This weekend on the felt, part 1
Time to get this blog back on track. April is likely to be lean on poker as I’m traveling all weekends except for the first one, perhaps I’ll have a chance to fill in some of the interesting sessions I’ve been playing. And I anticipate checking out Foxwoods in a couple of weeks.
I played the Tuesday mixed game this past week and got smoked, ~$4K. After one session a few weeks ago where we had 8 players show up they’ve decided to limit the numbers to 7 so we can play all the draw games without too much pain (can’t play any superstud games and you need 2 players sitting out when we play 2-7, badeucey, etc). We only had 6 this week. One kinda interesting stud hand: the six up cards include all 4 Aces, a Q, and a J. I brought the J in for 50, Q raised me, I had a Q in the hole. Pretty weird bringing it in with a jack! Another weird one was a badeucey hand with 4-way action to the 3rd draw, everybody draws 1, I’m drawing to a 3-card 4578 and draw a K. It gets checked around, 2 guys drew As and the other made a worse K, 4578K takes the 2-7 half! No other notable hands, I just couldn’t complete a draw all night.
I went to the Ameristar both Friday and Saturday nights this week. Friday night I played one orbit of 2/5-100 before they started a fourth 30/60 game. DocSwag sits down directly to my right in the 2 seat, the 1 seat is a semireg fish who thinks he’s a pro. We start playing 6-handed, new dealer pitches the second card of a new deck off the table, and I immediately know it’s gonna be a slow orbit. First hand finally gets dealt, 2 limps to me (lol in a 6 handed game!) and I raise JJ, and take it down on the turn. Second hand I get dealt AK on the button and flop Broadway, get paid every street. Nice start to the night.
No interesting hands until this one at the main game: 7 handed as there are 2 walkers. Hero opens 77 UTG (button-4), button-2 3-bets, SB calls 3, DocSwag calls in the BB, and I cap? I’m not so enamored by this play in hindsight, SB should have a reasonably strong hand here. Reads on this hand are:
Button-2: Young and aggressive, drinking heavily, saw him cap a kill pot from UTG after a solid player (and 2+2 lurker) 3-bets. Flop was A
K
x, he went 5 bets against this solid player, turn 5
, river Tx, he shows down Q
J
, I think he coulda held back on the 5th bet out of position against a guy that had AK at a minimum.
SB: 30ish Asian guy, plays fairly well but not a crusher. Opens a bit light sometimes OOP but generally solid.
BB: DocSwag, 2+2er, likes to play hands against me?
The 4 of us see a flop of 34Jr, blinds check to me and I bet, all call. Turn is a 5, blinds check to me and I bet again, button-2 folds, blinds calls. I intend to check the river unimproved, pretty sure I’m behind SB at this point, river is a 6, now DocSwag bets out, and I raise, SB folds, Doc calls and announces 2 pair (65 Doc, that’s the only one that makes sense?), MHIG.
Later on we play an interesting sequence of hands: straddle is on (!), straddler seems like he’s been drinking, 2 calls including DocSwag, I 3-bet AQo from the button, BB calls, straddler 4-bets, and I cap (5 bets permitted when there’s a straddle). 5 of us see a flop of J95r, straddle bets out, all call. Turn is 5, straddle bets, Doc raises, straddle 3-bets and Doc calls. Heads-up to the river which is another J, he bets and Doc calls. Guy says he forgot what he had and rolls over 87s or similar, but he’s playing the board LOL, and Doc has K5s. That set up a bizarre sequence where the straddler got smashed in 3 consecutive hands where he actually had the goods and lost about $1500. Very next hand his AT lost to KT on a (T54)TK board
Hand after that went like this: Doc limps button-3, Hero raises A7o, button (young agro guy from earlier) 3-bets, SB (straddler a couple of hands ago) caps, all call. 4 of us see a flop of J87r, SB checks, Doc bets, I call, button raises, all call (pot $670). Turn A, checked to button who bets, SB raises, Doc folds and I 3-bet, button tank-folds, SB calls (pot $1070). River is T, yuck, SB bets out and I call, he shows AK, whew.
Final hand of the sequence has this guy flopping a flush and losing to a bigger flush, pretty standard, but he picked up after that.
Final interesting hand(s) of the night: This first one is a bit of a set up for the second. The 30ish Asian guy from hand #1 earlier opens UTG+1 and is heads up vs BB, flop AJx with 2 clubs, turn is A
, river is a blank, and BB shows 2
3
to beat AK. On the next hand 30ish Asian guy opens UTG, DocSwag calls UTG+1, and I tell opener I’m gonna help his chances, and I 3-bet AK. Two calls including BB, 5 to a flop of 36Tr, Doc bets, all call. Turn is J
that puts a flush draw out there, it’s gets checked through. River is Q
, now BB bets out, Doc raises, 2 pair seems as likely as a flush here, and I have Broadway so I call, BB tank-calls, Doc has 4
3
and is finally unstuck and possibly done tilting, but I’m racking up to go home anyway.
I had a very good night, +$1400. Gotta get to bed, I’ll try to post about Saturday night soon.
