Never take sides against America, brother. That's not how True Americans behave. True Americans pretend to love soccer when the US is kicking butt and casually ignore it any other time.

Even when we lose we're still victorious! USA #1!

I'm pretty sure the USA can beat Belgium. Argentina will be a tougher row to hoe.

There are excellent hippie reasons to dig the world cup. World peace through kicking balls!

I agree. All the trip reports I read of Americans visiting Brazil for the WC speak of the camaraderie present among the rival fans. They drink together and share chants. It's very healthy.

Now we can go back to not pretending we care about futbol for four years, just like everyone is a big horse racing junkie every year until the kentucky derby winner loses, and then everyone is like "what's a horse?"
I want it to be popular enough that I can still get a good bit of European games on American TV, but I don't want it to be popular enough that more and more Americans continue getting involved with it in one form or another.

The best thing soccer haters have going is that ESPN televises a lot more MLS games now, nothing better to kill people's interest in the game than to watch that garbage.

MLS has gotten a lot better and will continue to do so. There may be some labor problems soon though.

IF YOU DON'T RAISE THE SALARY CAP TO 3 MILLION WE'RE STRIKING!!!!!
06-27-2014 , 12:27 AM
MLS is definitely better than it was when it started 18 years ago. There are maybe 2 guys in the entire league who could start for a major European club, and one of them is about to enter the downside of his career. MLS is hot garbage, and that's not a bad thing.

We've gone over this before, but the salary cap isn't that small. Individual players get paid more than that.

David Villa, Bradley, Dempsey, Defoe, Di Vaio for starters. Probably Kaka soon. Besler transfer rumors are pretty widespread. When you look at the current USMNT roster, 15 of 23 play or played in the MLS.

That all misses the point though. As fun as it would be to skip all the middle steps and instantly be able to compete with the top 4 leagues, that simply isn't how the world works. The MLS will probably take another 10-15 years before it breaks into a top 10 worldwide league. The point is that it has stayed on that path for 2 decades now.

You should really check out some MLS games btw. Specifically, seattle games. They're legitimately fun to watch.

I'll start following MLS once they give San Antonio a franchise.

there's a soccer player named Kaka?

Is there any particular reason that the professional soccer in the US isn't set up I a league system? Is there any chance that that will ever change?
06-27-2014 , 05:33 AM
set up I? You mean have lower level leagues like the UK? Probably not enough players or money or interest.
06-27-2014 , 10:44 AM
It already is a low level league. You want a super low level league? We have that, it's called middle school soccer

I assume you mean why no pyramid?

It makes the MLS a better investment for owners.

Those leagues already exist. What makes the US different is that there isn't a promotion/regulation between those leagues?
06-27-2014 , 10:59 AM
Would be pretty cool to see a middle school team promoted to MLS or an MLS team relegated to middle school play
06-27-2014 , 11:14 AM
you already used that troll
