Close spot, depends a lot upon the opponent and what you know about them. If they are not known to me, either it's check-raise like you did, and check-call the river. Or, check-call the turn, doing so to freeze them onto a worse 87 or a smooth 9. Though freezing may not be totally accurate of a term when you are first to act. But the same idea, get them to choose to not break their worse 8s and 9s because you only check-called. But this line doesn't work if they have rough 9s or worse, and then you fail to get the extra bet from those hands on the turn. Against a well-known opponent, some of these options would be horrible, and it might even be something else is best.
HUHU against a 3-pat range this is a really clear x/r and bet the end. Note that you've also seen an extra 8 and 3 which even further increases your equity by weakening your opponent's range.
