Mixed draw home game Mixed draw home game

Hi there,

I plan to organize a mixed (dealer choice type) draw home game (tournament format).

The limits would be pot-limit and blinds will be used (no ante). Initially I planned to cover the following single draw games:
- Draw High with Joker
- Draw High without Joker
- A-5 (Cslifornia) Lowball with Joker
- 2-7 Lowball

I am a little bit relunctant to add the Triple equivalent because I think pot-limit might not be appropriate for Triple Draw.

What do you think ?

Kid.

Pot limit T/D is played thou very rarely. I had it in my mixed game tourney once and the pots were insane. It’s part of the big bet rotation at the WSOP.

It all depends what you guys want but PL 2-7 plays very big certainly. What you want to do is only limited by your imagination. Can play it limit but pot limit on river only. Or can just play it Limit.

Only you guys really know what you want. Sounds like it’s a home game with some lowball purists?

Hi,

In fact, my group plays mainly NL Hold'em. We run a home league (tournament-based). Some of them seldom play PL Omaha.

My goal is to add some "exotic" event and play some old school Poker. And I will propose to play it PL since they are all used to NL or PL.

Myself, I love lowball and draw Poker. Mainly play online but without the Joker and only 2-7.

Also to not make it too complex, I shall maybe keep 4 games only right now and see how it goes. Later maybe, I can add other Triple Draw games.

A little bit off topic, are those games still play in some card rooms in Cali ? For my next trip over there (in the LA area), I'd love to practice those games (even in limit).

2-7 triple draw does play well pot limit but it's going to dominate as a 4 street game in a mix of 1 street games. You could play it with a cap and/or reduce the blinds by a factor. Or just not care if it's a casual home game.

No judging here but that mix looks a lil boring, all those games play kind of small with just two streets of betting

To my knowledge no card room spreads any of them

Why not try sviten special:

It's almost the same as drawmaha but the one card open rule is a game changer.

30/60 limit california lowball was spread daily on weekdays at Commerce for many years. Not sure if the game is still around. It has some weird rules that I don't know if I recall correctly anymore. Not sure if they were standard california lowball rules or specific to that game. I think you weren't allowed to checkraise a 7 or better on the river and you are allowed to kill the pot from any position after you have been dealt your first 2 (?) cards.

NL 2-7 single draw is extremely common in mixed games and is played on its own by a small handful of people at fairly high stakes. NL or PL 5 card draw high is very rare in mixed games but seen occasionally.

Draw high with a joker is not played anywhere that I'm aware of. I played it heads up limit a couple times, it was not fun at all as limit poker.

For your tournaments, I strongly suggest playing with a sizable ante. These games all need an ante to generate any meaningful action. I also recommend playing the games NL over PL, though some people prefer PL for draw high. Half a small blind ante per player is fairly standard.

PL 2-7 triple draw is an action game and plays huge. 5/10 PL 2-7 triple draw could easily play as big as 20/40 NL holdem and 50/100 NL 2-7 single draw. It's a great game but very different than the single draw games. That game was sometimes played as NL back on FTP as I recall but imo plays much better as PL. It has had its moments where it was popular in mixed games.

I gave it a shot. It was a mixed game (tournament) with the following variants :
- Draw with Joker
- Cali Lowball
- Draw without Joker
- 2-7 Single Draw
To try all games, I did not go with dealer choice but game change at every orbit.

I tried it once as pot-limit and once as no-limit.
Everyone at the table (incl. me) preferred no-limit.

My group liked those variants. We surely won’t play this all the time but once in a while, it’s nice to break the NLHE routine.

I'll give my input from a traditional draw/current game availability standpoint.

NL 5CD (current on pokerstars)
NL A-5 Cali Draw Joker (classic California game)
NL 2-7 Single Draw (KC lowball, classic WSOP game)
PL Double Draw High (played in Aria big bet mix)
PL 2-7 Triple Draw half blinds
Limit Badugi (triple draw, 4 betting rounds)
Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

The reasoning here is to keep the games playing somewhat close in size. A NL 2 street game = a PL 3 street game = a Limit 4 street game = a half-blind PL 4 street game. Sure it's not perfect, but in mixes including say NL Holdem and Limit Holdem, the blinds are traditionally halved in the NL rounds.

I think if you make plaques for all the games, and maybe have a button that says Joker/No Joker on either side, this could create all the variety you might want. The single draw games typically have a 2x bb bring in. PL single draw kind of sucks, but would be minimally improved by the same bring in.
