One reason is that given the average disparities in education and environment leading up to the SAT the expectation is that a black or Hispanic kid with the same SAT score as your kid will be considerably more intelligent and motivated. Personally I wouldn't explicitly use race as a factor, but judge people relative to their high school or other ways to evaluate people's performance considering their circumstances.

Now, are Asian students actually discriminated against at Harvard? I can't say for sure. I'd guess probably, but mainly we don't have the data to know. There's a lawsuit in the court system now and we'll see how it goes.

How do I know? Go look at the new York City high school placement test. The mayor wants to make it a more "wholistic" approach because Asians absolutely dominate the test. It's straight up racism. If it was black kids who dominated the testing I guarantee you it would be lauded as some sort of great progress.
