This is what people mean when they say being passive can lead to war. It's not so much that the US has gotten weaker, it's that the other countries have gotten stronger. We don't want a planet with a bunch of major players getting into a pissing match, as large scale fighting can, and may, lead to nuclear weapons being involved.
Both China and Russia are using war rhetoric. I don't know of the intentions of the Trump administration when it comes to the Russians, how they are positioning it so they get a desired response out of them. I do believe we will be forced to have a showdown with the Chinese, and it will be dependent on how they choose to respond. China has been a laughing stock on the world stage, until recently. They may actually think they can make a play to become a super power, a rival to the United States. If they think that is the case, war is inevitable.
Make no mistake, we are headed towards a showdown. Either the Chinese will realize their place or one of us will change the course of our actions for a long time to come. And yes, you are correct, the end of one of us could very well happen. We have a gargantuan advantage currently. Let's just hope the Chinese realize that and slow their roll.
