Have I Learned 2-7 Totally Wrong?

So I was watching this video that seems to be produced by someone with at least a loose affiliation to PokerStars, where they were talking about deuce, and they made a couple plays that seemed like errors. This made me wonder if in fact *I've* been playing these spots wildly wrong. Example following

Video for ref: https://youtu.be/brP8rMGjn1o?t=14m59s

Spot is at 15:00

(background for those who don't want to watch the first 15: this is some kind of ps home game tournament. The sb and the bb have been very tight)

Hero delt Jh Jc 7h 5s 3h on the button with no action in front and... folds.

Now to me, this seems like an easy open. Sure, you'd rather have a deuce as well in there, but this seems like a very standard open/draw two. the commentator says he'd rather not do this as a steal and draw two 'with two players to get through' (when are there not?), but that seems incorrect. This seems much closer to a easy value open. am I wrong?

In general it seems like a lot of the deuce spots here are off, but that one particularly stands out. I'd be interested in any other thoughts on where this video is correct or has insights that others found helpful, or not.

Re: Have I Learned 2-7 Totally Wrong?

i wouldn't take any advice from this guy, whoever he is. if he's not opening this, he's playing way too tight. and judging from the one o8 hand i skipped to, he folded 3 wheel cards in the co when folded to him, so yeah....
maybe this is some tourney strategy that i'm clueless about? (i don't play tournaments) either way, don't learn games by watching tourney players.
death donkey has some great vids on deuces cracked. watch those.

Re: Have I Learned 2-7 Totally Wrong?

then i watched just one lhe hand, he opened a3 otb, bb calls and donks on q22, and he just snap folds....
then watched one more o8 hand. he's in bb 20 bets behind with 4437, sb raises with less than 1 bet behind, and he hovers over the fold btn, and finally just calls? wtf.
also, the td hand before your post, he opens tt77k in sb vs bb. seriously, this guy butchered 5/5 hands i watched. not even a random fish can pull that off.

HAHAHA I also really laughed at that o8 flat call.

I guess this is proof that literally anyone can make a video and become a 'coach' but you know, sometimes folks have original ideas, and I try and question whatever orthodoxy I myself believe in, just to sharpen the sword so to speak.

thanks for the DD/DeucesCracked tip

Re: Have I Learned 2-7 Totally Wrong?

I didn't feel like watching more than five minutes but the guy is playing a tournament with a somewhat short stack. And I'm not sure where there are with the payouts.

So it is a completely different animal than a cash game.

I did happen to catch the 753 td hand he folded on button. He had 3,000 chips and blinds were 200/400. I certainly would have played that though but still important to realize it is a tournament and possibly it was due to those considerations that he folded. And based upon what he was saying I think he folded because of his stack size. I don't think he was right to do so, but he may very well open in a cash game.

What was the O8 hand, why couldn't you just tell us what he folded instead of just saying three wheel cards? Telling us exactly what he had takes less typing. But if those three wheel cards were part of something like 345Tr and he had to raise 20-30% of this stack I like the fold. Also maybe it was the last hand of LO8 and Razz was coming up next where it is easier to chip up risk free. I've survived and chipped up in many of a mixed game tourneys by not taking the flop game variance and take my stack to the stud games. Also I wouldn't be too quick to judge the LHE hand given read and stack sizes due to tournament considerations.

Don't watch tournaments to learn new games unless you plan on specifically playing tournaments.

Again I watched 30 seconds so perhaps he was too tight even with tournament considerations and in that one 753 hand I think he was. But other plays may be justified.

I did, don’t really care though

Main gist is that watching a tourney video where a bunch of people are short stacked is not a good way at all to learn no matter how good or bad the guy is

If you think my main point was to defend the guy in the video absolutely it wasn’t. I even pointed out that I thought the fold with 753 was too tight regardless. However that open with 77ttk could easily be more correct in a tournament if the BB is not defending enough hands and people do play tighter in a tourney
