I remember arguing about what he said ITT and there were quite a few people who thought what he said was racist. I'd say ever liberal who posted ITT at that time thought it was racist or was too ashamed at his/her own party to step in and acknowledge how stupid/gullible/wrong they were.
His statement, while not specifically being "all Mexicans are rapists", was still offensive and bigoted. And in the same sense that you feel we liberals heard what we want to hear, so did conservatives, whose interpretation of that statement was 50% "those damn illegals are destroying our country" and 50% handwaving away the disgustingness of the "rapist" part.
I'd love to hear your defense of:
- outright lies about seeing "thousands" of Muslims in NJ celebrating on 9/11;
- ReTweeting a white supremacist-originated meme with completely false crime statistics that indicated virtually all homicides are committed by African-Americans;
- unfurling an "LGBTQ's For Trump" rainbow flag late in his campaign during a Colorado stop, followed by appointment of the most anti-LGBTQ Cabinet in history and his attempted pushing of a "religious freedom" EO that would destroy LGBTQ rights
- yelling "look at my African-American over there" at a rally
You can only handwave away so much.
