I think a lot of this discussion depends largely on the definition of "thug" being used.
The word is derived from Thuggee (Hindi word for thief), a 19th century organized gang from central India. Per wikipedia:
The Thugs would join travelers and gain their confidence. This would allow them to then surprise and strangle their victims by pulling a handkerchief or noose tight around their necks. They would then rob their victims of valuables and bury their bodies.
I can't think of any action Richard Sherman has taken that in spirit resembles the robberies and murders conducted by this group.
However, I would say that we could metaphorically use the term "thug" to refer to numerous professionals in the financial services industry who graduated from several elite universities. Maybe not as far as violence goes, but definitely in the sense of gaining the confidence of a mark and then taking his valuables in a manner deemed unethical by society at large.
