down to open the 4th table on a Friday night, guy on my left is someone I’ve played with a few times before but nothing notable, usually means tight at this game as I mentally note the loose players. A few hands in he asks me if I have a blog on 2+2, which of course I do. Says he’s never asked anyone else, that I just look the part of a MAWG sometimes runner (I am pretty thin and was wearing a New Balance jacket), maybe someone had said something about Boulder as well. I’m always surprised when someone I know from the game turns out to a 2+2er…

Do I like to play hands against you? No I wouldn't say that. I don't go out of my way to get in your pots, but there is the challenge of battling against a good thinking player. You don't often get into 3rd level thinking in our game, so sometimes that's fun...
And yes, I did have the 65

Yeah, that sequence was crazy. I wonder if everybody played differently against him after he showed zilch against me. I don't think he could see straight when he got up to leave...

OK, obviously I'm a donkey for playing that hand, but in my defense I did declare, "I apologize in advance." I was on supreme monkey tilt and that hand did get me unstuck. I had like a $3k upward swing in 45minutes. The problem becomes being rewarded for play like that is the worst thing for me as it reinforces stupid play. I promise to be more disciplined in the future

Do you happen to follow Ronnie Bardah on twitter? I guess he was the missed blind when the bad beat hit earlier this week. He and Evan now have something in common...Man, I would rather never hit a bad beat than be the guy with a missed blind...

See you tomorrow?

Hey Doc,

I like the advance apology twist, I believe you did that in the K5s hand as well, perhaps you should try it every time you put your $$$ in the pot JK, I could tell you were tilted hard, but I couldn't say anything cause 1) it wouldn't have mattered and 2) you were directly on my right, and money flows CW at the table

Didn't follow the Bardah bad beat miss, but I read up on his Twitter. Lots of discussion about whether a missed blind should get tipped by the other players since it wouldn't have hit if that player had taken a hand. IMO, no payout, I wouldn't expect it nor would I offer it. There was missed blind at my table when it hit, I don't think anybody paid that guy. Just dumb luck, maybe if he's there the previous hand it hits then instead of not hitting, no way of knowing.

Yeah, probably see you Friday night, hope that dealer can manage to keep at least the first orbit of cards on the table!

Hey everyone, if anybody's still out there, sorry about the extended silence here, the past couple of months have been utterly manic. I've been traveling a lot, mostly to DC for work, trying to keep my other work projects from imploding, and moving. I'm still in Boulder but about to remodel my house so in temporary quarters for about a year.

I'm writing this update while on the bus to the airport (and overhearing some random guy on the bus talking about going to the WSOP and playing poker to his seat mate, sounds like he knows what he's talking about) to Vegas for my WSOP trip (trip report in LVL, Welcome to the Jungle Redux).

I haven't been playing much lately because of all the stuff I mentioned earlier, but I have managed to visit a couple of big venues outside of Colorado. I was in downtown San Jose for a conference a couple of weeks ago and flew out a day early to play Bay 101 on a Saturday evening. I played a bit of 2/3/5 NL (-$45, 45 minutes) until my 20/40 LHE seat opened. I played for another 45 minutes and won $5 before I finally got called for 40/80 LHE (80/160 was also running but I'm always a bit gun shy of jumping into the deep end at a casino I'm unfamiliar with). The game was great, plenty of open limping and lots of bad bluffing. And, to top it all off, I ran hotter than the surface of the sun😎 Every time I had big cards I would flop a pair, all of my draws got there, none of theirs did.

Here's a few good ones:

1-One limper, I raise KJo from the cutoff, blinds call. Flop is KKJ 2tone, checked to me and I bet, SB craises and I call. Turn is a blank, I raise in case he has something besides a bluff but he folds.
2-I open TT from UTG+1, 2 calls + blinds call, flop is 3 under cards, 2tone. I bet, guy on my left raises, button and BB cold call 2, and I 3bet, all call. Turn is an off suit J, I bet, 2 calls in position, river is an off suit A, 2 folds.

It went like that most of the night, and I racked up +$3.5k in about 5 hours of play. Always nice to win!

