It's much more nuanced than non-Brits would be aware of.

He's certainly not openly a Stalinist, but the history of the Left since the 1980s here is such that Stalinists have rarely paraded their allegiances in public.

Even Milne (who's questioned the number of deaths under Stalin) is supported by centre Left ex-colleagues at The Guardian as a critic of Stalin, though some of his (and McDonnell's) rhetoric does smack heavily of the SWP.

You'd be able to understand this better by extrapolating from the few years when the US has experienced terrorism on its own soil, and the panic and pandemonium even that small level of terrorism (per capita) has caused there.
