I'm playing hu vs a friend and we seem to have different approaches to small pairs on the first 5 cards. Let's say they are 3 3 J T A rainbow. He would always set this A / 3 3 / J T to mantain small pairs middle / big pairs back... my approach is A / T / 3 3 J, don't know how to study this but my intuition says having the 2 extra outs for trips/ fh must be worth something? Is this correct? Is there a case where playing 3 3 middle is correct except when 3's are not live? Also, does one of the sets maximize chances for FL?

With A / T / 33J, you need a lot to happen for FL. Another A, 2-pair+ in middle, and improve bottom. Hard to make the middle work without putting too much stress on the bottom (say... TTT). Minimum # of cards for FL is 5 (ATT3J, or ATTJJ, or AT-99/88/77/66/55/44/22- 3/J).
My way, still need to improve bottom, 1-card (A) to improve middle, and KK or QQ up top. Also with bottom improved, can hit a T in the middle and score points with 66-99 up top. Minimum # cards for FL is 4 (3AKK or JAQQ does it).
Look for the path to FL that requires the fewest cards.
