Ok, I'm old - nothing from the last 2 decades. Cue old fart rant about music of today, not even albums now cos it's all digital, in my day we had vinyl, etc.

Wonder What's Next was a fantastic album from start to finish, and actually benefited from being heard in its entirety. The last song still gives me chills...so good.

I didn't really care for much of their other stuff except a few individual tracks. 'I Get It' and 'Saturdays' were solid off the Vena Sera album. I really like 'Point #1' from the original album, and I REALLY like 'Bend the Bracket' off the 3rd album that I can't think of the name right now.

But yeah, I went back to earlier in the thread and was shocked that I didn't include Wonder What's Next in my original listing.

Really? I can understand Ziggy but I'm hard pressed to think of an album before Lets Dance that wasn't better and I'm including Pin Ups and the live ones

I think everyone's favorite albums are influenced by what's going on in your life at the time, which is why we all tend to choose albums from our youth or early twenties, when music is an important part of our lives. That's the main reason for Let's dance being there for me. I saw Bowie at Milton Keynes bowl when he did the Serious Moonlight tour - best live gig I've ever attended. Purely on its merits, it's probably not as good as some others: I think Low and Young Americans were much more influential, and Heroes is my favorite single of all time.

What do you think of the other selections?

Lol small world I went to that concert too. The Saturday if I remember correctly. Am I right in remembering REM were one of the support bands?

I know what you mean about music meaning the most during your youth and I was 18 at the time but I had an older cousin by several years who was a huge bowie fan. I bought Scary Monsters when it came out and raved about it and he lent me all of Bowies previous stuff (he had them all) so by the time Lets Dance came out I was well versed in his back catalog. I do remember thinking at the time that Heroes (not the single off course), Lodger and Low as albums were a bit meh on first listen but they grew on me. My list is a few replies up and I only have Hunky Dory from Bowie in there but Station to Station & Aladdin Sane could easily make it too.

Like your list. I'd forgotten about Remain in Light, that too is in mine. Obviously your a big Fall fan but I was never really into them that much. A couple of my best mates were big fans so I've heard most of there stuff but I've never bought one of their albums. I was like that with the Birthday Party tho at the time but bought their hits (lol) compilation a few years back and now Mutiny is one of my fav commute tracks so maybe I should look back into them. Any suggestions on which ones?

Ha, funny about milton keynes gig. yeah, I went on the saturday. Beautiful sunny day. Can't remember the support acts, though I think Terence Trent D'arby was one, and maybe Annie Lennox, though my memory may be faulty as I've seen Bowie three times.

The Fall are a strange group: you either love them or wonder why anyone else does. I got into them only because John Peel used to rave about them - all of their singles made the Festive Fifty, but none has ever made a dent in the charts. I think their most accessible album is probably Wonderful and Frightening World, but any of the Brix albums is a good start as they have songs with melodies. There is a really good compilation "50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong", which contains a good selection of the "hits" from their extensive and still-growing back catalogue.

I saw your list - I have most of those albums. Never Mind The Bollocks is a seminal album. I think "Anarchy in the UK" has to be one of the all-time great singles as it was the archetypal punk song.

Without this thread, I may have never come to appreciate the musical perfection that is Steely Dan.
