Like, a really, really dumb point about "Obama and Clinton did it too" re: Rwanda/Syria would have been really dumb, but just so much less so then going to bat for turning away boats of Jewish refugees and interning American citizens.
03-05-2017 , 02:23 PM
It blows my mind that we live in a world where so many people will say: "Well so and so did this or so and so did something similar in the past" when trying to justify obviously bad current actions.

Accountability is a lost art.

Here is where you are confused, Dis. The trumpkins here don't think that Japanese internment or turning away Jewish refugees during the holocaust was a bad idea in the past. They disagree. They're fans of both the action AND in some cases the result.

It is definately unfortunate that Jews were turned away. I never said this was a good thing. It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback 73 years later. If you were there in that moment you may have had a different opinion.

Yet somehow you can't see how shortsightedness similar to that of pre-wwI might be erroneous today.
03-05-2017 , 03:06 PM
Unfortunate? Is that the most you can say about it?
03-05-2017 , 03:09 PM
He can't muster the words to say it was wrong. Wonder why?
03-05-2017 , 03:13 PM
I mean, we live in a country where gay marriage wasn't a thing until just recently, and everyone is horrified that America didn't throw its doors open to people against public sentiment and right after the great depression 70+ years ago. Obama and hillary Clinton didn't support gay marriage just a few years ago!

Lol @ people. How come we don't take in 5 million refugees RIGHT NOW, amirite?

You people have lost your minds. Context means something. Judging people yesterday with today's morality is loltastic. The founding fathers didn't address slavery, should we just throw away the Constitution because America is racist? Bill Clinton would be considered a raging bigot today.

mong calling turning Jews away during the Holocaust is like saying it was "regrettable' - as though it was desirable, but with some negative aspects.

Yes, why doesn't the US (pop. > 300M) take in 5 million refugees now?
03-05-2017 , 03:18 PM
Yeah, just ship the whole of Syria over.

**** the vetting, waste of time anyway.

I answered this already. Pay attention.
03-05-2017 , 03:21 PM
No one pays much attention to your drivel, wil. Most of us scan it, find the obviously ******ed sentence and reply to it (takes < 10 seconds) while laughing at your stupidity.

The US has about 320 million people. Let's bring in 300 million refugees who can't speak or write the language and need state support. What could go wrong?

No one's suggesting this, wil. DUH

Bad things happen when you don't follow the two rules to immigration. We are human beings and are naturally adverse to change, but especially drastic, quick change. History proves time and time again really bad things happen when you do that.

But hey, jalfrezi from 2+2 thinks it's a good idea! **** it let's give it a shot, right?

The unread wil318466, proud of eschewing books, likes to tell more informed people what "history proves". Clown

If you let in 5 million Syrians that would certainly be regrettable.

You guys are starting to bore me. I'll be working on my fantasy football and poker more, so I won't be on here as much. Good luck.

Wil and Mong, both 0/2 on saying Japanese internment and turning away Jews was the wrong thing to do while inventing stupid strawmen like "let's accept 300m immigrants."

Wil, I'v researched the amount of people waiting on visas to the USA. What do you think the number is? How many do you think are approved per year?
03-05-2017 , 04:09 PM
I have a vague idea of the number of immigrants a year. What difference does that make, and why do you bother asking me?

I doubt it would take very long to look up. What's your point ?
03-05-2017 , 04:15 PM
Well, the first point is that a ton of people don't want to live in the USA. Of everyone who wants to come, under 10% are allowed in per year.

So, we don't need to invent strawmen of tens or hundreds of millions wanting to live in the USA when it's so far removed from reality. Nearly 1/4 of all people applying for a Visa are mexican residents seeking to join their families. Next, is residents of the Philippines hoping to do the same thing. After that, it is people from India and it is nearly all work Visas.
03-05-2017 , 04:19 PM
Wait. Work visas or permanent residence? I mean, the numbers are on the state department's website.
03-05-2017 , 04:21 PM
A combination of, Wil.

I would venture to guess nearly every person on this planet would choose to live in the US if they could. Just because thet haven't applied doesn't mean they don't wanna.
