Author Meets Critics: An LC Thread for Haters Author Meets Critics: An LC Thread for Haters

Post your LC or more general complaints about social science (or me?) here! More likely: have them moved here.

Classics include
- "Social science is not real science"
- "Activist SJW feminist sociologists are destroying Academia/America/The World

Actually that might cover 90% of it. Feel free to add entries.

Note that HC complaints on these topics may be appropriate in other threads, I'm not trying to say all your complaints are bad and you should feel bad. Just, you know, most of them.

lol I wasn't aware that this got posted. I was to include a poll, and after I tried previewing it said something like "invalid forum specified", so I thought it was already over!

fyi the options were:
  1. Because it is a science!
  2. Because it is a weird science!
  3. AOC!
  4. Binge "The Wire" 5x in a row and you know!
  5. ...well they call Poker a sport...
  6. Lizards!
  7. ...something something sjw
  8. Basterd

The whole social science is not real science “debate” is so silly. It’s nothing more than people having little to no understanding of the philosophy of science. The social sciences use the same epistemological framework as the so called hard sciences. The differences in reliance on inductive vs deductive reasoning are clearing in the category of degree rather than kind.

As for some elements of the social sciences (or historically literary theory) being extremely toxic to academia, I am much more charitable to some of these views. Their quicksand epistemology seems largely baseless and their extreme insistence on recognizing all views, while on the surface laudable, is easily exposed as seriously dangerous with even a little intellectual exploration.

Stay tuned, sounds like more of this discussion is planned by well named.

This place is going to be way over my head.

Sorry

Feel free to ask questions, poke holes, etc.

Well Named,

I am a previously banned poster that Mat recently gave permission to make a new account to post in restricted forums. I have had conversations with you on a variety of subjects over the years on various accounts, most recently Lazarus99, with no major issues.

I would gladly discuss critiques of social sciences as they are currently constructed, and whether they are valid or not, if you give me permission to post in this forum.

If not, no hard feelings.

You are welcome to participate in this playground. Obviously if I think you post something which crosses a line I'll moderate it.

As long as they are discussing Foucault as an overrated hack. We will also accept pictures of lions disemboweling Derrida.

I've only read one Foucault book but I liked it. Ain't nobody got time for Derrida. I guess we'll get to this soon. Are you writing the OP or me?

Why don’t you and I’ll chime in.

One interesting topic I’ve thought about, but not deeply, is can a line be drawn from postmodernism to today’s political climate and the idea of “fake news” and “my facts”.

Cool. When you pick up the scraps that fall from the table you can dumb them down for me.

I have this idea that at the end of the playground, I'm going to collect all this text, process the discussions, revise, expand, and then probably publish a bunch of this on an actual blog. So the threads are sort of like rough drafts for that. The idea is for it to be accessible to people without any background, kind of like a "Sociology 101 filtered through my fevered brain" sort of thing. So, with that in mind I would love feedback on where things are unclear.

I remember when I was younger I read a lot of popular books on physics. Brian Greene in particular, and a bunch of others. Although Feynman is probably my favorite physics writer. I think some other sciences have done a better job with that kind of popular writing than sociologists have. So that's my inspiration, if it makes sense.

If I was very hip it should of course be a series of Youtube videos instead, but... I'm not.

3 questions that may or may not be appropriate here.

violence on tv. cartoons movies video games...

gay rights movement and accomplishments compared to other groups fighting for equality.

insane amounts of money raised to advertise political campaigns and why some of that raised isn't simply given to the homeless, etc...

It's Friday night and I'm a wee bit inebriated but I think you forgot the questions
04-19-2019 , 10:21 PM
topics. last one is a question.
04-19-2019 , 11:11 PM
Pretty good topics. I'd have to do some research.

In other news, Mrs. Well named said to me, somewhat out of the blue, "you know a lot of sociology is just middle class people trying to explain the poor to the rich."

And then I said "Yeah? Who explains the rich to the poor?"

To which she replied, "C. Wright Mills and Domhoff." Then a pause. "But, the rich don't like to be studied."

I merely pass on the wisdom I receive.
