I powered through the first three episodes today. Mostly great stuff.

Find myself being more impressed with the losers in most cases, especially Poirot, Ali, and Mendoza.

Agree with the thread consensus on being very "meh" on ZSJ. Also listening to Daniel Bryan blow his load on every reversal was irritating. Hopefully his next match is better.

This was also the first time I saw him wrestle and I came away with a couple impressions. His style and technique make me think that he is "wrestler's wrestler". Those who have a much more critical eye then most of us do, will think what he does is outstanding. I on the other hand will wait to see more before making a judgement.

I will say one thing that works against him for me is that he didn't look like he was in a fight. It looked like he was putting on theatrical performance as opposed to being in an actual fight. That to me is not entertaining

d/l'ed that episode. My first time seeing ZSJ and I thoroughly enjoyed him. I'm pretty cynical with new people and wasn't expecting to like him but he surprised me. He does need to put on some muscle so his striking looks like it actually hurts. That's a huge difference between him and Bryan.

I'm guessing the people who don't enjoy ZSJ mostly don't like NJPW either because it seemed like a style that's a good fit for NJPW.

Only my second time seeing ZSJ. First time was the Angle match which I think was a lot better. Hopefully he is better in the next round. I thought this match was the most boring so far of all the CWC matches. Seems like he is very very good at one aspect of wrestling but the rest he is just avg on.

I don't remember what nice it was but he got hit with something and he sold it by doin some weird cartoon face and staring at the camera. It looked so out of place.

Also agreed with everyone about adding muscle. Dude looked like a teenager in underwear out there

My problem is that the submissions a lot of people call innovative just look ridiculous and ineffective to me.

Agree with the above. I'm also not a fan of submissions where in reality all the guy in the bottom has to do is fall backwards and he is free.

Just looks weird to me

I like octopus holds if applied well, though that one above doesn't look like it believably does anything worthwhile to the guy's neck. Even with that one, as applied, it doesn't look particularly simple to fall back given where the weight of the applying wrestler is positioned.

I hate moves where it's too obvious that the wrestler taking the move is helping comply with the move, but something like that wouldn't really strike me that way.

#1 on this list for me is the C-4. Hate that move more than any other in wrestling.

D/l'ed some ZSJ from PWG to get more of an opinion. 2 minutes into the match (which has been nothing but a straight jacket hold reversed a few times) the crowd starts chanting "we love wrestling". Most obnoxious chant I've ever heard.

Watched him vs. Kyle O'Reilly. I'm not a huge fan of Kyle so perhaps I made myself not like ZSJ as much as I would've otherwise but I wasn't impressed. Kyle worked better than him for the most part as well. Going to watch one more match.

Johnny Mundo is the only wrestler in the world that does a believable c4

All the guy taking the move has to do to get out of it is drop his left shoulder to the mat and roll on his back/shoulders to his right shoulder.

The only way that move would "hurt" is if the guy applying it cranks up on the taker's arm but doing that will help the taker get out by doing the above.

after googling it the first hit is John Morrison throwing a terrible looking C-4, he has since changed how he does it by doing it to a running opponent so its like a "flipping overhead belly to belly" instead of "lets stand here and try to do a flip at the same time"

I'll add my #1 to this list. The Canadian Destroyer. Terrible.

Another good one is the Styles Clash

Historically I'm most frequently annoyed by dudes setting themselves up to get hit by the 619, but that's not quite the same thing as these.

Styles Clash looks terrible on an opponent bigger than AJ, which is basically everyone he will face in WWE. It isn't like Styles is some generic wrestler that needs to do that move; he's still the best in ring wrestler in the company without it.

Fun fact: In the "Best Wrestling Maneuver" category of the Wrestling Observer awards (that super-smarky poll that NJPW crushes every year), both the Styles Clash and the Canadian Destroyer have each won twice. No idea why; they're both terrible moves.

When the Styles Clash won that award in 2015, there was some good background the year before. When Yoshi-Tatsu faced Styles back in November of 2014, Tatsu took a very nasty Styles Clash that took him out of wrestling until April 2016. AJ also took out someone else with that move. A British wrestler, I believe. All of a sudden, it somehow became a feared move in NJPW and it always gets gasps when Styles tries to pull it off on someone, knowing that when he hits it, the match will be over and, to the NJPW crowd, the move will be devastating to the opponent.

LOL at that "I must go, my planet needs me" edit in the middle of the Dar/Shira match. Dar did not look remotely good in that match.
