How unethical is this? How unethical is this?

Was playing crazy pineapple and ended up all in with K/K/5. The other player flips over his cards preflop and shows aces.

On the flop I hit a five and dump one of my kings.

Hmmm got some crap for this when I did it. I dumped the king so that I would have 5 outs (3 5s and 2 kings) instead of just the set outs. Obviously had I not seen his hand I would've kept the pocket kings. My home game said that I should have kept the kings even and played as if I hadn't seen his hand.

No, it isn't your fault that he turned over. Do what you need to do to win.

But FWIW if you're in a home game with your friends and AA was inexperienced and made a mistake, answer may be different. You don't want to get a rep for playing cutthroat in a friendly game or else you lose the fish. You want to be cutthroat without looking it.

As Mason Malmuth has pointed out the first rule of poker is protect your hand. Your opponent failed to do that. Literally, protect your hand. Don't let anyone see, don't let the wind blow it away, don't let your pet goat eat it. Protect your hand. You rightly took advantage.

It's Alizée Jacotey. She's a French singer, her artist name is "Alizee".

It's not unethical at all.

But considering that the other players in your game thought it was, it might have been unwise to have shown your hand and what you were doing.

It could not have been clear to you that anyone would somehow think your tactic unethical (since it's not unethical). At any rate, at this point there's nothing much you can do about the ethical issue.

I usually bend over backwards to give my opponents in a private game a break. I don't want to take advantage of them and I don't want it to appear I'm taking advantage of anyone in any game. (It makes for bad blood when someone thinks you took unfair advantage in a card game). Some of your opponents are likely to tend to resent you anyhow when you're the best player in the game. You have to figure out how to get around that. I do it by obviously giving up some of my edge, one way or another.

I'm leaving the thread here rather than moving it to the home games forum because you made a nice tactical play on the flop. But next time you do it, don't let anyone know what you're doing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll definitely bring a clip of Alizee for the next time I suck out or make a play which they think is unethical.

If you dump a King.... how are you getting 5 outs? You've already seen your mistake on the 5's, but dumping a king only give you another 1/2 out in a sense.... unless runner runner case cards happen a lot in your game.

what am i missing here? kings up beats aces, right? he has 4 outs and villain has a decent redraw against 2 of them. making kings up does not mean villain makes aces up

my bad- had trips on the brain. Ignore the idiotic comment about runner runner... but he didn't have 5 outs, at least.