I also made the trek from Boston down to Foxwoods for the first time in early April. The poker room is enormous! I can only imagine how great the games were 10 or 20 years ago. Apparently FWs is where all the old stud players go to die, I was 10 years younger than anyone else in this game for most of the night. 3 tables of 20/40 stud running (only 1 or 2 20/40 hold 'em games going). I sat down immediately. $3 ante is terrible idea, slows the game down while the dealer makes change. Not any notable hands, what I did notice is that several people would call the bring in then fold if I completed with a big up card, that was easy to exploit. I ran ok and won a few hundred playing too many hours.

Rooms there were ridiculously expensive for a Friday night, $399 on their website! I stayed 20 minutes away then came back on Saturday afternoon and played some hold 'em and ran pretty good. I was card dead for awhile and folding a lot early on, then folded on the turn after I opened AT from middle position and was 3-bet by the agro old guy on my left, missed the flop and turn. Two orbits later I open AJ from UTG+1, cutoff seems like he's been paying attention 3-bets, and the two of us see a Q-high flop. I ck/call all 3 streets including another Q on the river, he shows his AJ and seems incredulous when when I showed the same. Guess I shoulda craised the river... I had a solid session including a flopped set on an A high board that I fast played and got paid every street. A solid winning session, $600 in 2 hrs.

Only a handful of Astar and home game sessions for the past couple of months, running horrible in the mixed games (2-7, I open a one card draw to an 8, blinds call, BB takes 5 and makes a 7 on the second draw, lol). Met a guy at the 30/60 game a couple of months ago, new table, I'm talking to someone and he asks me if I have a 2+2 blog! I guess I look the part...

That's about all for now, I'll be back here later in June after WSOP.

(I'm finally posting this now after a few days in Vegas, turns out the guy from the bus knows a bunch of people from the 30 game at Ameristar)

lol. Nice stories. Glad to have you back.

Was sitting at Bellagio a few years ago in maybe a 15/30. A guy walks by the table and does a double take, "you guys realize that 8 of you at the table play at the Lodge? Did you guys need to fly to Vegas to play in a home game." We hadn't, but looking around the table, faces started to be familiar. Colorado players play the poker.

Moved to CO from the SF area and can confirm the CAG's definitely made for some crazy swings in those games. If I remember correctly, the 80/160 @ Bay 101 usually only ran on Fri/Sat nights (ala 50/100 @ Ameristar) with 100/200 occasionally running instead.

Just curious... is Bay still using those god-awful plastic chips or have they stepped up to clay?

Good to be back! I'm getting the hang of posting from my phone, use a separate program to type these out and then copy/paste. Lots of Astar 30/60 players everywhere here, 4 40/80 games running here at the B on a Monday afternoon, I'm in the 40/80 mix with one of the home game guys (one of the bad ones &#128515

Thanks! I'm down to one event left after busting $1500 O8 and Colossus, just Millionaire Maker to go. I didn't really notice the chips at Bay 101, they didn't feel odd so I'm guessing they're clay.

I’m Back

Well, I never really left, just took a somewhat longer than anticipated hiatus from this blog. No single reason for doing so, just not so much time for writing or playing poker these past several months. After the WSOP I came back to a mountain of work, just a lot of projects with a short timeline for completion. But it all culminated with my group completing a very high profile experiment this fall, a rare opportunity to be a part of something with lasting impact. On the negative side of the timesinks, I also pinched a nerve in my back this summer, ruined my cycling season as well as the fall soccer season. I’m mostly healed from that but still not 100%, I’m not anticipating too many days on the slopes this winter. On top of all this I’m remodeling my house, not doing the work myself but it’s still a big and somewhat stressful project, lots of decisions to make. It’s gonna very nice in about 6 more months, I’m anticipating getting a nice poker table for some home games.

