I just put on Starrcade 91. I watched it a few times as a kid because I had a recording on VHS but haven't seen over 25 years.

Wild format. Two rings are set up, touching each other. 40 guys in a lottery. 20 tag teams are made. 10 tag matches. The winners will then enter a battle royal, in which the 2nd ring comes into play. One guy wins the battle royal.

I'm intending to go to sleep but I actually want to watch this. Big PN News fan.

2nd match, we have Stunning Steve Austin with his flowing blond locks, with Rick Rude (managed by Paul Heyman!) Vs Van Hammer and Big Josh.

Great stuff!

It took many years before I was alerted to the fact that Honky Tonk Man's valet Peggy Sue was Sensational Sherri. That realization blew me away. It's downright admirable watching her throw herself into that role.

I had a chance to go to Starrcade 1991 and I'll forever regret it but I was a dumb 11 year old. My mom said "you can have the newest WWF video game or we can go see Starrcade". I just regret having never gone to the Norfolk Scope when I was on the east coast. An amazing venue for wrestling.

Wow. Yeah, that's too bad. I was really taken by the arena. Unique. Very bright.

Its ****ing insane that new Genesis games cost more 1991 dollars than new games cost in 2022 dollars. I seem to recall the first WWF Genesis game being 70 ****ing dollars.

Well I didn't know this until now. Interesting.

I was shocked to discover that both Scary Sherri and Johny B Badd/Marc Mero are caucasian.

Speaking of old games: a disc on my PS4 stopped working and instead of buying a new game or replacing, I ordered a N64, two remotes, and No Mercy along with Wave Racer 64. Have everything but the N64 which is getting here tomorrow . All of that cost $360

Two things:

You might want to get a Retrotink or similar device to play on modern TVs (unless you have a CRT you're planning on using).

Second, watch out for your No Mercy cart. If you bought it at a reasonable price, it's probably the one that randomly eats your gamesaves. It's not a dealbreaker, and plenty of people have played those carts without issue. Just something to be aware of.

Edit: If you wanna dive deeper, get yourself an Everdrive and you can have the entire N64 library on one cart. I've been using one for the past year and having a blast. It's actually the entire reason I got back into wrestling. AKI wrestling games (World Tour, Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy) are off the chain. Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 was only released in Japan and is like an ultimate version of Wrestlemania/No Mercy.

Hey jish, appreciate the post. This is the game/system I got. Care to tell me what you think if you can decipher any info out of it?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004WLMA...roduct_details

I did also get a N64 to HDMI converter for the video input/output.

I'd be interested in the Everdrive eventually especially for those games you mentioned plus classics like Golden Eye, Orcana of Time and Perfect Dark.

I've been rotating my watching among 1982, 1988, 1994, and 2000. It's a pretty good mix, all very distinct from each other with the six-year gaps in between. As I said upthread, I can't be bothered to suffer through the unwatchable 2000 WCW product, but I'm watching everything else that's available in those years.

1994 is the weakest link, which is particularly an indictment of that period since that stuff is from my childhood and should be getting a built-in nostalgia advantage. On the pro-1994 side, the obsession with sing-along was still years away, but is unfortunately part of the 2000 experience.

Console looks fine. For the game, you're not really going to be able to tell the version until you can read the back of the cart itself. Again, that's not a huge issue. When I realized mine was a "bad" one, I just got an Everdrive.

My only concern is the HDMI converter. The cheaper ones can have some real delay and loss issues. The N64, in particular, is a tricky beast when it comes to this. Even my Retrotink 2x (which is ~$130), isn't peak performance. Serious enthusiasts mod the console itself to have perfect replication. If you find yourself having issues, check them out https://www.retrotink.com/

As for the Everdrive, I can't recommend it enough. For $100 you can have it all (and more). It obviously takes some tooling to set up, but it's only a day of work. There's actually an active modding scene for N64 as well, so you can play some wild hacks like 2player mario and Goldeneye with mario characters. Additionally, Everdrive has gameshark support built-in. So you can cheat to your heart's content on all those hard-to-impossible levels from childhood. You can freaking fly in Ocarina of Time.

Edit: The X5 is the one you want, but it looks like it's currently out of stock https://krikzz.com/our-products/cartridges/ed64x5.html
X7 is really overkill, so I'd just wait until stock replenishes for the X5. Krikzz is just one guy in the Ukraine, so things can move slowly. It took me over a month to receive my X3. The forum is pretty active, so check there for stock updates. Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

Thanks a lot. I'll definitely grab the Retrotink or Everdrive if I run into serious issues or when I want to grab some new games .

It was pretty funny when Austin did it. The thing where it made the crowd the most obnoxious it's ever been for years and years (yes, probably even worse than 2022) was a really unfortunate side effect.

Starrcade 92. They have Hank Aaron present Sting with a championship ring commemorating his win the prior year. Sting takes the mic and says something to Hank Aaron about "715 for you....". Ugh. Does he think he retired immediately following passing Ruth?

I never knew of Ole Anderson to be a full babyface, but here he is in 1988. It actually works quite well, surprisingly well since he's a noted ******* and his on-screen heel character always just seemed like an extension of his real personality.

When HHH/Steph became the on-screen authority in late 1999 and dubbed their reign "the McMahon-Helmsley Era," I knew we were headed for a very dark place, because it was immediately obvious that there was some mouthbreather out there going, "More like McMahon-Helmsley ERROR, am I right? HAR HAR HAR."

Sure enough, within a few weeks, there's the sign saying exactly that (minus the HAR HAR HAR, I guess) on the hard camera side. I could only close my eyes, shake my head, and sigh in despair.

Did Larry Zybyszko make that sign?

Haha. I can instantly imagine that in Larry voice. He could punch "error" the way he punched "New World ODOR."

I'm just glad that when he had the brilliant idea of building on that by insistently calling the fake Sting "Stink," his broadcast colleagues just no-sold it until it went away.
