"What on Earth did conservatism ever accomplish for our country?"
- Charles Kuralt

I'm sure there have been some things. I mean, deregulation has been pretty awesome if you like legalized fraud and all. .... But I'd welcome anyone to whip up a few more bullet points.

1. Ballooning the defense budget and military industrial complex.

Before you can even talk of world reconstruction, or even of peace, you have got to eliminate Hitler, which means bringing into being a dynamic not necessarily the same as that of the Nazis, but probably quite as unacceptable to ‘enlightened’ and hedonistic people. What has kept England on its feet during the past year? In part, no doubt, some vague idea about a better future, but chiefly the atavistic emotion of patriotism, the ingrained feeling of the English-speaking peoples that they are superior to foreigners. For the last twenty years the main object of English left-wing intellectuals has been to break this feeling down, and if they had succeeded, we might be watching the S.S. men patrolling the London streets at this moment.

Similarly, why are the Russians fighting like tigers against the German invasion? In part, perhaps, for some half-remembered ideal of Utopian Socialism, but chiefly in defence of Holy Russia (the ‘sacred soil of the Fatherland’, etc. etc.), which Stalin has revived in an only slightly altered from. The energy that actually shapes the world springs from emotions — racial pride, leader-worship, religious belief, love of war — which liberal intellectuals mechanically write off as anachronisms, and which they have usually destroyed so completely in themselves as to have lost all power of action….

I think there is a case for deregulation (or a pro-business mindset in general)-- I think it's gone way beyond what could be considered good for society, however.

Correction: the energy that shapes the world is a bubblin' crude with 25:1+ EROEI, but I digress.

If "racial pride" was needed to harness and secure that ambition, well ok.

They do a good job of keeping taxes at a reasonable level. I mean I know there probably isn't one person in the US who thinks the tax system is perfect - but if liberals had their way with no pushback from conservatives, we'd be paying like 80% in federal income tax to fund free watermelon and collard greens programs.

Just think how mad political correctness would be if they weren't around though.

This post combined with your avatar of Leo giving his speech on phrenology makes me think you might be a racist.

Did someone really play a "free watermelons" card?

I know we're unchained and all- but is the intent of this forum really to let this asshat stormfront all over the place? Somebody need to go to their room.

Hector,

That is why you are getting heat in the bad poasters thread.

Somebody has a sore rump.

The intent of this forum is precisely so halfwits like you don't get to editorialize what we talk about. You're going to have to influence the conversation with your intellect instead of your ban hammer. Good luck with that.

I voted for Obama twice. Your argument is invalid.

I don't think you get how "unintentional racism" is supposed to work. To be fair, it's a terribad concept in the first place.

You're the ****ing racist if you assume 'free watermelons' has anything to do with race. Who doesn't like watermelons?