All of that led to not too many days of poker for the past several months, but here are a few of my favorite hands of the past several months:

1) 75/150 O8 game at the WSOP, it’s a kill pot to 100/200. Vanessa Selbst opens , 2 calls including the killer on the button, SB calls and Hero calls from the BB with A23x. Brief aside: Vanessa was cool to play with, she posed for a few photos with railbirds, and refrained from biting the head off of the guy in the seat in between us even though he kept talking to her when she was in the middle of a hand. He also asked if she was the woman who won a tournament without looking at her hole cards, and she said she thought that was Annette Oberstad. Back to the hand: Five of us see a flop ($1000 pot) of 349r, Vanessa bets and everyone calls ($1500 pot). Turn is a Q, she bets all call again ($2500 pot). River is another 9, she bets again, 3 folds, and I’m about to muck bottom pair when I realize that there’s $2700 in this pot and throw in a couple of black chips. “Your four is good,” she says, and I know that means my 3 is good as well as a I table my hand. Certainly some part of that was watching her on TV, I wouldn’t want to play NL with her but getting 13.5:1 seemed like an easy call in hind sight. Without a doubt my favorite hand of the year.

2) I played this one at the 30/60 game at Ameristar a few weeks ago: A couple of weak calling stations limp, drunk guy who defended his 92o straddle a few orbits ago (of course he won the hand and feels like a genius) raises (he also had showed down some terrible hands that he had raised with previously), one call after him and I call A9s in the SB, BB calls as do the 2 limpers and 6 of us (pot $360) see a flop of A94r. I don’t want to c/r and push out all of the weaker hands so I donk my top 2 pairs, one of the stations calls, and drunk guy raises, I just call to let station call ($540). Turn is an 8, I bet out again, station calls, drunk guy follows the plan and raises again, this time I 3-bet and station folds, drunk guy calls ($960). River is a blank and he calls my 3rd lead bet of course, and I take down an $1080 pot

3) This might be the strangest hand I’ve played in recent memory: I get into the 30/60 game as a new player and post $30 behind the button (as of a few months ago you can no longer come in for free, you have to post). UTG+2 opens, 2 calls, and I call 87o getting 8.5:1, button calls, SB folds, BB (aggressive tourney pro, decent if not outstanding 30 player) 3-bets, UTG+2 caps, all call. 6 to a flop ($720) of K62, UTG+2 bets, 2 calls, I’m getting 27:1 and call knowing I need runner-runner, button folds, BB call ($870). Turn is a 4, UTG+2 bets again, 2 calls in front of me and my gutshot is easily priced in ($1050 already in the pot), BB c/r! and all call ($1470). River is a beautiful, harmless looking 5, BB bets, only UTG+2 calls this time, and I raise the nuts. There are $1650 in the pot, and both players fold for $60 more! 28.5:1, how far down in your range do you have to go to call there?? BB claims he folded a set of 4s but that’s completely implausible.

I hacked out all of the above when I was on a plane to the DC area for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, my relatives are much close to Hollywood Charlestown than Maryland Live, and I didn’t plan for the 75/150 LHE game there so I didn’t bother to make the trek. I came back on the Friday after Thanksgiving and got to play in Black Hawk on Saturday, it was close to the best I’ve ever seen, and of course it helps to make a few hands and get paid. The guy on my right played 90% of the hands he was dealt was always there to pay off when I made a hand. I racked up close to +~$3K for a fifth consecutive winning session. This past Friday I arrived at 7 PM and there were already 4 tables running, I helped start the 5th game 1 hour later. Surprisingly, it was not a great line up, most of the weaker players were already in the main games. I folded a lot but made just enough hands to win ~$400 despite not playing all that well (mostly calling down a bit too light against the one guy who seemed to have it every time against me and having squat against everyone else).

That’s all for now. I have months worth of beer reviews for you, and I’d like to do a “2-years at the Ameristar BH 30/60 game” post as well. Now that the dust has settled a bit at work I hope to be playing and posting more here, I’ve met several people through 2+2 and would like to continue to do so.

Work getting in the way of Black Hawk trips??? Can definitely relate there.

Have heard a few first-hand stories of VS not being so pleasant @ the table (in tournaments), but sounds like you had a good experience, which is nice. Guess her cash game temperament is a bit better.

Definitely looking forward to the 2-yr update.

