Hey, I'm Matthew and I'm a 20 year old singer songwriter from Argentina. I've played the guitar since I can remember, and started taking music more seriously these last 2 years after moving to Buenos Aires for University (currently studying Business) and finding a really good vocal coach.

I found at about two plus two 3 or 4 years ago when I started playing online poker, I even made a Poker Goals and Challenges thread where I kept track of my progress as I moved up and down the stakes.

My youtube channel started the 4th of September of 2016 and I currently have 219 subscribers. It's definitely been a slower progress from what I expected, every new like I get out of the blue in any video is huge news. I'm starting this post to keep track of my goals that I will be setting up as time passes by and I am also willing to answer any question you guys ask.

My last cover was a pretty popular song called All we Know by The Chainsmokers

My next cover will be a song called When you Love Someone by James TW which I am currently enjoying a lot!

I really hope you enjoy my covers and maybe in the future if you are interested I'll be uploading some songs I wrote. Any comment on this post is truly appreciate it.

Let the journey begin!

Second Update: Before I start with this update I wanted to thank everyone who took the time to read my thread.

To get you guys more into how's my youtube channel like, here's a screenshot of my traffic sources, this means where my views are coming from.

As you can see External is the main traffic source of my views, if you click external it shows you where your views are coming from.

I get the most views by sharing my youtube video on facebook, and another good chunk for sharing them on reddit. I am really careful with where I share my videos, I don't want to spam my video around and get a lot of negativity because of it, I think that's really not a good idea to advertise your channel at all.

I am actually surprised with how many views I get from suggested videos, almost the same amount of views I get from my subscribers.

Yesterday I uploaded When You Love Someone by James TW and it did not go very well on facebook, hopefully as time passes the video's result end up a little bit better.

Here's my latest cover

I'll be finishing every update with my subscribers count and a nice random picture I find on the internet, thanks for reading!

Update 3: I uploaded my cover of Shape of You by Ed Sheeran today. I'm a really big fan of Ed Sheeran, I've heard Shape of you and Castle on the Hill as soon as they came out. My original plan was to upload a cover as soon as I could to attract new possible listeners.

I was a little demotivated when after 2 days youtube was full of Ed Sheeran covers by huge youtubers, so I decided I was not going to cover the song. Fast forward three weeks, I was going to a party with a couple of friends, and he asked the driver to play shape of you, I was pretty shocked because he doesn't like Ed Sheeran at all. We then get to the party and Shape of You was playing, and everyone was dancing to the song and knowing the words, that's when I changed my mind and decided to give it a go.

Song Details
To the people who know some music theory, the key of Shape of You is C#m, but I played it in Dm because I felt like it suited my voice a little bit better.

The chords I play in the video are: Dm - Gm - A# - C

Shape of You - Ed Sheeran (Cover)

My next cover will be Sugar by Maroon 5, I'm pretty excited about this one because I changed the song completely, it's the first time I'm uploading something like this, I hope people react well to it. Let's see what happens! Thanks for reading this, I hope you have a great day!

Good stuff FuzzingIrish!

Do you play any gigs or anything there in Argentina? I wonder what the music scene is like there? Can musicians make any kind of money playing gigs there?

Things are not that great here in the states. There's a lot of places across the country with ****ty music scenes, and a lot of bands fall into the pay for play bull****, where they have to purchase a certain amount of tickets in order to play a gig somewhere, and then they have to try to sell them. What ends up happening is they might sell a few to some friends, but the rest are just wasted, and they pay money to play the gig, rather than getting paid for their service as musicians.

Hey! Thank you very much for checking the thread. To be honest I've never gigged in my entire life so there is nothing I can confirm to you, but I've heard the same things about the live scene. Right now I'm trying to grow my youtube subscriber base and eventually one day I'll get some gigs because of that, I definitely don't want to do the pay and play or selling tickets to all my friends, so right now just uploading covers and hoping for the best! Thanks again!

Update 4:Ok so, today I covered the song Sugar by Maroon 5. For this cover I made my own version of the song, I was really inspired by this guy called "Jamie Cullum" he is an amazing musician that has this series where he learns and covers a popular song in 1 hour, the songs end up sounding completely different and he just kills it, you can search his name on youtube you won't be disappointed I promise.

I am really intrigued if people will like this more than my regular covers, we'll see what happens. Shape of You did really well, I'm pretty happy about that and my subscribers count increased a lot too.

