As for Garen, I start Doran's shield on him./QUOTE]

I am neither disagreeing or agreeing that Shield>Blade in this scenario, as I've only played Garen once. But I have an amazing informational link to share about item/gold efficiency. For the sake of this Garen build, gold efficiency-wise, the blade is MUCH better. This is a great way to iron out your builds, or to compare the ones on Mobafire/Solomid as someone was mentioning a few posts up. This is informational gold:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...=CLm220c#gid=0

since I read this, I have tried stacking Rod of Ages on Cho'Gath, and using snowball items when I'm playing against a weak lane, etc. very nice stuff.

So basically the Brutalizer isn't efficient and should be avoided? It has an efficiency of -420.33.

What does (full), (empty), (breakeven) mean?

It's also saying if you're going to be a tank that you should rush to buying the Aegis of the Legion.

Inefficient doesn't mean unusable. It just means that you're spending a bit more for what you're getting when compared to the other items. In the last collumn it often mention what you're paying the extra gold for, so you'll often have to guestimate whether or not the extra cost is worth the extra stats. ie. on the brutalizer it says you're paying the extra 420.33 gold for the penetration/cdr. For 420.33 gold 10% cdr and 15% armor pen seems like a steal.

Full, empty, and breakeven are how many stacks are on the item. A snowball item will often be "full" at 20 stacks, or a Rod of Ages will be full once it stops adding stats over time. Empty is when you just bought the item and it has no stacks yet. Breakeven is how many stacks the item will require for it to hit a non-negative efficiency rating.

Aegis is OP, in regards to gold efficiency, but no need to rush it. If you have it ready for teamfights, though, that efficiency rating is so disgustingly high that it's like you just gave your team thousands of extra gold!

To add onto the thought of Brutalizer being inefficient: it's the most efficient of the penetration items. I just noticed that all of the penetration items are inefficient, goldwise. Also, I just noticed that the only stats they are considering in the efficiency ratings are AP, mana, AD, Lifesteal, HP, armor, MR, Crithit%, and AS. So when they are rating the efficiency of penetration items they are only rating the -other- stats on the item. So when you compare the penetration items you mostly have to look at the "Paying for:" collumn.

It's pretty interesting. What does it mean for Doran's Shield when it says -9.68 but then in the notes it says Efficiency 222.32 including HP5 stats?

I just played a custom AI game 3v1 trying to rush Cho to the Rod of Ages. It takes awhile to get enough money to buy one, but right at the end I got a 2nd and I was doing some pretty sick damage.

I noticed I do better with last hitting when I have those abilities that are more of an AOE. Like Cho with his Vorpal Spikes and Sivir with her Ricochet.

EDIT: Another question regarding Garen. Depending on if you want to tank or DPS, wouldn't that change whether you buy the blade or shield? Even though the blade is more efficient, doesn't the shield give you more applicable stats towards what you want to achieve?

It means that he normally doesn't include regen stats, but -if- he were to the item goes from inefficient to almost as good as the other doran's items.

Random tip for Cho: level his knockup only once, then rush the aoe silence. Reason for this is that the knockup only gains damage per level, while the silence gains damage and duration.

Re: Garen. Yes.
So basically all of the Doran's items are pretty good.

And for Cho I was trying to follow a build, but I realized that the AOE silence did pretty good damage against the minions. But good tip, thanks!

I spent part of the day reading over what all of the stats me and looking at some of the more common items that people buy. I still need more experience though. I wish the games wouldn't take so long to play. 30-50min games take so much time.

Dang, first game on my own.

I picked Garen. I went 10-0-6.

My build was Doran's Blade, Boots of Swiftness, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Chain Vest, and Long Sword. I was working on getting the Sunfire Cape.

One guy on the other team just kept walking up to me and then I would kill him. He said he was just going to let me kill him because his team sucked. They ended up surrendering when we were at the inner turrets.

I kind of like playing people at my level! It's so much easier. haha

This probably has been said already but check out "TreeEskimo" on own3d.tv for great commentary on his game play. All of his stuff is pretty old but the basic concepts are still good. Best streamer imo to learn the game.

How much of a hindrance is lag going to be to becoming competent at this game?

I'm in asia so i usually get around 250ms of lag. So far I've only played comp stomps so it hasn't been a big deal but I'm afraid of going into the solo queue because I know I'm always going to use lag as an excuse for why I lose, instead of just blaming myself and trying to be better.

Wolfram, 250ping is actually fairly common in this game, because of players from Asia, Australia, etc. If you play during your own primetime hours you'll see pings upward of 300-400 fairly often. I'm not sure how big of an advantage NA's with <100 ping have, though. I'm sure it helps with the skillshots and last hitting.

You'll lag even more in teamfights with a lot of particle effects.

Its going to hurt your lasthitting a lot too, which is crucial.

Just try it and see, 1 game wont kill you.

just wait until you have that guy on your team. you should always report players like that at the end of the game!

I probably will. Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know you could do that.

I only killed him about 4 times. The rest of my kills were all legitimate, but the other team was very soft. When I played in a group with Lvl 30 players I felt like Garen wasn't doing much damage. And then on my own at Lvl 6 I was doing massive damage.

2nd game on my own someone took Garen so I went ChoGath.

9-3-6, Doran's Ring, Boots of Swiftness, Rod of Ages x2, Mercury's Treads.

At the end I was looking for something with magic resistance and the Mercury's Treads seemed like a good fit since I kept getting stunned/slowed/whatever they were doing to me. Good choice?

Also, is it my understanding that eventhough I had 2 boots that I'd have the movement speed of the Boots of Swiftness, and just the +25magic resistance and +35Tenacity (not stacking the movement speed on the Treads?)

Most likely.

I'd recommend getting Merc Treads as a beginner unless their team has absolutely no CC.

Not dying is so crucial in the noob games.

I'm not familiar with the abilities of the other champions other than Garen and Cho'Gath. I pretty much have 4 games played and have gone Garen 3 times and Cho'Gath 1.

I have played against the bots with all of the free champions except for Annie and Cassi, but without playing in a real game where I'm forced to learn builds and figure out which items to buy, it doesn't really sink in.

So just by looking at who is on the other team I don't know how to translate that into useful knowledge - how to structure my build to counter theirs.

I enjoy the noob games though. No pressure and everyone is at my level. In some ways I feel like I'm slightly better than them, maybe it's just because I'm not going in blindly. It's nice, though, that nobody is jumping down your throat when you don't play perfectly.

Ya, obviously once you are aware of which champions have heinous stuns/other CC you will be able to tailor your build accordingly.

I believe Merc Treads are good for any game, whereas the other boots are more specialized. Unless something has changed since I've played last.

Wow, I just wrecked with ChoGath.

20-0-7. Doran's Ring, Rod of Ages, Mercury's Treads, Frozen Heart, Blasting Wand, and Ruby Crystal. I think I had 7 or 8 stacks on my Feast.

145 minions killed and 3 turrets destroyed along with killing the Nexus at the end.

As soon as the game was over 2 guys, 1 on my team and 1 on the other team, added me to their friend's list. hahaha

People will do this if you get ridiculous numbers. Had this happen a couple of times, (once after a 20-0-12 Sona game) the problem was most of the guys that do this are really really bad and usually don't accept for this reason.