Happy 2016!

I finished up 2015 on a really nice winning streak, 11 of 12 30/60 sessions starting with the end of October. But 3 losing sessions started 2016, the last session was fairly brutal (lost with a flopped set of aces, KK, and QQ twice). Two more winning sessions since then, including one huge one ($4K) the night after the ugly loss.

Last night (Saturday) was a fun session (aren’t they always fun when you win?). A little frustrating start, they tried to start a fifth table for 30 minutes but we could only get 5 and nobody else wanted to play short-handed. I gave up a juicy 5-100 game for that. Finally got into the 4th game, posted behind and almost saw a bad beat jackpot, flopped quads faded the flopped up-and-down straight flush draw. Did I mention that this was the 2 year anniversary of my BBJ? I missed the Powerball, I’m overdue! The jackpot is back to ~$280K, very close to the $286K number when I hit it.

I had a very good table. There was some crazy Asian guy (CAG) who I’d never played with before who seemed to think he could bluff every single hand. After watching him try this with a couple of other players I knew that he would fire air on every street. My first hand with him went like this: CAG opens from UTG+1 and I 3-bet 99 from UTG+3. We’re heads-up to a flop of QQ5, and he donks. He never has a Q here, but his modus operandi is to keep firing, I plan to call here and raise a safe turn. Unfortunately the turn is a red A, and I decide to just call again. River is a blank, he fires a third time, I call again and he mucks his hand.

With this in mind, we later play this hand (CAG has now moved to my direct right). He opens UTG+2 and I 3 bet AT (this is way ahead of most of his opening range). We’re heads-up to a flop of AQ9, he donks again and this time I raise. Now I’m surprised by his 3-bet, and I just call. He fires a blank turn, and I call again. River is an offsuit J, we both check and he mucks his hand. I guess I missed a bet on the turn?

I never understand the b/3b out of position with a draw. I often see an in-position raise with a draw, I like the deer-in-the headlights look they have when I 3-bet them. A good example of this situation came up a couple of weeks ago in this hand: I open AA UTG+1 and get 5 callers including the blinds. Flop is A87, I bet top set and button (terrible younger Asian, plays way too many hands and plays them badly) raises, terrible old woman calls from the BB. Pretty obvious 3-bet situation, smells like the free card play, hopefully it’s two pair and I’m crushing it. They both call, and we see an ugly 9 on the turn. BB checks, I bet and both button and BB call? River is a blank, they both just call my bet, I’m sure I’m good. Button sees my set and rolls over his JTo for a straight. He’s so scared of the flush he doesn’t even raise, lol. Given the preflop action he was even getting the right price on his gutshot.

Not much else to report here. I have no new beers to review for you (I had a bunch but can’t find any useful note anymore). I took a short trip to Vegas in December, in part to give me flights 24 and 25 on Southwest in 2015 and A-list for all of 2016 (I never have to call for a seat 24 hours before flight time, they just assign me a seat around A20 or thereabouts). My buddy and I stayed at the Orleans and played low stakes (8/16 O8 was the biggest game I played). By coincidence the Republican debate was happening at the Venetian then, we went over for a look-see:

Couldn’t easily get in to the hotel, we watched the CNN team that was outside reporting on this ****show.

I decided to invest some of my heater winning in liquor in December:

The Ardbeg was a birthday present for a friend, we had recently tasted a wide range of Ardbeg whiskys but not this one. I highly recommend, very smooth with a modest amount of peat. The Suntory is for me, somebody once gave me a similar bottle (Royal Suntory 15 year old). The Hibiki is a bit sweet and very enjoyable, and I’m enjoying some right now

Nice report.

Didn't know that moderate peat and Islays went together.

Thanks. there was a variety of bottles from Ardbeg at the annual whisky tasting this year, although they don't seem to appear in this photo:

It was more than a month ago, and well, I drank a lot of whisky, I don't really recall any of the details except there was a flight from Ardbeg, and they all tasted a bit different. Have you had any of the Supernova? My friend turns 50 next December, that seems like a good birthday to get a really expensive bottle of Scotch.
