There's nothing unique about manufacturing. In the US, if you are an at-will employee, the bosses can fire you at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all. This includes both inappropriate communications via private company means, and any public communications... such as letters to the editor, or private postings on the interwebs/etc, of pretty much anything the bosses find rubs them the wrong way.
People get fired for this shiz all-day-every-day. This isn't news.
