It isn't so much about the parables (which i agree with you are profound); it's about the language. The words that Tolkien uses are carefully crafted and frequently show up in SAT and GRE exams. In fact, he created entire new languages that follow grammatically correct rules and syntax. They don't call it the greatest epic in fantasy fiction for nothing.
Grisham is just fluff. Enjoyable fluff, but fluff nonetheless.
