depends on the type of engineer and the location and nature of the job, just like anything else...

I guess it is. US federal tax code is uber complicated. Tax returns thus vary widely. Then there's taxation at the state level and those rates vary widely as well. I live in a state that does not have a state income tax for instance.

Oil boom ftw. Wonder what North Dakota is like.

You were charged a huge markup for something in an airport? Well I never!

Next thing you know you'll walk into a movie theater and be charged five dollars for a large soda! Society these days!

McDonalds Protesters
Quote:
More than 100 McDonald’s employees and some labor and clergy members were arrested after protesting for increased wages near the fast-food chain’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.

The event, the latest in a series of demonstrations by workers demanding $15-an-hour pay and the right to form a union, began at 1 p.m. local time yesterday, on the eve of McDonald’s Corp.’s shareholder meeting.

About 2,000 protesters, including about 325 McDonald’s workers in restaurant uniforms, stormed though the company’s campus entrance at Jorie Boulevard and Kroc Drive in Oak Brook, according to the organizers, holding signs that said, “We Are Worth More” and “My Union My Voice.” The Oak Brook Police Department estimated the number was 1,000 to 1,500.
$15 for McDs jobs coming soon ?

Why the hell would I want to work at McDonald's?

From this article the cost of a meal for 2 is $50. If you make $29 per hour and taxed at 35%, that means you are making $19 an hour or so. A meal for 2 in the states might be $12. Looking at the Big Mac Index and references online it might be $10 for a meal. I wonder how the 25% VAT plays in. But, in the end communism does not work. We need to end the minimum wage to compete with China.

The invisible hand has a tough grip. Whatever you do to try and improve the wages of citizens, it will ultimately result in less wages and freedom considering society as a whole. Unions are the same, it makes people poorer. The only way unions and minimum wages can help the people if they ultimately destroy unions and government influences in the market. This includes real estate laws that allow people like Warren Buffett to control 1000s of acres while many poor are landless.

You guys should check out the wages in Norway instead. For all you students in here just going to Norway over the summer working pretty much anything for 2-3 months can net you like 10-15k$.
05-24-2014 , 12:53 PM
Yeah, but how much will it cost to get a passport and fly to Norway? Cuttin' into much profits!

I have no idea about passport but a roundtrip to Norway is probably around 1k$.

Instead of working your ass off for minimum wage you get to make real money and also travel to another country.
05-24-2014 , 02:12 PM
Yeah, sure, there's that. But, I mean, like, in America, gun violence is basically an everyday part of life. I'm sure some other country must have it even worse. Too dangerous to travel abroad imo
05-26-2014 , 01:11 PM
America where economy is based on big mac index lol

guess what, in europe people knows how to cook and there's other source of nutrition.

There's even real restaurant cheaper than a big mac meal !!!!!!!
05-26-2014 , 03:20 PM
Wth is wrong with Europeans that McDonalds is even in business if there are other cheaper options? That's the only reason anyone here eats there is it's half the price of anything else.
05-26-2014 , 04:19 PM
People enjoy kitsch, ldo

Also, in Europe, just because you may smoke doesn't mean you're a smoker. People there aren't necessarily as all-or-nothing as Americans are. They can eat at McDs once a month and be fine, whereas if you're an American who eats any McDs, then you likely eat there 5 times a week or more.
05-26-2014 , 05:19 PM
I don't know anyone that eats at McDonalds 5 times a week.

But the point is, why would anyone eat at McDonalds ever if there is real food that's cheaper? The entire point of McDonalds is you can't afford to eat elsewhere.
05-27-2014 , 05:00 AM
You can get food as cheap as McDonald's (or other fast food) if you want, but people choose fast food because

A. It's cheap
B. It's convenient (already made, stores are everywhere)
C. Most of it tastes pretty good

That's a hard 1,2,3 combo to beat for people on a budget and in a hurry.
