Check Georgia's voting history, for example. Other than homeboy Carter twice, and nearby-boy Southerner Clinton once (very narrowly), they haven't touched a Democrat since '60, when they were routinely voting D in Presidential Elections with figures of 60+%. Ditto for Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, etc, and so on.
