Why do so many people that thinks re -entry is good? There is only so much dead money in the prize pool. The percentage of competent players that re-enter vs bad players that re-enter is heavily weighted towards good players.

Most the re-entry will occur during the period in which a competent player will still have an edge over the field. When the rare person enters for just a few big blinds they are often close enough to the money where they might have to only win a couple all ins to cash. Having people enter in short also hurts the experienced player because shorter stacks cap the range that a good player can open with. Often these late entrants are just doing it because of the overlay or because they can enter a few spots from the money.

So what does this mean?

It means that players can have the option to enter in a tougher field multiple times. Which means they would have a multiple chances at less EV.

So basically we are just basically paying more rake to fight over the same money.

In addition to that the recreational player will rarely get a big score( which they will eventually give back so it doesn't matter). If a recreational player occasionally goes on a deep run or gets a win they will keep playing on this site. If they never do good they simple play on a different site. The one site that pays people out quickly and doesn't have re-entry is the most popular site in the US.

This is bad for both regs and recreational players because regs make less money (do to high rake and new players choosing other sites) and recreational players, who are playing because they enjoy the game will not enjoy the game on this site.

Having some tourneys having some re entry is understandable. A tourney like the 12.5k or the 50k having two hours of re-entry is probably fine. Sites need to have some big prize pools to attract new players player. These tourneys should be the exception though.

The Beast also makes the cash games real bad so once these new players come to this site and don't have fun on cash tables because the games are filled with good tight regs they won't stay and occasionally blast off some money in a tourney. If they do happen to play in a tourney they won't have a chance and will eventually leave the site. It works the same way with people that are mostly tourney player that occasionally play cash. These things kinda go hand in hand but its a little bit out of the scope of this thread.

Well, you make some good points, but with a 20% average payout field, I can't justify playing in WPN's tournaments without re-entry... and with the relatively small field on WPN, there's no way they're going to meet these GTD prize pools w/o re-entry.

IMO, re-entry has to stay.

Is it possible that the reason why the site can't make big GTDs is because with the additional rake everyone is paying and a system that only benefits the very top LAG players is because of re entry in the first place?

When players that were break even play under the 3 hour re entry system they become losing players. So eventually the will find a site that they are winning players or breaking even on. WPN loses that traffic and the GTDs can't grow.

The sites that don't have re entry seem to be doing the best.

Also per my disclaimer I don't think it would be a huge deal to have re entry on a few of the bigger tourneys like the daily 12.5k and the 50k.

Even one hour of re entry is fine since most strong players will not be stacking off for 50 -100 bbs in a incorrect stop. This could still help them get bigger GTDs and not kill the player pools. Three hours is just a straight up money grab or a decision that was not though out properly.
