Now scratch cards, they're ****. Might hate them more than slot machines.

I did read a fun article about lottery strat not long back though. About commonly picked numbers and how to increase your share of a prize if you're lucky enough to win.
The two big lotteries here are the Powerball and Mega Millions. Powerball is ~296 million to 1 for the jackpot, Mega Millions is ~259 million to 1.

I don't generally buy lottery tickets but I've bought them for some of the bigger jackpots. There was a >$1bn Powerball jackpot last year.

Regarding the commonly picked numbers, yeah when not too lazy I've picked non "random looking" strings of high numbers like 38 39 40 42 43 44.

I don't remember the details but picking anything over 31 was a plus because people use birthday numbers. 13 was one of the most frequently picked numbers because people think nobody will pick it or for the love of irony. 1,2,3,4,5,6 would split the jackpot a few hundred ways.

It didn't mention moving country for better pot odds though.

I'm going to have to ask you to persuade me (and others) that we should make fatism off limits.

It seems way down the list to me. Of the things that are allowed here, ageism is far higher up the list imo.

The random numbers option hurts that strategy.

Only +ev numbers are the same ones as someone you really don't like.

Well it's not like you're going to pick a number that nobody else does, but as long as some are picked less frequently than others it's better to use those.

Just as a general heads up I have some unexpected IRL stuff to deal with for a bit, and then i'm traveling for a week so I may be scarce until the 15th.

i don't want Fatism off limits, quite the contrary. Just trying to make a point that perhaps you've explained away in the past but I'm not a regular browser here so I've missed it.

Politics requires a healthy dose of pragmatism. Politics is also always in progress so I don't accept the failure to do everything as a counterargument to doing something.

That's it really. I'm not defending fatism or ageism as good things.

That's a cute quote that I'd agree with if we were talking about picking up litter or reducing carbon emissions, but it's problematic when we're talking about 'isms,' for fairly obvious reasons.

I'm not sure what you mean. For example, homophobia and ageism are both problems but homophobia is both the bigger political issue and the more tractable. Tackling homophobic posts is in no way diminished by ignoring ageism for the moment.
08-04-2017 , 02:02 PM
Well of course ignoring ageism doesn't diminish tackling homophobic posts, it elevates it.

I noticed you have a problem with using '******' as a pejorative. I also assume you don't have a problem with 'idiot' 'imbecile' or 'moron.'
08-04-2017 , 02:14 PM
We've done this before. They might have the same technical meanings but 'idiot' etc are commonly used pejoratives that are used in a non-technical way and sometimes light-heartedly, unlike '******'.

I'm not sure it elevates it but it doesn't in any way diminish it as a good thing.

As for particular insulting words, the issue I have with them reflects the concern for those with genuine conditions. It's not about it offending me or the person being insulted. It seems very well accepted that '******' is far more objectionable than the others in your list so that's the one I'm trying to stop people using.

I thought we all agreed that this kind of modding sucked and we were going to something site-rules based.

I didn't think we agreed to keep the "PC rule" and just not call it the "PC rule", because that doesn't actually accomplish anything.

I've also never understood why it's fine to make fun of the moderately stupid and really stupid, but the really really stupid are an off-limits protected class. Makes no sense.
08-04-2017 , 04:33 PM
Making fun of people who have a birth defect is pretty classless (Trump and the disabled journalist); making fun of people who are a bit dim or have made a mistake is OK.

That's not how words work completely. But is a people issue, more than a word issue.

Listen to the person who confronted Anne Coulter about it years ago. Google it or whatever.

Right, but JiggyMac's 85 IQ is also a birth defect, it's just less severe.
08-04-2017 , 05:08 PM
It's not great to make fun of people for being stupid if you think they actually are stupid but it's not the same as when it reaches the level of being a disability.

There's the usual paradoxes etc that can be thrown at where we draw the lines.

And you being unable to reason out other people's IQ levels is just plain ignorance. But hey, more power to you.

That's just because people have been using 'imbecile' to mean something different for a longer period of time. Since I was a kid, people have used '******' similarly, and for the users of this forum its meaning is clear.

Of course it elevates it, you've deemed it worthy of special attention, and don't care about the fat ****s.

Very well-accepted by you and a few others who decide to be offended by it.

And how are any real ******s affected by some idiot (heh) here using it to insult some other idiot who thinks arguing about politics on a poker forum is a worthwhile pursuit?

So your IQ is higher than 85. Sure, OK. Most people do think you're trolling anyhow.

That said, what are you gaining by pretending your IQ maxes out at 85?
