8 game is becoming reasonably popular on Pokerstars all the way from the micro limits to the high stakes.

I wanted to make this thread to discuss the games/strategy and hopefully we'll get a nice community as the popularity of 8 game increases.

Anyone made the jump from 4/8 to 10/20? It seems that the gap in stakes is just huge. Is the level of play that significant also?

8 game is on Pokerstars. The game is 6 handed and it rotates from Triple Draw 2-7, Limit Holdem, Limit O8, Razz, Stud, Stud 8, No Limit Holdem, and Pot Limit Omaha.

I played this at .20/.40 and .50/1 for several weeks. I found myself getting really excited when the 2-7 TD round came around as this seemed to be one of two weak points in most of my opponents games. I've switched to strictly 2-7 TD since I love the action of the game.

At these limits, PLO is the other weak game for most players. It is usually a lot of limping before and after the flop and checking the turn with anything less than a high straight.

Most of my 8-Game experience is in SNGs and MTTs. RichC is right in that most players are weakest at triple draw and PLO; many butcher Stud/8 as well. In tourneys, it's a fixed amount of time, not hands, per level, and it can be annoying when slow players keep you from getting many hands in your best games. Occasionally I've seen people stall in situations where I'm almost positive they are trying to get out of a weak game.

In the tourneys, I've found a lot of people who are used to big-bet games get frustrated in the limit games and turn into maniacs in NLHE/PLO because they have to "get back" the chips they pissed away playing HORSE badly. Also, never fold any reasonable triple draw hand on the 1st hand of a tournament against an unknown. You won't believe how many flushes and full houses people will "make" when they don't realized it's lowball.

I have played a lot of 4/8 and some 10/20. The jump is big both in stakes and in skill level. At 10/20 you're gonna have very tough opponents particularly in PLO, NLH

everyone in 20/40 and 40/80 is terrible, 40 is the biggest ive played. many of the same ppl play 100/200 also. there are a few horrible players in the 400/800. i find it hard to believe that anyone is at anything higher than a subhuman level of intelligence at 10/20 and lower

I have played 4/8 exclusively and the game can be very good at times and not good at other stages. It seems most players are weak somewhere and that is the beauty of it.

Anyone think we can petition to get Stars to put in some level between 4/8 and 10/20?

LOL. Not saying 10/20 isn't beatable. We're comparing 4/8 and 10/20 levels and there is a difference between these two. Sure, most people still suck, particularly at stud games and 2-7 in 10/20 (and possibly higher) and there are some huge donks around so it's definitely a game worth playing.

I think it's more likely that they don't know what it is and take a pass.

Played 8 game for the first time in a freeroll (lol freerolls), and aside from the whole fact that it was a freeroll and play was atrocious (for the most part in my favor until of course you AA gets owned by QK in NLHE, but that's for another day), I enjoyed playing it. Maybe in the future I might play a little micro limit game and see how I do.

I have no idea how people would be able to Multi table 8 game though, I was only 1 tabling and sometimes I would fold good Stud H/L hands because I forgot it's H/L and stuff like that. I didn't draw for a full house or flush during TD though .

for those who play 8-game reguarly do you measure bankroll on big bets or buy ins? And do you multitable and how many?

it doesnt really matter on what u measure your bankroll. if u need 20 buyins or 500bbs wont change anything.

im mostly playing 1-3 tables and if good nl tables are running i mix them in too

If you can't beat 4/8 I highly doubt you'll beat 20/40....

A good poker friend who plays 10/20-20/40 8game recommended I try and learn 8game and though I've been a marginal winner at best so far at 4/8, I've found it's been a lot of fun learning a new game. Brought back some of my old passion for poker that I think may have slipped. I mean I used to LOVE to play poker and looked forward to it very much.

Random, but that's my 8game story, anyone else feel the same?

i played around with 4/8 a bit but im just too bad at some games.

so i rather play the individual games first and keep my main action to nlhe (as usual) until im fit enough in all games to not be significantly minus ev in any game.

ideal would be to be at least a marginal winner in every game, having a significant edge in 2 or 3 and off course raping in nlhe since the avg table seems to be horrible at it.
probably just as horrible as i am in say stud

if i manage this then i think id play more and most likely 10/20 and if games are good 20/40 as well but that might take me a while.

i can totally agree on 8game bringing back the joy in poker.

Haha ya I've played a bit of 4/8 with you ExaMeter. You seemed decent, though I felt I had a reasonable edge over you. Cant remember specifics of games though. Think you owned me in a big razz pot once with like the second nuts when I had third nuts.

Just because you people read a chapter in SSII on TD doesn't mean you're good. You're good when you know how to break all the rules and win. You people would get eaten alive at high stakes.
