You can do so. However, exchanges tend to frown upon gambling transactions. Many frown so hard that they shut down your account if they catch you making gambling transactions. Hence why an intermediary wallet is recommended.
If speed isn't terribly important to you you can use blockchain.info as your intermediary wallet. There, you can set custom fees which are much lower than the recommended. This will greatly reduce your cost. However, this is where the speed part comes in, it will increase the wait time on confirmations thus exposing you to more bitcoin price volatility as it may take 5 hours, 24 hours, whatever to confirm your cheaper transaction.
