Wil - 2 day timeout from all content threads for repeated low content posts and for making an issue of the posters.

In case anybody wonders, Chezlaw and I had a discussion and this is our joint decision. Sometimes Chezlaw will issue the sanction, and sometimes I will. What time it is in the various parts of the world may influence which of us makes the announcement.

It's another in a long line of verbal gaffes that display extreme stupidity coming from a supposedly intelligent man.

As far as this particular incident, discussing slavery in any terms other than calling it one of the worst abominations in American history will never end well for the person making the statement.
03-06-2017 , 11:58 PM
What part was stupid? According to Webster and his friend Merriam slaves fall under the broad definition of immigrants.

I don't think he was denying slavery was a huge mistake. Do you or others think Carson is a huge fan of slavery? Does he really need to go out of his way to say the idea of slavery is disgusting every time he talks about it? At some point can't we assume an intelligent black man in the U.S. is not pro-slavery?
03-07-2017 , 12:13 AM
How many ****ing people you know use the word immigrants when talking about slavery?

You're missing the entire point tho and I'm too tired to explain common sense to you.

Who said he's pro-slavery? Discussing things with you is impossible.

Here is the quote:

Quote:
“That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,’’ he said. “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”
Referring to slaves as "immigrants" is a gaffe but to me the bolded is the worst part. Uh, no, that's not exactly how slavery worked.

I tried really hard to come up with a devil's advocate position on this but couldn't. Yep, Ben Carson is a certifiable moron. Great, he's leading HUD.

A typical knee injury is not a pre-existing condition.

Diabetes, cancer, high boood pressure, a large number of diseases, RA, and much more are pre-Exsisting conditions.

High risk pools are abject failures. We shouldn't have any pools at all. All pools do is make money for insurance companies, which we don't need in the first place.

This 1 time I was in Canada and cut my foot, which got infected. I went to a doctor but when I saw his prescription for antibiotics I said, No, Unacceptable! The way US doctors do chicken-scratch signatures on prescriptions for common drugs is Much Better!

Anyhow, I ended up losing my foot to amputation but that a small price to pay for myopic jingoism.

Ok. so 1 little fonzy got cooled out.

They thought AO was humblebragging about his parents having Fat Stax Of Canadian Currency and then they chased that ball right into the street, traffic be damned.

PROTIP: Only children and those with personality disorders brag about their parents' money and I'd venture to say this applies to their own money as well.

5ive, just remember that Juan is highly educated and only doesn't want to talk about where his two degrees were from and what they are in because it would be bragging.

2outs said not mentioning slavery was bad when talking about slavery is a gaffe. I was just pointing out that it is unreasonable to assume that Carson actually doesn't think slavery was bad.

I think the left is blowing up his quote to make it sound bad. He's right that slaves were technical immigrants.

That's what makes you a deplorable and the rest of us decent human beings, because we don't look at that quote and say "jesus, what could people possibly be taking issue with here?" like someone totally and completely ignorant of history would.

NYT has HUD's public response in their article about it:

Quote:
The Department of Housing and Urban Development was stunned by the uproar and spent part of the afternoon responding to the news media on Twitter. In a statement, it said critics were watching only a short clip from a 30-minute speech and were viewing the remarks in bad faith.

“This is the most cynical interpretation of the secretary’s remarks to an army of welcoming HUD employees,” the department said in a statement. “No one honestly believes he equates voluntary immigration with involuntary servitude!”
I dunno, have they met our friend bahbah here?

Poor mickey, blowing away any assumption HUD might have made about the intelligence of the people that would read Carson's quote.

I didn't do that.

"Immigrant" isn't the best word to use because it implies the move was voluntary.

But I agree with you, this "gaffe" seems like a stretch at best.

So because some people don't understand that the definition of an immigrant doesn't necessarily imply the move was voluntary we should shame a politician for making a point where he isn't being factually incorrect.

This. Am I supposed to think every single time before I make a public announcement? At what point will we allow good men such as myself to spew whatever drivel they want while still maintaining the pretense that we're smart?

It's political correctness gone mad.

Did I say that? I agree with you that this is a nothing, but "immigrant" is definitely not the best word.
