Since my first guess about this proved to be wrong I'll take another shot. It's possible that when they scheduled this, they figured the SB would be on the 31st and that's why they scheduled it for this week. By the time they realized it was a week later it was too late to switch. Again just a guess but nothing else makes sense.

I thought that too at first, but when I floated that here I was told they booked the event well in advance of the NBA schedule being released

Guess I don't know the respective dates of schedule release and Rumble date booking, but my above guess would still be my guess. Obviously teams have to know stuff well before the general public does. It's not like teams see the publicly-released league schedule and then frantically check to make sure they're actually able to fulfill their assigned home dates.

Right, but I still don't understand why they didn't make hosting the RR conditional on having the arena available on the 31st.

"Is Amway Center open on January 31?"

"No, there's an NBA game that night."

"Okay, we'll find another city to host the rumble then"

I also agree, but it appears that the NBA schedule didn't come out until the middle of August. I'm going to assume they had the event booked well in advance of that.

I also found a blog written April 13th that had the announcement of date and place of the Rumble, and the NFL schedule came out on April 23rd, so who knows.