Song Details
So the chords I used in my version of the song are:

If you want to play with Capo on the 2nd fret: F Am7 Dm C

With no capo: G Bm7 Em D

Maroon 5 - Sugar (Cover)

I'll be playing Issues by Julia Michaels for my next video. I really liked the song hopefully I do a good job with that one. By the way, I want to know what do you guys think about the cover, do you prefer a cover that sounds different from the original song or do you prefer a cover that has a similar approach to the original? Let me know! Thank you very much for reading! Best of luck!

I think I tend to like unique approaches to cover songs. Look at what Jimi Hendrix did with All Along the Watchtower, by Bob Dylan. If he had tried to just mimic Dylan, I don't think it would have had nearly as much impact as it has.

Hey sorry for taking so long to reply! I agree with you, but what I mean by "...a cover that has a similar approach to the original." is not mimicking the original version but taking a similar approach in terms of melody / tempo for example Jeff Buckley's Cover of Hallelujah is a good example of that, if you see Leonard Cohen's Original version you can easily see the similarities between both perfomances, the really big thing that makes the difference it's the artist tone.

I still haven't uploaded my new cover because I got sick and I'm still recovering hopefully I'll feel better soon! Thanks to everyone who is reading and watching my videos!

Update 5: I finally got a little bit better and was able to record my cover of Issues by Julia Michaels. I found this song in the youtube trending site and really felt like recording it, it's a really good song.

I got some bad news this week as well, I am going to Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston and I applied for a scholarship, because the whole thing is pretty expensive, sadly I did not receive the scholarship. My parents said they would pay for it either way, they are really supportive, something I'm really grateful about.

Song Details:
The song is in the key of A flat (Ab) and the chord changes are really interesting because you are barely playing the tonic chord through the entire song.

For the verse I'm playing: Db Eb Cm Db
And for the pre chorus and chorus I'm playing: Db Eb Ab Fm

Julia Michaels - Issues (Cover)

I have no idea what my next cover will be, pretty sure I might record I'm Not The Only One by Sam Smith we will see. I really hope you enjoy my new cover and thank you very much for reading my thread, feel free to ask anything you want! Best of luck!

Nice job, good song!

Sorry to hear you didn't get the scholarship, that's a bummer. If you have another chance to audition you should definitely do it, don't let this minor setback get you down!

I just auditioned for a scholarship in the jazz program at my school and I totally bombed on the sight reading, but did well on the two jazz standards I did (Little Sunflower - Freddie Hubbard, Tune Up - Miles Davis), and I'm not sure when I'll find out if I get the scholarship or not, but either way I'm just happy to be in school studying music.

Update 5: I really wanted to record Can't Help Falling in Love but I didn't like how the bridge sounded so I decided to create this mashup in a way where I can avoid playing the bridge. I immediately though of Kiss Me by Ed Sheeran for a mashup because the lyrics have a very similar meaning and it made sense to put these 2 songs together. Let me know what you think about the cover and mashups like this in general.

Song Details:To be able to play these 2 songs together I had to change the key of Can't Help Falling in Love and raise it one step, the original version is in C and I play it in D.

The chords I play for Can't help Falling in Love are
  • D F#m Bm G D A G A Bm Em D A D
The chords I play for Kiss Me are
  • (Verse & Chorus) D A(1 strum) Bm A(1 strum) G D
  • (Prechorus) G A D Bm G A

My last cover (Issues by Julia Michaels) did really good, I'm happy about that. I'm pretty sure I am covering Oasis Don't Look Back in Anger for my next video, thanks for reading and as always feel free to ask me anything, best of luck!

Update 6: Today I recorded kind of my own version of Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis. It's a song I played from time to time and definitely my favorite Oasis song. I didn't upload last week because my mother came to the flat, where me and my brother live, for my birthday and had a freaking million family gatherings and stuff haha.

Song Details:I'm playing this song with capo on the 6th fret.

The chords
  • (Verses and Chorus): C G Am E7 F G C Am G
  • (Prechorus): F Fm C F Fm C F Fm C G E7 Am G F G

Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger

My last cover did better than the last one and little by little my subscriber count is growing, I'm super happy with everything right now, thanks for reading and really appreciate the comments. Update 7: Today I recorded City of Stars the song from the movie La La Land. I really liked the movie, and specially this song, I believe it has something really special. I hope you like my cover of the song!

Song Details: I play this song with capo in the 4th fret, I'm going to link the chords down below, I feel it will be easier for anyone who is looking to play the song.

Don't Look Back in Anger did pretty good as well. I'm really happy with how the channel is growing, hopefully it will keep on growing. I'm currently doing all the VISA paperworks, can't wait to go to Berklee and write about it. Thanks to everyone who is taking their time to read my thread.
