No one's trying to pull a ruse, and in context. I understand these are folks just making up games because they like to do so. They happen to also be hospitable to newcomers who want to join them so overall it's a fun time. And I like some of the "out there" games. Drawmaha 49 is growing on me!
However if I were trying to put together a visitor-friendly mixed games and loved all the 18 games in the mix, I'd probably try to rotate some of the more "out there" ones rather than play them all at the same time. Maybe 3 drawmahas out of 15 instead of 6 of 18.
I'd pick one "high badugi" game (hopefully hi-dugi) and put the other in mothballs.
Learning new games is really fun, but 4 hours out of a 5 hour rotation working with maybe a dozen funky hand rankings is a bit too much cognitive load to be tourist-friendly.
Actually I don’t think the truth is somewhere in middle. The takes on these games in this thread and others have been outlandish. First it was said they were rude and didn’t explain games. Then it was called a scam. 3for3poker and fossilman helped spell out the truth, and it was nothing like it was presented.
And “watering” it down to help make it more inclusive sounds good in theory but just doesn’t work.
People love Dramaha, so on a random Tuesday they are supposed to take half of them out to try and entice Billy Bob from West Virginia to take a seat? They don’t even know if a Billy Bob might be showing up. Most people don’t need to be in a Dramaha study group before sitting down and playing though.
But they get a decent amount of tourists regardless of Billy Bob. Game runs all of the time with a list. People can just simply choose whether or not to play
