Your takes are really something Dan. Across the board Trump is an authoritarian who holds democracy and civil liberty in contempt. Everything he does should be treated in this context. No apologies. Whenever he fired Comey it would have been because he's a fascist. It's why he does everything he does.

I read that Maxine Waters said in a Jonathan Capehart interview/podcast that they don't have any evidence of Trump colluding with the Russians.

I haven't been able to listen to the podcast yet to confirm and check the context, but if she said that, doesn't that make this Comey firing a non-issue? Or, I don't know, is she just not in a position to have the info?

The podcast is linked here if you want to listen to it.

"Listen to the podcast to hear the rest of her take on Trump and Sessions and the whole 'Auntie Maxine' craze surrounding her."

Two things:
- it doesn't look like Maxine Waters is on any relevant committees that would cause her to have better insider info than any of the ~440 members of the House
- even if she were, that an investigation hadn't found evidence yet doesn't mean it couldn't in the future. This is like saying that Obama firing Comey would have been nbd when he was investigating Hillary's emails because they hadn't found any evidence of wrongdoing yet, and we all know how well that argument would have gone over.

Microbet,

Here is my official statement on James Comey:

"Donald Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey raises serious questions about what his administration is hiding. Why did President Trump fire the person leading the investigation into possible collusion between his campaign and the Russian government? I find it deeply troubling that this decision comes a day after damning testimony by former acting Attorney General Sally Yates on Russia’s ties to the Trump campaign and just days before Comey was scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

“President Trump has repeatedly taken steps to kill inquiries into Russia’s involvement in the U.S. election. It is clear that whomever President Trump handpicks to lead the FBI will not be able to objectively carry out this investigation. We need an independent investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia."
---

I was simply stating that:

1 - There is no point over the last 110 days that Comey could have been fired that would not have elicited a similar response to today (even with such things as the aforementioned by goofyballer related to both recent subpoenas and request for more funds for Russian investigation), and

2 - Personally my level of 'shookness' would have been a bit higher had he immediately fired Comey upon taking office, even though my level of concern over the firing yesterday is still quite high.

Also I completely agree with your points in your last post.

yeah the bolded highlights a part of comeys demise imo. he got way too political. he was over stepping his bounds and getting involved in DOJ business as well as rushing to close very open cases. its hard to validate his rush to shut down the clinton investigation which was clearly demonstrated when he was forced to declare that they had to re open it. he even said they couldn't attribute intent but she broke the law while handing out immunity to her staff who got caught destroying evidence while under subpoena. i thought immunity was offered to further a prosecution but it was offered to people that clearly intentionally destroyed evidence illegally while there was no prosecution

long story short it was all far too political. i get that people are going to draw timing issues and conspiracies which is actually fair, but you have to balance out the fact there was no good time to do this

OK, I didn't check whether she was on a key committee or not. She is severely anti-Trump though, so her comment seems relevant.

I think this has the appearance of impropriety, but highly unlikely to actually be improper. I mean, doesn't the investigation continue without him?

This corruption started when that criminal Loretta Lynch met Clinton on his plane. Were was the outrage then? This is were we need to focus our intention. Comey himself said this is NOT and investigation of Trump. This is left wing desperation that's gonna end up very bad for you and us classical liberals.

Posting because the author worked for Reagan and the two Bushes and also worked for Mitt Romney's campaign in 2012: Don’t Be Complicit, Republicans

Quote:
Among the reasons we can confidently conclude that the president abused his power is that the White House’s explanation for the expulsion of Mr. Comey was transparently false, even ludicrous. The reason the Trump administration gave for firing Mr. Comey this year is the exact same reason for which Mr. Trump praised Mr. Comey last year: the former F.B.I. director’s handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email server.
Quote:
The president wanted Mr. Comey fired all right, but for reasons other than the one that was publicly stated. It does not require great detective skill to see that there is something else is going on here and that the something else involves the F.B.I.’s investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. Indeed, in his letter informing Mr. Comey that he was fired, the president did not mention Mr. Comey’s handling of Mrs. Clinton’s email, but he did mention that Mr. Comey has told him personally not once, not twice, but three times that he wasn’t the subject of the F.B.I.’s investigation. (In fairy tales this is known as “the power of three.”)

Like so much else about the Russia story, this is meant to forestall whatever storm is coming. For the record, it was in March that Mr. Comey confirmed in a congressional hearing that the F.B.I. was investigating links between Trump associates and the Russian government.

It's funny to see you guys on the right continue to not understand that polling was actually very accurate at the national level in 2016.

And that would be completely justified.

1. Comey's actions were in Trump's favor. There's no way under any circumstances at any time that anyone should give the slightest bit of credibility to the idea that Trump would fire Comey for any wrong doing towards Clinton or to protect the reputation of the FBI or anything like that. Obviously he would only fire Comey to protect himself or one of his supporters.

2. Just about everything Trump does should be strenuously objected to and opposed.

The only problem I have with the Russia investigation is that the emoluments seems like a slam dunk and Russia might be a distraction.

Deputy AG Rosenstein threatened to resign after the Trump admin cast him as the reason Comey was fired, when actually it was already decided

lolol this story just keeps getting better

Quote:
The president already had decided to fire Comey, according to this person. But in the meeting, several White House officials said Trump gave Sessions and Rosenstein a directive: to explain in writing the case against Comey.
Quote:
Rosenstein threatened to resign after the narrative emerging from the White House on Tuesday evening cast him as a prime mover of the decision to fire Comey and that the president acted only on his recommendation, said the person close to the White House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Here's something not related to Comey: Trump administration's immigration restrictions could be a boon for Canada's AI industry

Quote:
Trends in actual immigration will take time to show up conclusively, but the early evidence of a Trump effect is most apparent in a field like artificial intelligence, where Canada has been at the forefront of innovation and is seeking to build a large A.I. industry.

Not only are Canadian A.I. start-ups like Botler AI now building on interest in immigration and on homegrown talent, but major American technology companies, including Google, Microsoft and IBM, have also been adding to their A.I. research teams in Canada.
Quote:
Canada has well-funded programs intended not only to lure A.I. experts to the country, but also to persuade A.I. researchers, educated at Canadian universities, to remain in Canada rather than depart for Silicon Valley, as so many have done before.

The nation’s policy makers also want to persuade expatriate engineers and entrepreneurs to return to Canada — and the political climate in the United States has influenced some to do so.

There was an article earlier today that German American Jews were reclaiming their duel citizenship in Germany* because they felt afraid of the raising tide of anti semitism in the US

*Apparently it's in the German Constitution that any descendents of Jews who were forced to flee Germany because of WW2 can claim citizenship

Maybe some fringe groups have taken their cue to act out but their is no real antisemitic swelling right now. The person who was calling in those threats to Jewish schools in the U.S. turned out to be a Jewish Israeli (dual U.S. citizen).

Quote:
An intensive investigation spanning multiple countries culminated on Thursday in the arrest of the 18-year-old suspect, who holds dual Israeli and American citizenship, and his father. The teenager’s lawyer said he had a brain tumor that could affect his behavior.
Tumor? Ok.

If Jews are taking their option back to Germany it is because this place is sucking for everyone. Applications to graduate schools in America are down, and applications to Canadian schools (including from Americans) are up. This isn't because of a sudden onset of anti-grad student sentiment from which students are fleeing. It's because this place sucks.
