Re: President Trump

Initial thoughts on Trump's speech (I recorded and watched later):

- first 5 minutes seemed good, I started wondering if this was going to be a transformational speech where he changes gears and actually tries to unite the country
- butnahhhhh

- draining the swamp: as has been outlined many times here, claims that Trump is doing anything but making government corruption worse is utter garbage; he'd be better off never mentioning that phrase again and pretending it didn't happen

- infrastructure spending: I'm actually glad that he managed to get a party that 8 years ago thought a $1T stimulus package was going to be socialism taking away our freedom and our jerbs to stand up and cheer loudly for the same proposal. Good for Trump lobbying for big government spending programs! As a liberal, I'm a fan.

- on health care: this segment illustrated the problem Republicans have with reforming health care quite well. Half the things he mentioned that the new program needs to do are things that Obamacare already does; Obamacare is popular, if you don't associate it with the president that instituted it. And it's still, as it's always been, totally nebulous how you make this kind of plan work without an individual mandate; by complaining about it so hard for the last 8 years, Republicans have kind of painted themselves into a corner for ever coming up with a workable plan.

- immigration: I do not use this word likely - go search for me using the word "nazi" if you don't believe me - but VOICE is some serious nazi ****. Dude is creating an entire office dedicated to propagandize immigrants as scary criminals. Truly frightening for the government to be engaging in such behavior. This has Bannon's fingerprints all over it.

- additionally on immigration, pokerodox - contrast the language Trump used to describe the people being removed from the country atm (bad dudes, dangers to their communities, etc) with the stories we've seen of people being removed who are the opposite of that

Probably some other things I'm forgetting off the top of my head that I'll remember later

Re: President Trump

Remembered a few more things:

- crime: Trump is incapable of talking honestly about his subject because his campaign promises were all based on painting the United States, a country where crime has been falling for quite awhile, as a crime-filled hellhole in desperate need of martial law, so it's hard to take anything he says on the subject at face value

- SEAL widow is a good example of how bad Democrats are at playing the kind of dirty politics that Republicans rode into the White House; this was basically the equivalent of Obama hypothetically (he would never have done this obv) putting a Benghazi widow on stage and praising her husband's brave service, but Democrats have utterly failed at grilling him as hard as they should have on the Yemen raid and getting this guy killed in what they were hoping would be a PR stunt. It failed spectacularly, but Democrats have still given Trump the PR win because he says the raid was successful and they're too chicken**** to call him out

- he started laying out the case for a new drug war which is obviously absurdly terrible policy that hasn't worked at any point in the last 30 years and isn't going to work now, and would completely reverse the positive steps we've made towards reforming the criminal justice system in recent years

Clearly his loyalties lie with industry, he's straight up lying in this speech.

It's similar with defense spending. Bernie said we spend as much on defense as the next 12 countries combined, I think I read elsewhere it's the next 7 countries, whatever the number is it's significant - how on earth can we spend $600 billion on defense per year and have Trump call that out in a speech as not enough, as our military being underfunded? If we're not getting our money's worth, isn't that the kind of problem we should address before throwing $80 billion more at it? It's phenomenal the return that defense companies get for the $67 million they spend on lobbying per year - you have the president of the United States up on stage asking Congress to give them a 1,000x return on it. "Draining the swamp", lol what a joke.

What is crazy is that with how much is spent on defense, when we actually get into a war our troops lack basic things like body armor such as in the Iraq war. How can we spend that much and still not have our troops properly equipped when they are sent into battle?

Re: President Trump

By the way, regarding the success of the Yemen raid: NBC reports anonymous senior government officials saying the raid yielded no significant intelligence. ABC quotes an anonymous senior U.S. official as saying "valuable intelligence" was recovered. It's noteworthy that there is no consensus on this even as Trump claims it to be true as he parades the SEAL's widow out in front of the country as propaganda.

I worded things poorly, but not incorrectly. there has been a dramatic rise in the readership and interaction of such web sites is more clear. breitbart gets enough readers to be a main stream news source now. 4chan/8chan is hugely popular. that swedish youtube guy is one of the most popular.

I really dont know if there is less racism in housing and hiring than 10 yrs ago. 10 yrs ago was not that long ago. I suspect the numbers would not show much difference either way.

I do think that right now, at this moment, is really not the best time to be looking at numbers. we are in a period of flux and I think that given the rhetoric and policies of this administration, in a few years things could get really bad. in other words, I dont think there has been enough time to accurately assess the impact of the recent administration's philosophies.

I think this is largely due to the media. fox would just absolutely murder the dems if they did the same. cnn etc would report more or less the same. most libs would kinda shake their head and accept that the dems effed up while fox (and now breitbart etc) would have the right in frothy rage while the troll brigade drew up varying memes and slogans.

so ya, like always, its fox news fault.

It's interesting we are looking at a significant increase in offense, I mean, defense spending and Trump is making NATO allies increase their military expenditures at the same time. Gee, I wonder what direction we are headed?

You guys are worried about illegal mexicans and where people can pee, meanwhile we are preparing for war.

Do you really believe this country will become another nazi Germany? That was a long time ago after a humiliating defeat in WW1. It was at a time were several nations were accelerating the building of their military. It was at a time Germany was struggling economically.

Most importantly, the US has rules and regulations that prevent a Hitler type to take over as dictator. There is too much Bureaucracy, checks and balances and traditions for this to happen. Look at how the Democrats have slowed down Trumps agenda already in just over a month.

It's time to accept that President Trump wants our country to be great for everybody! It's those people who don't accept this vision that will be left behind.

I think everyone realizes we are ramping up for a potential conflict, maybe with Iran.

In fact, more democrats seem to be aware of this than republicans. Do some research wil. Please.

there are not enough victims of immigration crime to justify the foul and dehumanizing treatment that is being promoted for immigrants. the statistics show that immigrants are quite a bit less likely to engage in criminal activity.

cite or ban amirite?

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/26/u...nts-crime.html

in my opinion, and in my anecdotal experience, and from the studies and news Ive seen, immigrants (legal and "illegal") or a massive positive for our country.
