Hid in business school through the rest of the recession playing to supplement my income during school and full-time in-lieu of summer internship. Used poker and playing the WSOP heavily in my essays, dont think Id have gotten into school without that.

Signed a job offer about a month before Black Friday and have probably played less than 500 hands since combined online and live. Starting to read and sharpen my game back up again for if/when regulated poker comes to my state.

I owe a lot to poker, no chance Id have been able to just take a 3.5 year vacation (including school) and resume working in the job I have now if I had just bummed around for 3.5 years. Poker paid the bills, but more importantly gave me the chance take time off without completely wrecking my career as well as a hook to get into school.
How did this work exactly? I have wanted to work my poker exploits into my CV in a meaningful way but worry that it will do more harm than good.

Don't do it unless you absolutely have to. I had to do it for med school apps, and it didn't go well at all.

LOL at all you poor saps... I've been self employed for 20+ years. Never went to college but have taught 3 semesters of college. School finally didn't hire me back when they figured out that I was teaching kids to quit. The last job app I filled out was nearly 2 decades ago, the last person to ask about my job experience got PW3D, and hired me anyway.

I would have to be able to make considerably more being self employed than I can working within my field. Self employment taxes are brutal. I have done a significant amount of consulting work but at the end of the day when you add all of the unpaid work that goes in to getting clients and the extra 8+% you pay in taxes I have a hard time justifying self employment.

You don't pay an extra 8% in taxes, but yeah it's annoying to see both sides of entitlements coming straight out of your pocket instead of your employer hiding half the cost.
