The top league in League of Legends continues with the OGN Champions Summer 2013. Featuring 16 teams this tournament will be essential in determining who grabs the 3 KR spots for S3 World Finals.
Format: 16 team group stage, teams play a bo2 against each other - top 2 advance to the knockout round.
Group A:
1st MVP Ozone 2-1 (5-1) Qualified for Knockout Phase
2nd Jin Air Greenwings Falcons 1-0-1 (2-2)
3rd Xenics Storm 0-2-1 (2-4) Relegated to NLB league
4th Xenics Blast 0-1-1 (1-3)
A pretty weak group overall, the defending champions MVP Ozone dropped only a meaningless game to Storm in progressing. Xenics Blast would have to defeat Jin Air Falcons twice to move into second place, but considering their inept performance so far and Repeared's Jin Air Falcons squad looking pretty strong, don't expect that to happen
Group B:
1st Chunnam Techno University 1-1 (3-1) Qualified for Knockout Phase
2nd CJ Entus Blaze 1-1 (3-1) Qualified for Knockout Phase
3rd NaJin Black Sword 0-3 (3-3) Relegated to NLB League
4th Jin Air Greenwings Stealths 0-2-1 (1-5) Relegated to NLB League
CTU was the surprise of the group stage as they were able to draw NaJin Sword in their opening set, then dispatched the bottomfeeding Jin Air Stealths to qualify for the Knockout round even before their game against CJ Blaze. CTU shows flashes of solid play but is rather inconsistent. CJ Entus Blaze seems like they might have recovered from their 0-3 shellacking by MVP Ozone in the Spring finals, and progressed easily.
The fall of NaJin Sword has been impressive. From Champions of OGN Winter to bowing out at the quarterfinals of OGN Spring, to now being eliminated in the group phase. Maknoons former team looks like they will face changes, though they still have a shot at being an automatic qualifier for s3 finals.
Group C
1st SK Telecom T1 2-0 (4-0) Qualified for Knockout Phase
2nd MVP Blue 0-2 (2-2)
3rd NaJin White Shield 0-1-1 (1-3)
4th Incredible Miracle 2 0-1-1 (1-3)
SK Telecom T1 cruised through the group phase, that has some decent teams in it, however none of them are good enough to contain Faker, who put on a clinic in the mid lane.
The second qualifier will likely come from the winner of the IM2 vs. NaJin White Shield matchup, however it could come down to a messy 3 way tiebreak. None of the 3 teams are a serious threat to accomplish much outside of the group phase.
Group D
1st CJ Entus Frost 1-1 (3-1)
2nd KT Rolster Bullets 1-1 (3-1)
3rd Maximum impact Gaming Blitz (1-0-1) (2-2)
4th Incredible Miracle 0-2 (0-4)
First thing that has to be said about this group is how bad IM2 are. They are the VES of the OGN league, just pathetic.
CJ Frost has a tricky final game against MiG Blitz that should not be underestimated, but all Frost needs to do is win 1 game of a bo2. KT Rolster Bullets will dispatch IM when they play, in all but certainty.
The Favourites
The Defending Champs
MVP Ozone are a team that is not well known by most westerners, however they are the reigning champs, knocking off CJ Entus Blaze 3-0 in the Spring Final. They are a well rounded team with the star of the team probably being Dade who was voted MVP of the last season. MVP Ozone can really be considered CLG on steroids, because for a Korean team they have a decidedly North American flavour - they love playing for the late game and letting their star AD Carry imp take over. MVP Ozone should not be underestimated and will be looking to defend their championship with pride.
The Up and Comers
SKT Telecom T1 are primarily known as the team that contains Faker the midlane prodigy. While they do have the reputation as a one person team, their bot lane combo of Piglet and Poohmandu is solid. The only question for this team is if the rest of them can keep up with Faker's prodigious talents, because when he gets the chance to shine it is truly amazing to watch.
The Old Flame
CJ Blaze are one of the old hands of the LoL scene in Korea, it seems like Ambition and Lustboy have been around forever. CJ Blaze recently was on a 15 game winning streak before being soundly defeated by MVP Ozone in the finals. Flame is considered by many to be the best top laner in Korea and Ambition is as solid as ever in the mid lane. CptJack, once thought to be one of the best AD carries in the world is probably due to be benched for Hermes, who isn't anything special himself. Some may question them, but they are still Blaze and are still a threat.
The Savvy Veterans
The team of the best support in the world, Madlife, Frost has a history of not being able to win the 'big' games since they defeated CLG.eu in the Summer of 2012. The team is solid up and down the roster, and now even likable since Woong has left the team. Cloudtemplar has had some troubles in transitioning to the jungle changes but with Shy in the top lane and the ever emerging 'GankedbyMom' playing out of his mind in midlane, a second OGN trophy could be captured by this team.
The Real Dark Horse
KT Rolster B have an oustanding array of talent. It seems like Insec could not be contained in the jungle and now he has taken his talents to the top lane, where he has proven to be amazing as well. Score and Mafa are an elite level duo lane and KaKaO is probably the best jungler in Korea now that Insec has left that position. KT B don't quite have the experience playing together yet (Insec joined on June 26th) but their play has been incisive and exciting. A fun darkhorse to cheer for.
What are they Playing for
The OGN league will send 3 teams to the Season 3 Finals and they will be determined by circuit points with the top 2 teams receiving automatic berths and the 3rd team being decided at the Korean Regionals with teams 3rd -> 6th earning a chance to qualify.
Current standings
1st NaJin Black Sword - 500 points
2nd MVP Ozone - 420 points
3rd CJ Entus Blaze - 300 points
4th CJ Entus Frost - 300 points
5th KT Rolster Bullets - 200 points
6th SK Telecom T1 - 150 points
7th NaJin White Shield - 120 points
8th MVP Blue - 110 points
Every other team currently has 40 points or less.
How points are awarded
Code:
OGN NLB
1 400 100
2 200 70
3 150 50
4 100 40
5-8 20
9-12 10
Every team that does not reach the semi-finals is sent to the NLB league, in an extremely confusing system....
So what does it mean?
Basically it is all up in the air for the teams that want to avoid what will be the most stacked qualifier in recent memory (considering it might include SKT1, KT Bullets, Blaze and Frost...yikes). A win for any of the 8 teams with 100 or more points will put them into a playoff position at the very least.
