Politics is about what you want the world to look like, people have sincere disagreements about that. Rubin's preferred state of things is not mine, so yes, he fails the "purity test" of not being liberal. Do you want me to call you a leftist? I don't want to be called a conservative. Reasonable people can differ about where people's views fall but I think there should be a consensus is that it's not purely a matter of self-identification. I get that one version didn't happen. And I get that neither upsets me. And I get that if a professor then went to the press about how awful it was to change it one year that that would come across as petty and stupid.

I get that this might look silly to an American right-winger, wondering why the officers haven't just gunned him down, but I'd guess that the outcome of this video was likely to be that nobody got seriously hurt. So yeah, better.

That isn't really what happened. He sent an email to faculty and staff disagreeing with the changed Day of Absence. The email was later published in the campus newspaper. Then there were student protests against him. Then he went to the press (or press went to him, who knows).

It's always fun when a guy rants against "identity politics" for page after page and then is genuinely stunned that you aren't obligated to agree with someone who is gay/black/whatever.

Okay, that's not what I thought the NYT article was saying, but fair enough.
