I didn't see many counter protests at the Inauguration Rallies or the Woman's March. There was the Deplora-ball, but I don't think any of the counter-attendees even engaged in civil disobedience. Same with DAPL.

Seemed to work.

All I heard all weekend was that the neo-Nazis at the rally only numbered "30 or 40" and that they're just an infinitesimal percentage of Trump voters and that mainstream conservatives had no interest in them. (You're close, with a little hyperbole It's not the largest peaceful march in the United States history. The DC numbers were below the 2013 Right to Life numbers, and more people turned out Worldwide for the Cubs World Series win than the Women's marchers. So, meh.)

Other than Madonna wishing to blow up the White House and Ashley Judd making a complete fool of yourself, the women dressed up in their pussy hats, the Conservatives used their speech to mock them for being fools, and nobody got hurt. Seems to be a good example on how to handle things.
