Thoughts on starting d ring on gp over flask against champs I wouldn't start elixir/dshield/cloth? I've been finding myself with mana problems even with flask, d ring you will never run out of mana thanks to mana on kill, you get health to survive early in lane, and even ap for w. Only problem is no ward but depending on what side you are could maybe work?

Think the ward decision comes first. e.g. You have a top/jungle matchup in which you can get away without the ward at start, then you decide if you can sacrifice the healing component to Flask for the studly stats of Doran's Ring. I'm sure there are such matchups.

Well with d ring cost reduction you still get 2 pots, compared to 1 pot + 3 flask charges if you start with flask + ward. So not TOO much less sustain, but def noticable. Like you said, deciding factor is probably the ward. I was blue side so I stated d ring vs a shen which would probably be one of the better matchups to start d ring with in theory since its basically a farm lane. The mana regen was def noticable, but i think d shield would have been better because with his constant q harass I had to use W to sustain, which wasted a lot of the mana i was "saving" by having d ring. D shield probably would have let me shrug off the harass without needing to use W.

edit: The one other benefit from d ring is that the enemy laner/enemy team probably think you are A) AP GP or B) completely ******ed C) Both.

guessing dring is a bit better if you're planning on using w all the time

Yeah max W. Only problem is that relying on w spam to heal instead of consumables (if flask or cloth start) or passive hp/5 (d shield start) leaves you vulnerable to ganks.
