Cool. My point still stands. We work so much because WE want to. We want to continue improving our standard of living and acquiring more stuff. Not because of less union power or evil corporations.

This subject is vexing for me because in general I have been economically conservative most my life, and I think a healthy free economy can't function very well with such constrains. And in general I think most people in the US have benefitted from the higher standard of living - rising tide lifts all boats. All one needs to do is look at how even the upper class lived 100 years ago to see the middle class and even most poor have it better. Air conditioning, cell phones, motor vehicles. We're all suffering from morbid obesity FCS.

But looking into the not so distance future of artificial intelligence and advanced robotics, I'm not sure even the white collar workers will have much work to do, so how does this system adjust?

The same type of questions are asked everytime there are major changes in the economy.

As soon as someone invents the plow what are we all going to do? If people stop working in the fields and start working in factories are we all going to starve?

People today say our economy is in shambles because "we don't make stuff anymore". Not sure about you but I'm happy not to be working in a field or factory.
